Having Internet and wireless networks continue their dramatic advances requires a lot to be provided such as seamless and soft handover procedure. However, seamless and fast handover mechanism is still one of the main research issues. When a mobile node performs macro movements, the changes in some access nodes, base stations and access routers are unavoidable. Upon such changes, MNs must re-register in servers or re-invite corresponding nodes and gain the necessary information again. These procedures need enough time to be done so the delay may cause the ongoing session to lose connectivity. In this paper, a novel scheme has been proposed for handover in ipv6-based WiMAX network. In this scheme we used context transfer mechanism to transmit important session information in different levels of network and also the handover messages are combined with the context transfer messages to reduce the total overhead. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated by numerical analysis and simulation. The evaluation results show that the proposed method lead to lower handover disruption time and fewer messages passing overhead comparing to the current mode.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications generate more than 50% of Internet traffic and intensively consume network resources. Statistical machine learning approaches have been proposed as a promising way to detect P2P traffic. However, such systems require retraining in a regular basis. Hence, the generation of good quality P2P and non-P2P examples on a regular basis is not trivial. This paper proposes a three-class heuristics technique to provide regular training corpus generation of P2P and non-P2P traces. In the proposed work, three traffic classes are defined instead of two usually used in typical P2P heuristic classifiers. Based on 22 traffic traces downloaded from different shared resources and captured from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) campus network between March and June 2010, the proposed system is evaluated. The result shows that adding the third class improve the accuracy from 93% to 98%. This module could provide quality P2P examples with around 2% class noise that can be used to train P2P classifier on a regular basis.

In the IMS-based NGN service platform, live streaming is an important value-added service. But the distribution of streaming media is a difficult problem because of its massive bandwidth requirement and real-time requirement. Since ip multicast needs to update the whole network routers, this paper introduces P2P technology into live streaming system, which leverages the ipbased policy control and session-based QoS reservation mechanism of IMS. In the service system, the P2P cluster is constructed and managed in the central server deployed at the service plane without any modification to the standard IMS architecture. Several functional entities such as OMF, NRQF and P2P-enabled UE are extended based on the IMS-based ipTV architecture defined by ETSI TIAPAN. When the P2P-enabled UE initiates the service request, SCF as a Sip B2B UA is responsible for the session establishment among neighboring peers relying on the peer selected result from OMF. According to peer grouping judgment returned from NRQF, the OMF groups the UEs watching the same live channel into different peer clusters. Furthermore, this paper describes the session flows and QoS reserving procedure in the detail, and emphasizes the manageability of the P2P overlay.

Due to the rapid development of high bit-rate ip-based mobile networking architectures, the increasing number of end-user terminals, and the emerging convergence of different communication services with the ip world, the ipv6 protocol and the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) are considered to be the key technologies towards the realization of next generation mobile and wireless telecommunications. Both ipv6 and IMS are widely covered in the literature as self-possessed researches and studies. However, the challenge of provisioning ipv6-based IMS services over 3rd Generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks as well as related problems and performance issues were not considered so far. In this work, we try to fill this gap and raise attention on some potentially significant aspects of the integration of 3G UMTS, IMS and ipv6. Our research in this context mainly concerns the questions and challenges of the transition from ipv4 to ipv6 in all-ip 3G and beyond multimedia systems and their impacts on the performance of IMS services and applications. Different methods providing ipv6 support in existing mobile telecommunication architectures and the co-existence of ipv4/v6 during the first phases of the integration of the new Internet Protocol have substantial impact on the network and service/application performance. In order to quantify these effects, we designed and implemented a 3G UMTS testbed (including the IMS core) and compared the performance characteristics of three selected transition techniques with native ipv4 and ipv6 scenarios. Our results expose the main benefits and drawbacks of the five technologies and their actually available implementations.

We demonstrate several hidden issues of the public Internet concerning the fairness of best effort applications, and the differentiated service (DiffServ) architecture recommended for quality of service (QoS) provisioning. Then, we present and demonstrate a solution to those issues by wrapping DiffServ with a QoS Rate Management Protocol (QoS RMP) comprising two components. One is an end-to-end signalling and probing protocol at the ip layer, and another is a rate policing at edge routers based on network-wide information delivered by the signalling and probing protocol. Our claims are substantiated by an implementation and several examples running in our network testbed.

