Enabling next generation network to support multimedia streaming services across heterogeneous fixed and mobile networks challenges the developers to define a unified triple play framework solution. The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) defined by the 3rd generation partnership projects (3GPP and 3GPP2) represents today a basis framework for a service delivery platform (SDP) for providing triple play services. Several approaches have already been introduced struggling with the need for an integrated solution based on the IMS core or the development of a separated subsystem. The Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has launched the "Open IMS Playground" in July 2004 as part of the German 3G beyond national testbed. The IMS Playground has been extended recently as an open environment gathering all major IMS core components, and triple play toolkit originating from own developments as well as major industry players, which can be used by academic and industrial partners for early prototyping of new triple play services, related components, protocols, and applications. This paper introduces the relevant technologies and provides an overview of the "open NGN/triple play toolkit and testbed @ FOKUS".

The second generation of advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) based on PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) specification has evolved to a live deployment phase. Products from world renowned telecom vendors in the wireless (CDMA, GSM, and UMTS), IMS, circuit core and packet core to build scalable carrier grade ip and converged networks are being deployed. These networks provide ip telecommunication, ip multimedia communication, scalable web collaboration, unified communication as well as triple and quadruple play services. This paper analyzes the emergence of ATCA compliant hardware and software platform from a global leader in telecommunication. The paper discusses the ease of building applications using the high speed interconnect technology, redundancy capability, multi-switching fabric usage, high availability carrier grade middleware and simplified network management for next generation networks. The CAPEX and OPEX benefits to service providers of using ATCA are discussed.

This paper looks at the development of the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) from the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) and how it has introduced added security and extensions to the basic Sip standard to enable voice, data and media services. The paper identifies the difficulties encountered in enabling interworking with non-IMS clients and then investigates the solutions proposed by the 3GPP including "early IMS". The proposals by ETSI TISPAN on interworking are examined and compared with those by the 3GPP as well as their different security architectures. The paper then looks at the issue of connecting users with legacy devices in the home network and proposes the Sip2IMS Gateway as a solution for a number of scenarios. The design and implementation and validation of these solutions on the IMS test bed at Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin and the University of Limerick are presented and a short comparison with similar work is made. Finally, plans for future work are described.

In this paper, we study Web services methods and approaches to enable real-time communication services over ip. This approach extends Web services methodologies from service integration to a service-oriented approach for communication. In particular, we describe the generic Web service based application session management, WS-Session, the two-way full duplex Web service interaction framework, and most importantly, the development of Web service initiation protocol (Wip) which is a full featured Web service and SOA based communication framework for multimedia and voice communication over ip. We show that Wip provides a service oriented architecture which can be extended seamlessly from a P2P endpoint to an endpoint with advanced call control and switching capabilities typically requiring the assistance of a dedicated PBX. A prototype of Wip system is fully developed. Architectural design and system implementation of Web service based communication endpoints are studied and applied to realize service-oriented communication over ip. Advances of Wip indicate the beginning of a full Web service and SOA based communication paradigm that can reshape the converged communication over ip.

The modern applications to be implemented in portable devices usually contain complex dynamic data structures. The selection of the dynamic data type (DDT) combination of the application affects the performance and the energy consumption of the memory subsystem. Therefore, a systematic exploration that assists the designer to select the optimal data structure implementation for each application given the design constraints is needed. This optimization process is called DDT exploration and is an important part of the tools used to perform efficient Dynamic Memory Management and optimal memory assignment and memory access scheduling. In this paper, we introduce a DDT exploration methodology based on a new DDT Library tool. Using the new DDT Library, the exploration methodology is enchanted and can be applied in a wide range of application domains.

As telecom carriers migrate their networks to a common ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) based infrastructure, they are confronted with another disruptive change in their business model from the Internet world - Web 2.0. Web 2.0 allows users to generate and collaborate content amongst themselves. Traditionally, telecom carriers, along with their partner content providers, have been the only producers of content in their network for the users. However, today (as we are seeing in the Internet world) users would like to share their content (photos, files, music, and video) with their friends and colleagues. A key attribute in this sharing model is the role of context. Context can be defined with attributes such as presence and location. In order to introduce this model in their networks, it is important for telecom carriers to ensure that they have a proper architecture framework to allow the sharing of content amongst users, keeping context in mind. This paper focuses on the SOA based services model that will allow for the transformation of telecom service providers into a digital media centric content business in a Web 2.0 environment. Based on our industry implementations, we will describe the hierarchy of content services in a layered model of foundational and composite services. This will form our basis for a context aware content services infrastructure.

In recent years many multimedia services, such as voice over ip and videoconferencing, have been developed and applied popularly over the Internet. These multimedia services become key applications in home networks, but the bandwidth requirements for these multimedia services grow up rapidly. Thus how to provide a certain degree of Quality of Services (QoS) for the multimedia applications in edge routers is an important issue. The framework of differentiated services (DiffServ) is able to provide QoS by means of packet classifications, flow aggregation and scheduling mechanisms. In the paper a DiffServ edge router is implemented on the Intel IXP425 network processor platform. Network processors are emerging as a programmable alternative to the traditional ASIC-based solutions in scaling up the user-plane processing of network services. The performance of the implemented DiffServ edge router is evaluated by experiments. Experimental results demonstrate the validation of the implemented system.

With more and more multimedia applications on the Internet, such as ipTV, bandwidth becomes a vital bottleneck for the booming of large scale Internet based multimedia applications. Network coding is recently proposed to take advantage to use network bandwidth efficiently. In this paper, we focus on massive multimedia data, e.g. ipTV programs, transportation in peer-to-peer networks with network coding. By through study of networking coding, we pointed out that the prerequisites of bandwidth saving of network coding are: I) one information source with a number of concurrent receivers, or 2) information pieces cached at intermediate nodes. We further proof that network coding can not gain bandwidth saving at immediate connections to a receiver end; As a result, we propose a novel model for ipTV data transportation in unstructured peer-to-peer networks with network coding. Our preliminary simulations show that the proposed architecture works very well.
