The SAMRT (Server for multimedia applications for Residence communiTy) system is a special-purpose server developed by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) which is designed for efficient streaming service over high speed networks. The server has maximum four 2-Gbps network cards and each of those network cards have some disks which store multimedia contents and can be accessed only through the specific network card. In this paper, we are proposing an efficient system including hardware and software in terms of the design concept and system architecture for the multimedia streaming service. We also present the implementation result for the system and performance comparison with other systems. Performance of our system is better than other systems. Specially, our system can do streaming service to more users and CPU overhead is less than other systems.

The paper presents a model for Quality of Service (QoS) signaling for complex multimedia services in the next generation network (NGN), from establishing necessary QoS support at session setup, to further QoS modifications in response to dynamic changes during the session. The model aims to maximize user perceived quality, while taking into account constraints imposed by the user, network, and service itself. While the model is independent of the particular service and network scenario, we take a Networked Virtual Reality (NVR) service as a fairly good representative of intricate media-rich services in the NGN. We further propose a mapping onto the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS), as the most prominent NGN-driven part of the current Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) architecture;and identify its possible functional enhancements for supporting services such as NVR. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The success of Internet allows us to access remote data by using the TCP/ip protocol suite. However, bandwidth and delay have a crucial impact on the quality of a video stream delivered over ip connection. So Causal Ordered Grid architecture is proposed to provide a novel transport protocol to the time-sensitive and ordering-critical video applications. But it indicates that the value of Delta is a system parameter and could not be changed in running time. In fact, the fixed Delta value could not reflect the current network status and different video frame types and sometimes result in poor video quality. We propose an adaptive intelligent Delta-causal ordering protocol based on fuzzy neural network to real-time dynamically choose Delta value according to the current network conditions and delivering video frame types. Experimental results show our algorithms achieve good tradeoff between reliability and real-time performance than fixed Delta value algorithm.

In this paper, a flexible middleware system for omni-directional video transmission for various teleconferencing applications is introduced. The omni-directional image has more advantages in that it provides a wider view than a single directional camera and able to flexible realize TV conferencing even between remotely separated small rooms. In this paper, we describe system architecture and functions of the middleware for high-definition omni-directional image control and effective video transmission system using DV and HDV (1080i format)[4]. The MidField system which we have developed so far is used for video stream transmission over ipv4/ipv6 networks. The prototype system of a TV conference is constructed to evaluate our suggested high-definition omni-directional middleware. Through the functional and performance evaluation of the prototyped system, we could verify the usefulness of our proposed system. © 2006 by Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School. The 3GPP ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) is currently expected to provide the basic architecture framework for the Next Generation Network which will bridge the traditional divide between circuit-switched and packet-switched networks and consolidate both sides into one single network for all services. Therefore, the imminent commercial roll-out of IMS will have immense impact on the whole way future mobile business applications are designed, developed and deployed. This paper presents a survey about the application-oriented research project CAMPARI (Configuration, architecture, Migration, Performance Analysis and Requirements of 3G IMS) which aims at investigating a "minimal-optimal" IMS configuration with respect to architecture and Quality-of-Service aspects. After a brief survey of the IMS core components, we introduce our OpenSER-based IMS prototype implementation and pre-sent the "IMS in a bottle" approach. Based on our practical experiences with this testbed system, we finally discuss important current and future challenges including migration, interworking, charging, identity management, security, and regulatory aspects.

This paper analyzes the signaling efficiency for multimedia call (session) establishment in all-ip wireless networking infrastructures based on the Internet multimedia subsystem (IMS) standard framework and CDMA2000 Evolution Data Only Rev. A (EV-DOrA) standard for wireless link transmission. We present a comprehensive, bottom up analysis of signaling delay for setting up multimedia sessions and we evaluate system architecture alternatives to reduce it. Call setup time is particularly critical for interactive applications, such as gaming, push-to-X and Voice over ip (Voip), where user experience of time that takes to start or join a session directly translates in user perception of service quality. Our analysis takes into account a large set of system design parameters across all layers, ranging from radio link properties to IMS processing and specific characteristics of the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip). For an example signaling flow between two mobile users, we derive an important set of numerical results for call set up time under various IMS design scenarios that consider effects of Sip compression efficiency, choice of transport protocols (TCP, UDP) and radio link quality. Based on the results obtained, we propose and discuss new methods to improve the signaling efficiency and to reduce the call setup time.

As demand for communication connectivity "anytime, anywhere, and any way" increases, heterogeneous network design trend will grow faster supporting seamless integration of satellite/wired and wireless networks. Satellite communication plays a significant role in supporting next generation ip-based communication network through heterogeneous infrastructure for broadband and mobile applications. To deploy state-of-the-art satellite technologies and supporting media rich applications provisioning an end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and mobility must be addressed. Study of satellite communications constraints like attenuation, propagation delays, fading is very critical to support user service level agreements. Adaptive resource management, advanced modulation and coding techniques and congestion control algorithms must be developed. Transport protocols need to address the impact on end-to-end system performance due to lower layer protocols and their interaction. End-to-end QoS models and cross-layer protocol optimization must be investigated. In this paper we propose an end-to-end QoS protocol model emphasizing cross-layer optimization. In particular, we consider joint optimization of TCP and lower layer in geostationary network architecture assuming transport protocol enhancements such as TCP Reno, SACK, Westwood, and Hybla. At the physical layer modulations and coding considered include BPSK and QPSK;and Convolution Coder/Viterbi decoder. Our simulation results demonstrate that the interaction/adaptation at the physical layer improve the TCP goodput at the transport layer. Future research includes impact analysis of multimedia applications performance due to lower layer protocol selections. Grids are problem solving environments that use various resources, such as processing power and storage areas connected on a wide area network. We analyse and compare some network architecture for grids in the perspective to deploy on the Internet services to access those resources. The access to those resources should benefit from a guaranteed network quality of service. We propose an architecture to deliver services to access resources on a public network, using next generation network architecture.