The presence of ipv4/ipv6 translation gateway provides transparent routing mechanism to ipv4-only nodes and ipv6-only nodes which trying to establish communication from disparate address realms. However, the mechanism breaks TCP/ip intrinsic functionalities that results in ipSec cannot be applied in this environment. The existing solutions to address the compatibility issues between translation gateway and ipSec are either to enhance the translation gateway operation or to modify ipSec architecture especially on IKE negotiation process. By realizing the fact that most of the intermediate networking devices such as translation gateway are beyond the end nodes administration, this paper discusses the existing solutions to improve IKE negotiation in order to ensure end to end ipSec interoperability across translation gateway. Inspired by this solution, this paper proposes new IKE authentication by using Address Based Keys with certificateless signature to alleviate the limitation of traditional pre-shared keys and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

The rapid evolution of broadband wireless Internet access in the recent years has been accompanied by a plethora of devices and applications that allow mobile users to work remotely or stay in touch with their friends as they go. With the increasing demand for ubiquitous access and the notion of being "always connected", the limitations of today's Internet technologies have become obvious, and various research activities are carried on to re-design aspects of the existing Internet architecture to eventually come to a Future Internet where applications do not suffer from transport protocols that are not able to cope with intermittent connectivity, high delay, and even substantial packet loss. While many clean-slate approaches can use network simulation to validate new protocols, the evaluation of enhancements to existing environments is more difficult. Especially for broadband wireless access involving a complex architecture like the Internet multimedia subsystem (IMS) the actual network characteristics cannot be modeled easily. To avoid oversimplification of simulation models, we have developed a tool set to measure some characteristics of a real network path and parameterize a link emulator based on the recorded data. The emulator uses the capabilities of the Linux packet scheduler and its queueing disciplines (qdiscs) to facilitate the evaluation of applications and protocols when facing these network conditions. Our approach enables reproducible tests of application behavior in a lab environment, without the uncertainties of changing conditions in the real world. The emulator was used in a research project to improve existing applications that are run on mobile devices while traveling. To dimension the emulator hardware, we have backed on a preliminary study on the prevalent application protocols being used in the target environment. This paper explores the architecture and implementation details of SCOPE platform. SCOPE is our prototype for spontaneous P2P social networking. It provides customized social networking application for local use cases. Below the network level, SCOPE relies on 802.11 ad-hoc mode and needs no infrastructure. SCOPE follows the hierarchical P2P model. Some nodes with higher computing capability become super-nodes. super-nodes form an overlay and provide the distributed data management system for the P2P social network. Client nodes (CNs) connect to super-nodes and rely on them for sharing their contents or accessing to the shared information. We have developed What's UP as our client agent tool which provide a vast range of applications from simple text/link sharing to P2P ip Telephony.

Smart cameras are important components in any Human Computer Interaction. In any remote surveillance scenario, smart cameras have to take intelligent decisions to select frames of interest to minimize communication and processing overhead. A clustering based change detection algorithm has been implemented in our smart camera system for filtering frames with significant changes. In this paper we propose a platform based framework for implementing clustering based change detection algorithm using HW-SW co-design based methodology. The complete system is implemented on Xilinx XUP Virtex-II Pro FPGA board. The overall algorithm is running on PowerPC405 and some of the blocks which are computationally intensive and more frequently called are implemented as custom ip using VHDL. Total gate count of the design is 2699K.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) operates 57 Institutions equipped with a range of mission critical Security, Communications and Access Management systems. These include CCTV assessment, intrusion detection, radio communications and door control systems. User Interfaces range from colour graphic touch screens to knobs, push buttons etc. Operational and technical challenges include the following issues: 1) sub-system technology is vendor specific, 2) reliability is critical in a challenging environment, 3) system maintenance is expensive, 4) inconsistent "Look and Feel" resulting in usability issues, 5) costly to add new systems, multiple, legacy and proprietary protocols & connectivity approaches, legacy installations are cable intensive, 6) minimal operator or maintenance training crossover, 7) procurement requirements drive "silo" system implementation. The objective is to develop a "next generation" systems architecture that will: "abstract" the subsystem user management interfaces, ensuring all sub-systems can be managed using a simple, consistent graphical user interface, accessible using a web browser; model the data and behaviour of the edge devices, doors; cameras, sensors, etc. and normalizes it; allowing them to be managed by and provide notifications to standard software based applications; support inter-domain interoperability; use an industry standard communications protocol, likely with extensions, such as BACNet or SNMP, for edge device to application server connectivity; use TCP/ip over fibre as the preferred transport, network and physical technologies; integrate legacy sub-systems into the application server using mediation software; define the look and feel of the graphical icons that represent the edge devices and the physical environment in which they are placed, so that each domain is presented in a consistent manner.
