Convergence of the emerging ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) includes unlicensed, nondedicated and nondeterministic, hence uncontrollable, computer access networks for ip multimedia services. It enables provision of resource demanding real-time services and multimedia communication raising new end-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS) challenges, for which quality adaptation using resource management is proposed as a solution in this paper. This is an integrated solution taking both IMS and computer access networks into account as well as the two end-devices and the application servers (AS) involved in communication. The best user experience is targeted under real-time variation of available network (e.g. bandwidth, buffer space) and end-device (e.g. battery, CPU, memory, storage) resources throughout a session. The multimedia content is dynamically adapted to fit the resource availability variations, achieving maximum system (i.e. network and end-devices) resource utilization and enhanced QoS. The resource availability update signalling is carried over Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) during the session. This is work in progress. © 2007 IEEE.

Advanced feature servers are at the core of enterprise ip telephony, offering traditional services, such as call hold, voicemail and find-me-follow-me. These feature servers have begun to be deployed as IMS Application Servers to support both in-house (premises based) or hosted service (ip Centrex) offerings. At the same time, there exist applications that are external to IMS that can provide a richer communications experience, when integrated. The application layer in IMS allows these external applications to be blended with the advanced telephony features. An example of this is the use of Microsoft Office Communicator for call control. Several current implementations integrate this feature through a back-end proprietary interface to specific feature servers. We present an architecture for generalizing this integration with a CSTA/IMS gateway that can interact with any IMS feature server.

Composing learning material for online education and ensuring quality of delivery (low latency and high bandwidth) is a challenge to researchers in e-learning. The problem is compounded when the computing platforms are heterogeneous. Besides, e-learning as an application presents a highly fluctuating load to the underlying ip multimedia subsystem. Viewed in this light, it appears that an e-learning system with inherent abilities to integrate various multimedia elements that can adapt its output to suit network parameters is the need of the hour . In this paper, we propose a new architecture for the e-learning application & called ACCS & Adaptive Content Composition System & which is capable of composing a knowledge molecule (composed of different media elements) that can parametrically relate to the underlying ip multimedia subsystem (IMS), for ensuring a desired QoS. The ACCS architecture has two dominant layers above the IMS; viz., knowledge management sub-layer and network services adaptation sub-layer. We study the performance of ACCS with synthetic workloads under controlled conditions using a network test-bed, called GeNIe.

ipTV and video on demand (VoD) services are becoming means for traditional service providers to fight back against the competition from cable companies. Many of the large service providers are deploying networks and delivery infrastructure to deliver ipTV and VoD on ip based networks. At the same time, they are looking at the possibility of migrating their traditional PSTN networks towards IMS. Given that the two events happening almost at the same time, service providers will need to consider the possibility that ipTV+VoD services could be delivered over IMS network to prevent ipTV+VoD as another service capability of an IMS network. This paper proposes an architecture for deploying ipTV & VoD as services on an IMS based network. It analyzes the short-comings in the IMS specifications and steps taken by standards bodies to address them.

Passive ip devices like Sip based surveillance camera, need to be secured due to the private information that it may transmit. This paper proposes an architecture to secure the information that the device could access in peer-to-peer overlay networks. This architecture provides the security mechanism for authentication, authorization and audit (AAA). It combines the security features of Authentication Servers with Sip architecture to provide AAA Service to registered users needing access to passive ip devices. Dynamic password for authenticating the access of the passive devices managed by the authentication server could be also applied to enhance the security features of devices.

3G wireless networks aim at supporting real-time multimedia applications such as multimedia conferencing. The 3rd Partnership Project (3GPP) has designed ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) as the solution to provide rich multimedia communication for the Next Generation Networks (NGN). Based on IETF standards such as ip, Sip and SDP protocols, it allows convergence of ip multimedia communications though existing ip networks. Interest in such communications is expected to grow over wireless network. To guarantee real-time and reliable multimedia transfer, there is a need to analyze multimedia traffic deployed over real 3G networks to help network operators identifying the required 3G IMS network capacity. Therefore, we propose to test real-time multimedia Sip communications through HSDPA network using G711 voice and H263 video codecs with different video frame rates. In this paper, we focus on media mean delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth use measurements with and without mobility.

Currently the users register to services and once the registration is successful; the service starts running for the user. The users have no option to switch between services based on their need. Deregistering is not the preferred option when users want to temporarily stop the service execution or if they want to switch over to another service from the existing one. Usually in Sip based IMS networks, the IMS Application Server hosts the services and the serving proxy i.e. the S-CSCF triggers the required service for a user based on "Initial Filter Criteria (iFC) or Shared filter criteria (SiFC)".

Cell broadband engine (CBE) is a multi-core processor jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM. The multi-SPE architecture makes it powerful for streaming media processing, such as voice over ip application. In this paper, a CBE based ip media server (IMS) architecture is proposed and the workloads of ITU-T G.723.1 and GSM-AMR encoder on CBE are analyzed with some preliminary optimization result from both CBE simulator and real CBE hardware. Branch instruction reduction, data level parallelism (SIMD), instruction level parallelism and aligned SPU local store access techniques are applied in our single precision floating-point based reference software optimization on Cell. The performance we have achieved demonstrates the Cell competence for computation intensity applications in telecom industry.

In current 3GPP specifications initial filter criteria (iFC) and also the Shared iFC (SiFC) optimization (optional in the specs) are defined as part of the user service profile; This is linked to the user in order to allow forwarding of the initial received request to the proper Application Server (AS) running the required service logic. That approach considers that all service logic is performed at the AS and then the only defined action for the iFC (when trigger conditions are met) is to forward the request to the AS. The specifications however allow for additional ldquocall control logicrdquo at the S-CSCF that is outside the scope of the iFC controls. This paper presents a solution consisting of extensions to the iFCs schema. This can be used as a way to enable such call control logic the S-CSCF. If SiFC are used, the only impacted network element (NE) would be the S-CSCF.

In this paper, an approach with extended cocoons to detect and resolve the feature interaction induced by the centralized multi-party service is proposed, hereinafter referred to as the ECOMPS. The ECOMPS is built based on the approach presented in (Kolberg and Magill, 2007) which manages the feature interaction between call control services within a single session; therefore, the good characters are inherited. The ECOMPS introduces a cocoon surrounding the centralized multi-party service, called COMPS, to modify the original Sip request message to include the information about participants in the multi-party service; in addition, the cocoon for call control services in (Kolberg and Magill) is extended, called COCCS, to describe the servicepsilas execution on the modified request message. Moreover, the ECOMPS can be applied to the service capability interaction manager (SCIM) in 3GPP ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) to detect the feature interaction between Sip application servers where call control services are deployed on, even with the centralized multi-party service involved in the communication. The ECOMPS is also illustrated by taking the multi-party conferencing service as an example. The feature interaction caused by the centralized multi-party service can be detected and resolved with the ECOMPS.
