This paper presents a layered framework for 3D-TV applications, combining multiview and depth-image based approaches in a scalable fashion. To solve the problem of missing data due to disocclusions, we add specific layers for coded occlusion data and the edge-mask information for high-quality 3D rendering of key objects in the scene. We show how the same framework can be extended towards FTV applications by jointly addressing simulcast and multicast transmission. By adopting a distributed delivery architecture, new interesting properties can be realized such as shared processing for the creation and streaming of virtual viewpoints

Service-oriented communication (SOC) is a new development in the industry to enable communication through Web services and SOA. SOC is to make communication as service and provide a service-oriented architecture to integrate communication in business applications. Recent advances of Web service and SOA have made it possible for a full Web service and SOA based communication paradigm over ip. This paper is an overview of the recent development in this area with a focus on key technologies that can be applied to Web service enablement of communication. In particular, we discuss the generic Web service based application session management based on WS-session, the two-way full duplex Web service interaction framework, and the development of Web service initiation protocol (Wip). Wip is a full Web service and SOA based communication protocol for multimedia and voice communication over ip. The generic Web service approach of Wip overcomes many limitations which would be otherwise difficult to achieve in non-Web service based communication methods used today. In addition, we discuss the service composition and orchestration framework based on WS-BPEL, and illustrate the application of this approach through some real use cases

When a mobile node roams to another network/subnet, new resource reservation has to be made between the sender and receiver. If enough resources are not available, the quality of service may be disrupted and the connection may fail. If resources are reserved indiscriminately, then most of them would be unused and performance degradation would be the result. We would like to propose a pre-authenticated and adaptive micro-mobility management architecture in ip networks. We use pre-authentication to hasten the handoff process. Also the mobility predictor block used will help in reserving the resources aptly. The packets are generally classified based on the ToS field in ipv4 (or traffic class and the flow label fields in ipv6). Here we focus more on the special case of wireless local area networks (WLANs) installation within a building or in a restricted campus. In this paper, we propose a fast and adaptive ip micro mobility management scheme with mobility prediction for WLAN nodes. We also present some basic simulation on WLAN mobile node roaming

Even though numerous proposals have been made for mobility management schemes in heterogeneous wireless ip networks, no single solution has emerged that is capable of supporting seamless and low latency handovers required to satisfy the stringent delay requirements of real-time multimedia applications. In this paper, we present a location-based mobility management architecture for realtime applications in a heterogeneous network environment. Handover latency is minimised by integrating optimised application layer mobility management signalling using the session initiation protocol (Sip) with location-based information of nearby access points (APs). A newly defined access point location protocol (APLP) is used to disseminate geospatial information and network parameters associated with various APs to location-aware mobile devices that use this information to construct a virtual map of the APs. An intelligent decision engine (DE) implemented in the mobile node (MN) combines the information provided by APLP with knowledge of the user's mobility pattern and policy preferences to anticipate handovers

A new UPnP architecture for distributed video voice over ip

In this paper we present a novel approach to video telephony where we are able to exploit the benefits of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol: self-configuration, discovery and control of available devices connected to the network. At the time being, UPnP does not deal with Video Voice over ip (VVoip) applications. Integrating a signaling protocol like the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) with UPnP allows interaction between the videophone and other UPnP compliant devices, like a TV set or a media server. This interaction, for example, makes it feasible to display the caller's image on the television screen, thus allowing the user to relax on the sofa and naturally converse. Another interesting scenario is the one where the user sends to the conversation partner a set of still pictures or short video clips acquired from a UPnP media server already available in the home premises. An advantage of this distributed approach is its cost effectiveness, since it allows to reuse existing UPnP devices also in the context of video telephony. The integration between Sip and UPnP has been achieved introducing a new UPnP device, the VVoip device, which is a Sip User Agent able to interoperate with standard UPnP MediaServers and Medi-aRenderers. ip-based multimedia creation and consumption is becoming available on an increasing spectrum of devices ranging from low-powered portable devices like cell phones and PDA's to high powered static devices like desktops PCs and ipTVs. High-speed wireless and wire-line network access is becoming widespread. multimedia services like ipTV, Video-on-demand and Video-conferencing are becoming main stream. These developments have paved the way for creating innovative concepts like session mobility for multimedia applications. Session mobility enables seamless transfer of an on-going multimedia session between different devices based on user preferences. We examine the motivations and use cases for session mobility. In this paper we evaluate architectural design constraints and propose architectural solutions for session mobility. We evaluate current session mobility mechanisms and propose requirements for new mechanisms.

