In this paper we present iRide (intelligent ride), an IF multimediasubsystem (HAS) application for warning drivers about hazardous situations on the road. iRide takes real-time information about road conditions and traffic situations from a wireless sensor network installed directly in the road surface. Upon logging to the iRide system, users start to receive periodic updates about the situation on the road along their route ahead. iRide is able to predict hazardous situations like slippery surface or dangerous distance to the nearest car and help drivers avoid accidents. We describe the service and the supporting network architecture of iRide. We discuss the major challenges associated with designing an IMS application for ITS, an intelligent transport system. Having a prototype implementation working on a small scale, we take it to the next step to perform system dimensioning and then verify the feasibility of having such a system using OPNET simulations.

ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) defines a unified framework that enables convergence of voice, video, data and mobile network technology over an ip-based infrastructure. It is regarded as the standard service delivery platform for providing multimediaapplications in the Next Generation Network (NGN). Despite all the hypes, the adoption, support and interest on IMS are still protracted among operators, service providers, device manufacturers and developers. We believe one of the main reasons for the delay is that these parties felt uncertain on IMS over the setup cost, and were generally trapped in a vicious circle, where one party depends on another to initiate and commit their support on IMS. As the national research institute in Malaysia, we have taken the challenge to break the vicious circle, and committed to build and provide an IMS Center of Excellence (CoE) as testbed for all parties to conduct their application development, experiments and interoperability tests. This paper describes the objectives and benefits of establishing our IMS testbed, our approach to break the vicious circle, the formation and responsibility of an NGN/IMS workgroup (WG), and the specifications and focus of our IMS testbed.

This paper, in accordance with the authors' continuing research investigates the effect of adding extra servers in Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) signaling network on session setup delay in the ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS). The effect of applying more than one server in reducing waiting time in each of the nodes of the system is previously investigated by the authors in 131 and applying more servers as a way of overcoming overload in IMS is addressed in [4]. In this contribution, the delay analysis is explored by describing the Sip signaling traffic with M/M/r notation. Then the Sip servers overload problem is addressed and the effect of adding servers on network throughput and call loss probability is investigated. Finally, the total waiting time probability distribution is derived.

The ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) brings more functionality into communication networks and allows them to offer a range of services beyond the mere transport of media. IMS standard multiparty services include audiovisual conferencing and Push To Talk (PTT/PoC), which are powered by specific (and expensive) servers performing media handling functions in a centralized manner. These multiparty services mimic traditional telecommunication services and are specialized in audio and video conferencing. This approach lacks the flexibility to provide innovative multiparty applications that require custom media or distributed topologies. For example, an online game may include voice communication among players, but it requires additional means to communicate the game state among players. applications of this kind have to rely on custom servers to provide multiparty functionality and would benefit from a common, media-agnostic, conferencing framework in the IMS. This paper focuses on providing generic multiparty functionality in the IMS by making the most of the XML Document Management (XDM) services: group management, event delivery and search functions. The paper describes a lightweight enabler implemented on top of the XDM that supports distributed applications in the IMS.

Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) is the term used to describe a wide range of mobile services that converge elements of fixed communications infrastructure to complement the core mobile service. ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) is the approach towards merging the fixed and mobile worlds together with the Internet. It enables the efficient provision of an open set of highly integrated multimedia services, combining web browsing, instant messaging, presence, Voip and multimedia content delivery etc. over a heterogeneous access network and technologies. Unfortunately, the adoption, support and interest on IMS are still protracted among various players such as operators, service providers, device manufacturers and developers. We believe these players were generally trapped in a vicious circle and hence felt uncertain on adopting IMS, besides having to accommodate the high setup cost, lack of proven business models and further was overshadowed by the web technologies. As the national research institute in Malaysia, we have taken the challenge to set up the OpenFMC (TM) lab in Malaysia as to break the vicious circle and to develop an IMS Center of Excellence (CoE) ecosystem through opening up an IMS testbed for all parties to conduct their application development, R&D experiments and interoperability tests. This paper describes the objectives and benefits of establishing our OpenFMC (TM) lab, our approach to break the vicious circle, our proposed IMS ecosystem program, the details on provisioning of lab equipments/components, and network topology.

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is the wireless standards development organization setting the standards for evolving mobile broadband beyond the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). The ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) is an architectural framework standardized by the 3GPP for delivering ipmultimedia services based on the IETF Session Initiation Protocol (Sip). As the integration of multiple ipmultimediaapplications via resolving their interactions is an important requirement for the IMS, the 3GPP Services and System Aspects Working Group 2 (SA2) launched a feasibility study on enhancing IMS for better service interaction management in Release 8. This paper reports some important results of this feasibility study from 2006 to 2008 under 3GPP TR 23.810. It describes an incremental enhancement to IMS service control to enable dynamic service interaction management. Several examples we contributed to TR 23.810 are presented in this report to illustrate the ideas. Finally, the report points out open issues for further research in this area.
