The use of broadcast TV channels is growing considerably so that the number of users (scalability) and the need to manage traffic (bandwidth) are challenges for network design and dimensioning. Broadcast and live channels show strict requirements to operate on a continuous basis in content distribution scenarios in terms of delay, huge demand of bandwidth and characterized by very dynamic variations. There arises the need for more efficient applications and network solutions to meet expectations in quality and number of users and, at the same time, make feasible a high degree of penetration of services taken into account that ISPs and network operators infrastructures are increasingly saturated. This paper discusses the existing solutions to distribute video broadcast and describes new emerging concepts from the standpoint of efficient use of bandwidth and network traffic in the Internet environment. Theoretical solutions are proposed at various levels, from application to network, such as the introduction of location in peer-to-peer overlay networks, active provider P2P architecture or P4P which combines peer to-peer technology with information from the network topology and inter-domain multicast.

Providing rich data collaboration services in conferencing system is vital to the success of Sip-based communication system. It not only presents design and implementation challenges, but also gives an opportunity to develop rich and innovative collaboration services conveniently to provide users with novel communication experience. In this paper we present an extended data collaboration mechanism for XCON conferencing system over ip network. It includes uniform media description, media negotiation and media delivery processes. The mechanism adopts the extended SDP and offer/answer model as media description and negotiation mechanism. And it uses RTP/RTCP and extended MSRP as the media transport control protocols respectively for audio/video and various TCP-based data collaboration applications. In this paper, the design principle and concrete implementation details is presented and analyzed in detail. We have developed a prototype implementation to prove our architecture’s feasibility and scalability.

This paper presents an architectural model for wireless peer-to-peer (WP2P) file sharing system for ubiquitous mobile devices. File sharing is one of the rationales for computer networks with increasing demand for file sharing applications and technologies in small and large enterprise networks and on the Internet. With the popularity of mobile phones in day-to-day activities, P2P file sharing in mobile phones is highly desirable, especially in 2/2.5 G mobile networks. The proposed model is based on a hybrid or semi centralized architecture with the central database server acting as an interface between the mobile devices. The P2P communication model employs the short messaging service (SMS) and multimedia messaging service (MMS) as the messaging medium. The mobile phone initiates a search for a particular file on the mobile P2P network using a general packet radio service (GPRS) connection. The database replies the ldquosearcherrdquo mobile phone with a list of all the available files and the details of the mobile phones that have them. Using this information, the requesting mobile phone makes a SMS connection to any of the phones provided by the database server. The mobile phone with the file then sends it to the requesting mobile phone using the MMS. We present an architectural model using mobile proxy, SMS and MMS, for a mobile P2P network for 2/2.5 G networks despite operator constraints.

The main function of a Rating Function in an online charging system is to perform real-time calculations of the tariff. In the context of the ip multimedia Subystem, and the consequent revolution in terms of services and applications, quality of service and network performance play an important role in application delivery and user experience. Consequently, a Rating Function that integrates these new parameters is important to address the challenge of an accurate real-time charging of applications in ip multimedia subsystem environments. The present contribution suggests an approach for modeling rating functions in the Online Charging System of IMS. Furthermore it defines the interactions between the rating function and service elements and network elements and business actors.

With the emergence of SOA and Mashups technologies, telecom service providers now look toward Web 2.0 and next-generation network technologies to redefine the customer experience. How can telecom legacy applications be handled to fit in these trends? With ip multimedia subsystem (IMS), the Next Generation Network (NGN) architecture, the delivered multimedia services can be accessed by users from various devices via ip network or traditional telephony systems. Yet, with the characteristics of Web 2.0, new social capabilities could be applied to these services and personalization services could be provided. This technical paper consists of two parts: "SOA-lization" of telecom architectures, and "Web 2.0-ification" of the same. The SOA-lization section suggests a methodology for transforming both legacy applications and next-generation IMS into a Service-Oriented architecture offering. The key emphasis here is a suggested analysis methodology that addresses how to migrate to SOA based on an existing legacy service layer. A case study using telecom solution applications will be discussed. The Web 2.0-ification section will first illustrate the characteristics of Web 2.0 and identify which telecom capabilities can fit in a Web 2.0 context. A case study of how to Web 2.0-enable using Ajax and Mashup technologies both in data level and GUI level will be discussed. To conclude, this technical paper describes techniques to SOA-lize legacy application and then to Web 2.0-ify the same or similar applications. These suggested techniques should be easily applicable to any other industry when Web 2.0 technologies are adopted.

ipTV is a system used to deliver digital television services to the consumers through broadband. This delivery of digital television is made possible by using Internet Protocol over a broadband connection, usually in a managed network rather than the public Internet to preserve quality of service guarantees. The Internet Protocol (ip) multimedia subsystem, better known as "The IMS", is based on the specification of the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) as standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). IMS is an architecture for the convergence of data, speech and mobile networks and is based on a wide range of protocols, of which most have been developed by the IETF. It combines and enhances them to allow real time services on top of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UNITS) packet-switched domain. This paper presents various standardization efforts for ipTV, deployment of ipTV over ip multimedia subsystem. It further also deals the advantage of IMS based ipTV, its implementation challenges, performance and capacity, and testing requirement.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) portends major changes for all parties involved in the exchange of digital content and services. As the IMS architecture moves from specifications to implementations, real-world considerations can influence deployments in ways that have noteworthy security implications. In this work, we present and exemplify a systematic security evaluation of IMS deployments using a threat modeling approach. We also offer suggestions for possible mitigations where appropriate. The experiments conducted are on a production-class IMS deployment and a separate IMS testing environment.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is a promising technology, designed to provide ip based telephony and real-time multimedia services. The 3GPP specifications define a complex IMS architecture for the convergence of voice, video and data. It enables provisioning variety of multimedia services, such Voip, video streaming, conferencing, instant messaging, web browsing, e-mail, push-to-talk, online gaming or ip television. IMS is almost independent on the access technology and uses many application protocols. These features allow operators to deploy new customer-care and business models. It would by impossible to do this, without having solved the issues of security and management of subscriber credentials. In this article, we describe the IMS architecture, WLAN access technology and possibilities to securely access application servers. Finally, we propose a test bed for integration and testing of Sip and non-Sip based services and evaluate the advantages of proposed scenario, from operators' and customers' point of view.

The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is an open ip based service infrastructure that enables an easy deployment of new rich multimedia services mixing voice and data. The IMS is considered as a next generation Service Delivery Platform (SDP) on top of different wireless and wire line access networks. It is based on the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) which is gaining more and more acceptance in the Voip market. As an emerging technology, the Sip standard will certainly be the target of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and consequently IMS will also inherit this problem. Therefore, it is very important to protect IMS resources from DoS threats. In this paper, we suggest an efficient solution for protecting the IMS networks from such attacks.
