As a result of the evolution of computer and networking technologies, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has proposed the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) as a key element in Next Generation Networks (NGN) that supports multimedia services in the packet switched domain. To use IMS services, users should register in IMS network and to have their information be registered in IMS Databases. When transport media is mobile and user handover in the access network, the re-registeration procedure is needed. This is similar to initial register procedure and leads to excessive transmission delay. In this paper a solution is introduced to reduce the re-registration delay by reducing the number of required contacts with IMS Databases. We have compared re-registration time in our proposed scheme with the standard scheme in OPNET modeler 10.5. Simulation results have confirmed better performance for the proposed scheme.

A network based method for an intelligent distribution of transport resources of heterogeneous points of attachment to the network among mobile nodes with multiple network interfaces is presented in this paper. Selection of the used network for a particular multimedia session is based on the QoS situation in access networks available for mobile nodes. A possible realisation using ip multimedia subsystem on the signalling plane is described. The proposed idea is based on the fixed & mobile converged network architecture with Ethernet based data transmission developed in the ScaleNet* project. The performance of the presented mechanism has been evaluated by computer simulation.

This paper addresses the inter-operability problem of multimedia terminal in media content delivery over heterogeneous networks and devices. We design and implement a terminal which includes a content browser providing presentation, navigation and interaction with MPEG-21 digital item declaration (MPEG-21 DID) in order to support universal media access (UMA). We optimized the architecture in a client-server distributed approach with Web Service support. This terminal enables the MPEG-21 standard compliant content accessible on different terminal devices via common Web browsers. Such a design strategy illustrates a next-generation multimedia terminal supporting inter-operability in multimedia content adaptation over a heterogeneous delivery chain.

This article focuses on the interconnection border control function (IBCF) entity in the current ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture. Based on the analysis of various types of IMS interconnection scenarios, we describe our proof-of concept solution. We evaluate the signaling in several interconnected IMS domains using open sip express router (OpenSER) based prototype of IBCF.

Packet classification has been critical data path function for supporting quality of service (QoS), resource reservation protocol (RSVP) and broad range of multimedia services. Hardware based solution is necessary to keep up with high-speed rate up to OC192 processing. However, the range match in multi-fields classification is still one of the bottleneck problems. In this paper, a novel structure called range match block is designed. The range match block stores range rules directly and performs range match parallel in each entry at high-speed. Experimental results show the range match block can process about 66.7 million packets per second (Mpps). Furthermore, we propose a multi-field packet classification architecture based on range match block and ternary CAM. The architecture is well-suited for all kinds of network applications.

This tutorial will introduce the notion of network convergence and next generation networks by looking at the evolution of telecommunication services and Internet services and the related infrastructure. Special emphasis will be placed on describing the principles and architecture of the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS), a common service platform standard defined by IETF, 3GPP, ETSI TISPAN, and Cablelab, which is based on internet protocols and intelligent network principles. Besides the IMS core operation also the IMS application provisioning principles will be illustrated. It will be shown that IMS is well designed to support seamless presence and community oriented multimedia information and communication services across various networks. However, a critical comparison of IMS with classic Voip infrastructures, P2P service platforms and the emerging Web 2.0 will be performed. The tutorial ends with an introduction of the Fraunhofer FOKUS Open IMS Playground - a globally known pioneering IMS testbed, and the corresponding open source IMS core system, which has been released in 2006 and since then provides the foundation for many academic and industry NGN/IMS testbeds around the globe.

Todaypsilas mobile satellite systems are built to support a packet switched all ip communications infrastructure based on ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) leveraging the benefits of solutions already available in terrestrial networks. IMS technology provides a Sip based open platform that enables operators to introduce multimedia applications quickly and in a cost effective manner. Although IMS is very well suited for terrestrial ip networks, it is challenged by high propagation delay satellite environment with low data rates to provide equivalent levels of quality of experience enjoyed by subscribers of circuit switched systems. In this article, we first provide an overview of Circuit Switched and IMS Packet Switched based call flows for mobile satellite systems. We then concentrate specifically on voice call setup time and show how Circuit Switched architecture provides significantly better performance. Lastly, we propose several advancements on Sip call signaling to improve the IMS Packet Switched call setup times.

Next generation heterogeneous wireless networks are expected to interwork with ip-based infrastructures. The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is an open, standard based solution that merges the Internet with Third Generation (3G) cellular networks. Attainment of a unified logical database is one of the key aspects that promote deployment of IMS. Home Subscriber Server (HSS) as an evolved version of Home Location Register (HLR) is one of the key components of IMS. In deploying HSS as a central repository database, in a fully overlapped heterogeneous network setting, changes of access mode are very frequent and conveying this information to HSS imposes excessive signaling load and delay. In our proposed scheme we introduce an Interface Agent (IA) for each location area that that caches the location and information about the access mode through which a user can be reached. This method results in significant amount of signaling cost savings, hence a better delay performance.

Fair exchange and customerpsilas anonymity are the two important properties of any electronic commerce protocol. However most of the existing protocols have missed this focus and a few have any one of this but not both. This paper proposes a secure and efficient electronic commerce protocol that ensures fair exchange and customerpsilas anonymity for any digital transaction over the public network. The new protocol is designed in such a way that it covers all the transaction process starting from negotiation and registration, withdrawal and transfer of electronic cash, purchase, and arbitration phase. The proposed protocol is superior to the related previous protocols in the area of electronic cash management, key management, communication round, and computational cost.

We have designed a smart middleware and are working on implementing and deploying it as a landmark architectural piece run by nodes of the Future Internet. The middleware we propose aims as a main goal at making applications and services fully network-aware in the sense that they utilize network resources and tune their own demands based on what the underlying networks can offer. On the other hand, the smart middleware makes networks service aware in the sense that networks also adapt their configuration to service demands. Challenges of the Future Internet such as scalability, increased interoperability, and smart collaboration between engines are addressed by our middleware. Focusing on 3GPP networks including ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) networks, this paper presents the architectural design of our middleware and shows in two showcases how and why it is capable of addressing future challenges. Scenarios such as service and network-aware coordinated load balancing and ldquoalways-best-connectedrdquo as a service verify the merits of our smart middleware design.
