Session setup time is a critical factor when it comes to multimediaapplications, such as instant messaging and Voice over ip (Voip). Some of the factors that affect the session setup delay are length of Sip messages, bandwidth and packet loss in the wireless link. This paper aims at reducing the session setup delay in UMTS ipmultimediasubsystem. We propose compression of Sip header by Text-based Compressing using Cache and Blank (TCCB) approach and a caching scheme. In caching scheme, during registration, the address of Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) of mobile users are cached at Interrogating - CSCF (I-CSCF). Typically, it takes 300ms to find the address of called mobile user's Serving CSCF and it can be minimized using cache. A simulation has been carried out to analyze the effect of Sip header compression and caching scheme. The result shows that for a 9.6 Kbps channel, a reduction of 25% is possible and for 19.2Kbps channel 19% reduction can be achieved.

Natural communication among people happens in flexible ways and is strongly affected by the users' situation (such as communication tools available, user's location, and user's preferences). This situation or context information is seldom used to initiate communication sessions among users. Current communication systems are indifferent about users' context, often require time consuming manual configurations and often result in conferencing tools not being easily accessible when needed. This leads to lower adoption of innovative communications services. IMS Sip (ipmultimediasubsystem, Session Initiation Protocol) sessions allow users to access the session from different points of contact (home, office, etc.), however, IMS still requires a prior knowledge of all Sip components that might be used in a Sip session. Furthermore, IMS makes limited use of context information (mainly user-defined availability). To address these issues our research approach combines techniques from pervasive computing with IMS networking principles to facilitate compositions of communication sessions based on users' context. We propose a platform and APIs for pervasive application development support to allow greater intelligence in IMS applications. We additionally provide mechanisms for IMS applications to apply their intelligence to the configuration of physical devices and web resources used to set up a conference. The innovations proposed in this paper are: (1) A new standard for intelligent IMS-based conferencing applications. (2) Application Development Interfaces (APIs) for a platform for pervasive computing. (3) An architecture for a pervasive IMS platform.

It moots the usage of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) *** Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) signaling and Session Description Protocol (SDP) for managing multimediaapplications over 3G networks. This paper is based on impact of Sip messaging on the IMS core network. Present work concludes that though Sip over IMS provides more options and QOS features to the user but it results in increased signaling traffic and call set up latency as compared to the Simple Sip (Non-IMS). Convergence of the cellular world to an all-ip domain has stimulated the development of Internet multimediasubsystem (IMS) service architecture, which is touted by service providers and vendors as the next generation solution for breaking the barriers not only between cellular mid ip worlds, but also between wireline and wireless networks. Although many GSM operators and legacy network service providers are adapting rapidly to the IMS worlds the pace of this adaptation process is still quite low in certain parts of the world. In this paper, we propose a novel IMS concept, referred to as Service Concentration Node (SCN), which enables the operators to provide their customers with IMS services that are offered in other domains with which the operator has a signed agreement, and thereby facilitates the utilization of a vast amount of IMS services in various operator networks. The formulated technical framework as well as, its accompanying business model is quite promising in enriching the IMS services experience in next generation networks.

Mobile ipv6 and Sip are protocols designed to support different types of mobility. Mobile ipv6 has been used to support mobility in ip networks and Sip has been used for Voice over ipapplications. It is the signalling protocol of the ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS). In this paper both protocols have been simulated and compared in order to observe their performance for Voice over ip (Voip) applications. In this paper the architectures proposed by researchers in order to combine Mobile ipv6 and Sip have also been investigated and compared to analyse their advantages and disadvantages. A network scenario, running Mobile ipv6 and Sip for IMS, has also been simulated in order to evaluate the performance offered by the two protocols and to compare them with the results from the simulation of the pure Mobile ipv6 and Siparchitectures. The comparison shows that the combined scenario offers better performance similar to the one obtained using only Mobile ipv6 with Route Optimization. The scenario simulated was also compared with the integrated architectures for Mobile ipv6 and Sip that were investigated.

Delivering multimedia services over Next Generation Networks challenges the developers to define a unified and converged framework. However the ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Projects offers basic features of such a framework, which enables the provisioning of multimedia services with quality of service and mobility support across heterogeneous networks. The Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has recently launched the FOKUS Media Interoperability Lab (MIL) which is based on the "Open IMS Playground" testbed. MIL is as an open environment gathering all major IMS core components, and a triple play toolkit originating from own developments as well as major industry players, which can be used by academic and industrial partners for early prototyping of innovative interactive multimedia services and the related system components. This paper introduces the relevant technologies and provides an overview of the lab architecture and the relevant multimedia services at FOKUS. The validation of this architecture is demonstrated with an implementation of different enablers within the Playground as well as an adapted User Agent demonstrating the interaction of streaming and basic NGN telecommunication services.

Recently, a move from traditional, network specific multimedia services to ip-based solutions could be observed. Although many of these applications have similar requirements and address the same issues, individual solutions based on specialized protocols are commonly used. This specialization prohibits the extraction and reuse of common services and hinders the interoperability between services and the integration with external components. A promising approach to overcome these disadvantages is the adoption of the service-oriented paradigm in communication protocols and a modularization into cooperating services. In this paper, we present a generic framework for multimediaapplications consisting of a set of reusable Web service components, a modeling language based on finite state automata and a compiler. The results of a BPEL based prototypical implementation of a Voice-over-ip application show that the service oriented approach and the automaton based modeling language can satisfy the above mentioned criteria and ease application development through a higher level of abstraction. On the other hand our benchmarks indicate that current Web service technologies can lead to an insufficient performance, depending on the application scenario. Possible solutions to circumvent these deficiencies are presented at the end of the paper.

Packet classification has been critical data path function for supporting Quality of Service (QoS), Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) and broad range of multimedia services. Hardware based solution is necessary to keep up with high-speed rate up to OC192 processing. However, the range match in multi-fields classification is still one of the bottleneck problems. In this paper, a novel structure called Range Match Block is designed. The Range Match Block stores range rules directly and performs range match parallel in each entry at high-speed. Experimental results show the Range Match Block can process about 66.7 Million Packets Per Second (Mpps). Furthermore, we propose a multi-field packet classification architecture based on Range Match Block and Ternary CAM. The architecture is well-suited for all kinds of network applications.
