Satellites had been successful in the past due to their wide area coverage and speedy deployment of new services especially in remote regions of Europe and the rest of the world. The future development of broadband satellite systems providing services based on the Internet Protocol (ip) needs to be stimulated by means of common standards. This paper presents the ETSI BSM PEP terminal architecture, PEP usage scenarios and security configurations for successful PEP implementations.

This paper proposes a novel lookup service enabler for presence-based applications and its architecture in the 3GPP ip multimedia subsystem (IMS). The new service enabler makes possible the realization of a wide range of new (or enhanced) end-user applications. It allows end-users to discover groups of persons (or objects) that meet specific constraints (e.g. have specific interests or abilities, are available at a specific time at a specific location, and/or have specific affiliation(s)). The architecture relies on a novel abstract presence object (i.e. a non-user presentity) that represents a group of entities that may belong to different domains. The current presence model and presence information data format (PIDF) are extended to support this object. A new entity (i.e. a lookup server) is introduced to enable the lookup service through a seamless aggregation of the results collected from the different presence servers deployed across the implicated IMS networks. A proof-of-concept prototype was built and is described in the paper.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is becoming the de-facto standard for ip-based multimedia services, while Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are gaining a lot of popularity due to their ability of capturing a rich set of contextual information and their high application potential. Making the rich set of contextual information, captured by WSNs, available to the IMS can greatly enhance its service provisioning capabilities and open the door to a wide range of novel multimedia services. We have previously proposed a solution for WSNs/IMS integration. One of the key components of this solution is a WSN/IMS gateway acting as intermediary between the two networks. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of this gateway. The gateway architecture proposed encompasses the information management and support functions needed to enable IMS interaction with different types of WSNs. A prototype of this architecture is built and tested using Ericsson's IMS simulated environment. Furthermore, two applications (a pervasive game and a personalized call control application) are used to demonstrate the system operation.

For service providers online charging of composite services is necessary in order to manage financial risks of service delivery in multi-domain environments. At service level, inter-domain composite services consist of one or more service components, e.g. access service, IMS communication service or content service, delivered by different service providers. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a framework for off-line and online charging of IMS-based services. However, the current Online Charging System (OCS) specified by 3GPPP does not support an online charging function for composite services. The contribution of this work lies in the design of an online charging system that addresses the required charging functionalities based on the IMS online charging architecture. The design consists of a service composition information model guided by the NGOSS and SID concepts of the Tele-Management Forum, a set of functional charging system components and their interactions at their interfaces.

In this paper, we propose an embedded scalable video codec (SVC) codec to use in intelligent image system. For efficient SVC VLSI design, we use a shared memory method and variable pipelined architecture. Many SVC codec systems are based on large memory and high frequency clock due to its characteristics of input images. To overcome these problems and use in real-time applications, we optimize memory control scheme and pipeline control method, which make it approximates a computation time by the use of past frame calculation time. ©2009 IEEE.

Providing rich data collaboration services in conferencing system is vital to the success of Sip-based communication system. It not only presents design and implementation challenges, but also gives an opportunity to develop rich and innovative collaboration services conveniently to provide users with novel communication experience. In this paper we present an extended data collaboration mechanism for XCON conferencing system over ip network It includes uniform media description, media negotiation and media delivery processes. The mechanism adopts the extended SDP and offer/answer model as media description and negotiation mechanism. And it uses RTP/RTCP and extended MSRP as the media transport control protocols respectively for audio/video and various TCP-based data collaboration applications. In this paper, the design principle and concrete implementation details is presented and analyzed in detail. We have developed a prototype implementation to prove our architecture's feasibility and scalability.

While there have been tremendous efforts to develop the architecture and protocols to support advanced Internet-based services over 3G and 4G networks, IMS is far from being deployed in a wide scale manner. Effort to create an operator controlled signaling infrastructure using ip-based protocols has resulted in a large number of functional components and interactions between those components. Thus, the carriers are trying to explore alternative ways to deploy IMS that will allow them to manage their network in a cost effective manner while offering the value-added services. One of such approaches is self organization of IMS. The self organizing IMS can enable the IMS functional components and corresponding nodes to adapt them dynamically based on the features like network load, number of users and available system resources. This paper introduces such a self organizing and adaptive IMS architecture, describes the advanced functions and demonstrates the initial results from the prototype test-bed. In particular, we show how all IMS functional components can be merged and split among different nodes as the network demand and environment change without disrupting the ongoing sessions or calls. Although it is too early to conclude the effectiveness of self organizing IMS, initial results are encouraging and it may provide additional incentives to the operators for network evolution.

ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) defines a unified framework that enables convergence of voice, video, data and mobile network technology over an ip-based infrastructure. It is regarded as the standard service delivery platform for providing multimedia applications in the next generation network (NGN). Despite all the hypes, the adoption, support and interest on IMS are still protracted among operators, service providers, device manufacturers and developers. We believe one of the main reasons for the delay is that these parties felt uncertain on IMS over the setup cost, and were generally trapped in a vicious circle, where one party depends on another to initiate and commit their support on IMS. As the national research institute in Malaysia, we have taken the challenge to break the vicious circle, and committed to build and provide an IMS Center of Excellence (CoE) as testbed for all parties to conduct their application development, experiments and interoperability tests. This paper describes the objectives and benefits of establishing our IMS testbed, our approach to break the vicious circle, the formation and responsibility of an NGN/IMS workgroup (WG), and the specifications and focus of our IMS testbed.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is a key component of 3G networks. It enables the seamless provision of multimedia services to end-users. multimedia conferencing is an important category of multimedia services in IMS. It is the basis of a wide range of multiparty applications including audio/video conferencing, multiparty gaming and distance learning. Floor control is an important feature of multimedia conferencing. It manages the access to shared resources such as audio and video channels. This paper proposes a novel architecture for floor control in IMS. The architecture is an add-on to the IMS conferencing architecture. It includes a comprehensive set of server side and client side API that exposes the floor control capabilities to application developers. It enables the use of emerging industry standards such as Sip MSCML and JSR 309. Furthermore it proposes a novel interface (the Sip Floor Server Control Mark Up (Sip-FSCML) Language) as an alternative to Megaco/H.248 for controlling floor control servers. We successively introduce the overall architecture, the novel APIs, the communication interfaces (including Sip-FSCML) and the proof of concept prototype.

Dynamic blended services represent a complex activity specified by composing multiple service enablers based on the user contextual data and operator defined rules associated with single session. Telecom service providers are envisioning a need for creating and introducing such dynamically blended services in ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) networks with a quick turnaround time. Service developing languages for representing the service logic of dynamic blended services should provide various features like readability, usability, extensibility and state transition capabilities. Also the service execution environment should support chaining mechanism, policy enforcement, data federation and provide context awareness. These features will help the application developers to rapidly develop and host the blended services to meet the upcoming end user requirements. The traditional approach, i.e., building blended service logic from scratch using the C, C++, Java programming languages may not address all the above challenges efficiently. One of the potential approaches to address the above challenges is workflow based modeling for the blended services. We have implemented novel workflow based design architecture to present a blending of services over IMS core network by using JBoss jBPM (Java Business Process Management) engine at core of our proposed centralized service capability interaction manager (SCIM) architecture. The considered use case is designed and implemented using jPDL (jBPM process development language). We also integrated the Open-Sip-Presence server and the Live555 Video streaming server with proposed SCIM application server (AS). A prototype of a content server implementation has been done which acts as a service capability in the context of discussed use case. Furthermore, UCT IMS Client has been enhanced to validate the proposed Use Case.
