The Web Services composition paradigm has been widely used in Information Technology (IT) and Internet environments to create Web applications that both flexible and rapidly deployable. Web Services are a key way to realize Service-Oriented architectures (SOA). In Telecom, on the other hand, the IMS (ipmultimediasubsystem) architecture enables valued-added services composition for ip-based networks. Several ongoing efforts - referred to as “SOA for telecom” (SOA-TEL) - are attempting to merge SOA with telecom. The objective of these attempts is to enable Telecom operators and service providers to re-use existing service building blocks while building valued-added converged Web and telephony services. These services offer seamless experiences across various networks and, therefore, richer experiences, but are more complex than typical Web Services (e.g., transaction-based). The IEEE Next-Generation Service Overlay Networks (NGSON) working group is focusing on this integration and an architecture has been proposed. In addition, NGSON specifies context-aware, dynamically adaptive, and self-organizing networking capabilities. There are, however, a number of shortcomings in the NGSON architecture. This paper identifies these shortcomings and describes a possible solution. Finally, we discuss an illustrative use case scenario to help bring clarity to our proposed “enhanced” NSGON architecture.

The ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) is a key component of 3G networks aimed at enabling the seamless provisioning of ipmultimedia services to end users. Multiparty sessions (or conferences), which enable the conversational exchange of multimedia content between several parties, represent one of the specialized services supported by the IMS. Conferencing is the basis of a wide range of applications such as: debating; multiplayer gaming; and distance learning. In order to offer users a predictable experience and a controlled quality when using such applications, suitable QoS mechanisms must be supported in the IMS. We have previously proposed a two-party call differentiation scheme along with an architectural framework enabling its realization in the IMS. In this work, we apply our call differentiation scheme to the conferencing case, by studying the effects of call differentiation on the operation of the standard IMS conferencing architecture. This is achieved via a case study including the definition of a differentiated IMS conferencing architecture, the elaboration of various differentiated multiparty sessions scenarios, and the implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype.

As the number of services and users in Internet Protocol multimediasubsystem (IMS) keeps increasing, network virtualization seems to be a good alternative for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in order to provide better services to customers and save cost and time. As a matter of fact, it offers better performances in terms of resource management and automatic allocation. Furthermore, when an overload occurs in one of the Virtual Machine (VM), live migration is needed. This latter has to take into account the resource availability in the host VM and tend to load balance the nodes and connections. In this paper, we will present the challenges and issues of these emerging technologies.

The ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) is an ip based service control framework architecture. It uses Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) to control its multimedia sessions. The IMS core can be considered as a collection of different functions that are linked with standard interfaces, forming an IMS core network. The IMS has layers for transport, the core itself, and for services and applications. The complexity of the IMS core is greater than within pure Sip based networks. To help to make comparisons between different IMS networks, the ETSI-TISPAN has unified the IMS performance measurements by defining a common framework which to follow. In this paper, the Open IMS solution by the Fraunhover Focus Institute is compared with the OpenSipS, an open source Sip server used for user's registrations to network. The number of users was chosen to be 100 000, a large enough number to be considered as a suitable number of users for small or moderate business usage needs. Our study shows that both of the systems are able to handle this many users and, in the case of OpenSipS, with a clear margin. It was also discovered that both systems are reliable and are suitable for small and moderate business usage and further performance study trials.

The ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) is considered the current Service Delivery Platform standard for providing multimedia services in Next Generation Networks (NGN). Although fleet management services are traditionally focused on voice communications, they are evolving towards broadband multimedia ones. For this reason, this paper presents an open IMS-based platform that provides advanced multimedia professional services in the aforementioned scenario. After a detailed analysis of the fleet communication requirements, the IMS-based architecture of the platform is presented. Then, the deployed services are described, from the basic ones to those more advanced, e.g. Push-To-Talk (PTT) and videoconferencing. It stands out the feature of the platform, which provides an environment that facilitates the development, deployment and integration of new services. We finally discuss the importance of the contributions made by the platform for the fleet management scenarios.

3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) network system provides higher data rate and lower delay with improved coverage and spectrum efficiency for the wireless communications which leads to more creative services emerging, especially the multimedia services. 3GPP introduced the specification of IMS (ipmultimediasubsystem) which allows for cost efficient and flexible provision of enriched multimedia services over ip networks. In addition to building network environment for the multimedia service deployment, MBMS is proposed as the broadcast/multicast delivery technology. Up to now the controlling IMS and MBMS are separated subsystems. In this paper, we combine these two systems into an integrated network architecture which enables multimedia services to be deployed using MBMS specifications over IMS core network regarding the long-term vision of the 3GPP SAE/LTE architecture. Finally, the required signaling flow of some typical video services is depicted.
