More and more devices are becoming network enabled and are integrated within one large, distributed system. The service-oriented paradigm is the predominant concept for the implementation of this approach and helps to deal with heterogeneous network infrastructures. For long term deployments, e. g., in process and building automation, installations have to be adaptable over time. During runtime new services will be added to the network, old services will be replaced and deployed services will be relocated to adapt the network to environmental changes and new application fields. Handling these updates is challenging, because the impact on the currently executed applications has to be minimized. In general, such tasks are very application specific. However, the service based application development paradigm allows applying a generic approach for most of the scenarios. This paper presents such a generic solution by adding mechanisms, which are capable of handling service migration and service updates, to a sensor network middleware.

Convergence of fixed and mobile offers advantages for both consumers and service providers and is gaining momentum in the marketplace as operators are realizing the market opportunities for creating new revenue-generating services. As communication services are evolving, users are increasingly faced with a confusion of devices, subscriptions and numbers. Consumers are growing to expect ubiquitous, constant connectivity and access to all manner of information applications. Service providers, large and small, must simultaneously find ways to offset the declines in traditional revenue sources while continuing to drive top-line growth. The race within the telecommunications industry to achieve convergence is likely the catalyst for Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) fast-track development. The UMA standard brings wireless cellular telephony and 802.11 wireless networking together for seamless voice, data and multimedia services using one dual-mode handset (DMH). This article addresses the future path of telecommunication networks to a fixed-mobile convergence environment that meets the requirements of both consumers and providers. The article will address elements of UMA including access, benefits and architecture, along with competitive and technological issues involved with this prominent concept to fixed mobile-convergence.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is becoming the de-facto standard for ip-based multimedia services, while Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are gaining a lot of popularity due to their ability of capturing a rich set of contextual information and their high application potential. Making the rich set of contextual information, captured by WSNs, available to the IMS can greatly enhance its service provisioning capabilities and open the door to a wide range of novel multimedia services. We have previously proposed a solution for WSNs/IMS integration. One of the key components of this solution is a WSN/IMS gateway acting as intermediary between the two networks. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of this gateway. The gateway architecture proposed encompasses the information management and support functions needed to enable IMS interaction with different types of WSNs. A prototype of this architecture is built and tested using Ericsson's IMS simulated environment. Furthermore, two applications (a pervasive game and a personalized call control application) are used to demonstrate the system operation.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is a key component of 3G networks. It enables the seamless provision of multimedia services to end-users. multimedia conferencing is an important category of multimedia services in IMS. It is the basis of a wide range of multiparty applications including audio/video conferencing, multiparty gaming and distance learning. Floor control is an important feature of multimedia conferencing. It manages the access to shared resources such as audio and video channels. This paper proposes a novel architecture for floor control in IMS. The architecture is an add-on to the IMS conferencing architecture. It includes a comprehensive set of server side and client side API that exposes the floor control capabilities to application developers. It enables the use of emerging industry standards such as Sip MSCML and JSR 309. Furthermore it proposes a novel interface (the Sip Floor Server Control Mark Up (Sip - FSCML) Language) as an alternative to Megaco/H.248 for controlling floor control servers. We successively introduce the overall architecture, the novel APIs, the communication interfaces (including Sip-FSCML) and the proof of concept prototype.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is being widely adopted as the standard service delivery architecture for Next Generation Networks. The IMS delivers rich ip-based multimedia services to end users. In order to fully utilize the potential of the IMS, the convergence of the World Wide Web and IMS capabilities is imperative. Services composed of Web 2.0 technologies and IMS based call control and multimedia capabilities are becoming popular. In this work, we focus on video service creation in the IMS, with an emphasis on user generated video content. We discuss the composition of richer video-enabled services, by converging technologies such as the IMS, Web 2.0, presence, location and social networking. We first develop a framework for video streaming over the IMS, using a Media Resource Function (MRF) and an Application Server (AS). We then demonstrate the flexibility and capabilities of our framework, by implementing rich services around video delivery which are suitable for both fixed and mobile terminals. We also provide the basis for a business model when offering these features and services. We further discuss how the video framework can be extended and made available as a web based service using REST and Parlay X APIs. © 2009 IEEE.

ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is widely considered as the main solution for the next generation multimedia rich communication. In order to provide multi-level security service in IMS to mobile users for multimedia applications, it is insufficient to take the security benefits into consideration, but adequately analyzing the impact of security policies in IMS on the performance cost quantitatively is also necessary and significant. In this paper, we first propose a novel study of IMS performance by a QPN model to much more precisely describe Sip signaling in IMS, and made performance evaluation. Then we defined totally seven levels of IMS security policies according to IMS specifications in 3GPP and proposed QoP partition model which quantitatively reflects strength of protection of Sip signaling and users' security needs. Further more, we did our original contributions to use the QPN model to evaluate the impacts of security mechanism on system performance cost quantitatively. With the multi-view security partition introduced, different security policies could be adjusted according to the application and users' security requirements, so that multi-level security service can be provided to diverse users and applications for a better tradeoff between security requirements and system performance in IMS. This paper presents an ipTV service architecture using Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) for session and media control and based on the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) concept. The proposed ipTV architecture is suitable for scalable converged networks, like flexible multimedia delivery of personalized streams over a variety of channels and networking infrastructures, including mobile networks. A new Quality of Service (QoS) adaptation method allows dynamic updates of session parameters, in order to maximize the Quality of Experience (QoE) and turning the solution suitable for live multimedia streaming, independently of the cast mode (unicast or multicast). The details of both the ipTV Application Server and the ipTV Client prototypical implementations are described, as well as the results of field tests carried out across different Fixed and Mobile access networks.

This paper proposes a novel lookup service enabler for presence-based applications and its architecture in the 3GPP ip multimedia subsystem (IMS). The new service enabler makes possible the realization of a wide range of new (or enhanced) enduser applications. It allows end-users to discover groups of persons (or objects) that meet specific constraints (e.g. have specific interests or abilities, are available at a specific time at a specific location, and/or have specific affiliation(s)). The architecture relies on a novel abstract presence object (i.e. a non-user presentity) that represents a group of entities that may belong to different domains. The current presence model and presence information data format (PIDF) are extended to support this object. A new entity (i.e. a lookup server) is introduced to enable the lookup service through a seamless aggregation of the results collected from the different presence servers deployed across the implicated IMS networks. A proof-of-concept prototype was built and is described in the paper. ©2009 IEEE.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is the main component of 3G networks. It aims at the seamless provisioning of multimedia services to end-users. This paper presents a case study on multiparty multimedia game development in IMS. It first reviews the APIs and tools available for multiparty multimedia conferencing applications (e.g. games) development in IMS. It then presents the semantics of the game studied in the case and discusses the implementation architecture. The game is a revisited version of the well known capture the flag game. We have developed it with the Ericsson Service Development Studio (SDS) and implemented a prototype. The prototype is described along with the performance measurements. The lessons learned are presented. © 2009 IEEE.
