In this work we present a model for online charging of media-rich services supporting dynamic QoS negotiation, within the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) emulated environment. In the QoS negotiation process a user, a network provider, and a service provider negotiate about the session to be initiated, resulting in an user-specific combination of media components within the final service configuration. The existing IMS Policy Control and Charging (PCC) architecture, although offering a high level of charging flexibility, is not well-suited for charging dynamic services requiring a negotiable QoS. The proposed testbed extends the policy-based PCC functionality, offering a tariff determination scenario for such services. The approach is illustrated by using the Web 3D game as an example.

Provisioning of multimedia content to users being in different contexts (e.g. device capabilities, network conditions, location, user mode, user activity, etc.) and associated to various business models (e.g. prepaid, post-paid, session-based, etc.), challenges service providers to develop service capabilities that can be shared across all services and make use of network delivery functions more efficiently. Enabling the delivery of multimedia services following Service Oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm is the main objective of this work. In this paper we present a set of basics elementary functions that enable efficient multimedia content delivery over various transmission modes (unicast, multicast or broadcast) and different heterogeneous networks, utilizing ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) to control and manage sessions, hiding therefore access dependencies and network complexity. A reference architecture is described along with implementation details that allow the integration with a converged media delivery framework. Then we present the performance of the implementation as well as the related signaling interfaces that were evaluated through a set of live measurements. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Because of recent advances in both client devices and wireless communications, industry has started to look at the potentially relevant market of Location Based Services (LBSs). ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) and IMS-based presence service are putting together and standardizing the needed support for location data dissemination in industry-level LBS applications. However, the deployment of presence-based LBSs is still very challenging since frequent location updates have to be timely delivered to the (potentially many) subscribed LBS applications. The paper proposes a novel presence service solution with two original extensions to address the above challenging scalability issues: a load-balancing model working at both IMS infrastructure and service levels;a novel component to automatically de-/activate new IMS infrastructure/presence service nodes by need, also by dynamically redistributing the incoming load The prototype of this enhanced IMS presence service, fully-compliant with existing IMS standards, has been deployed and validated in our university campus wireless infrastructure: the reported performance results show improved scalability and limited load-balancing costs.

In these circumstances IMS has emerged out as a key player. IMS is basically a network architecture consisting of an ip-based core network connected to multiple access networks to provide a converged service to wireless, wireline and cable subscribers. IMS has established itself as a foundation for future wireless and wireline convergence. It provides an opportunity to build an open ip based service platform that will enable an easy and efficient deployment of new multimedia communication services mixing telecom and data services. One thing which really makes a difference is that a common IMS based service platform can be used to serve various access mechanisms such as WiMAX, WiFi, UNITS, GSM, CDMA etc. IMS fills the gap between two of the most successful communication paradigm cellular and internet technology. The convergence of telecommunication and Web 2.0 services is leading to new opportunities for the telecommunications market. Companies are looking for ways to include their services in Web 2.0 applications. Predictions suggest that future telecommunication networks,will be based on the ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS), an all ip telecommunication core network. This paper describes an approach to combining Web 2.0 enabled applications, namely widgets, with telecommunication features using IMS. Widgets axe small applications based on Web technologies that run on the client device. A new abstraction layer with interfaces for the different telecommunication features will be introduced. In addition a widget engine that makes these telecommunication interfaces available to its widgets will be presented. This will allow the rapid development of IMS applications for external developers and the combination of other Web 2.0 services with IMS features.