The success of Internet allows us to access remote data by using the TCP/ip protocol suite. However, bandwidth and delay have a crucial impact on the quality of a video stream delivered over ip connection. So causal ordered grid architecture is proposed to provide a novel transport protocol to the time-sensitive and ordering-critical video applications. But it indicates that the value of Delta is a system parameter and could not be changed in running time. In fact, the fixed Delta value could not reflect the current network status and different video frame types and sometimes result in poor video quality. We propose an adaptive intelligent Delta-causal ordering protocol based on fuzzy neural network to real-time dynamically choose Delta value according to the current network conditions and delivering video frame types. Experimental results show our algorithms achieve good tradeoff between reliability and real-time performance than fixed Delta value algorithm

Matrix transposition is an important kernel used in many applications. Even though its optimization has been the subject of many studies, an optimization procedure that targets the characteristics of current processor architectures has not been developed. In this paper, we develop an integrated optimization framework that addresses a number of issues, including tiling for the memory hierarchy, effective handling of memory misalignment, utilizing memory subsystem characteristics, and the exploitation of the parallelism provided by the vector instruction sets in current processors. A judicious combination of analytical and empirical approaches is used to determine the most appropriate optimizations. The absence of problem information until execution time is handled by generating multiple versions of the code — the best version is chosen at runtime, with assistance from minimal-overhead inspectors. The approach highlights aspects of empirical optimization that are important for similar computations with little temporal reuse. Experimental results on PowerPC G5 and Intel Pentium 4 demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed framework.

Structured peer-to-peer overlay network is an efficient solution for querying and retrieving resources spread between the peers. Unfortunately, key based routing of Distributed Hash Tables is simple when keys are known in advance, and at the service level this connot be always assumed. In this paper1, we present DHTeach, an e-learning application built on a totally distributed overlay network, where the problem of key definition is solved using an ad hoc description language. Moreover, DHTeach lays on a multicast application layer that organizes peers in order to make them able to receive the multimedia stream concurrently from a set of partners participating the class. The overall architecture is fully integrated and interoperable.

Third generation (3G) mobile cellular systems are available for higher capacity than previous generations deployed in many countries around the world. Design and developments beyond 3G are aiming not only for higher capacity in terms of number of users but also for higher data rate applications. The issue becomes the agenda of debate for both academia and industry around the world. This panel, which consists of international researchers from both industry and academia, will discuss various important issues related to 3G and beyond. Fourth Generation (4G) wireless communications systems have been proposed because of its difficulty of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies to achieve higher data rates and therefore, satisfy continuously ever increasing demand for data rates and bandwidth to meet multi-media user's requirements. With ever increasing in data rates, the output power of the air-interface must be increased and or the size of the cell has to be decreased to accommodate higher rates. These implementations introduce difficulties. 4G communications networks may require distributed architecture, End-to-End Internet Protocol (ip), and peer-to-peer networking. Coverage and Capacity could be adaptive and dynamically accommodate changes in user's patterns. Users could move automatically away from the congested routes to allow network to dynamically and automatically self-balance itself. Panel discussion also addresses the issues of security in the mobile and wireless ip. ip is dominating the next generation mobile and wireless technologies. Its security is becoming a major concern.
