In this paper we present a novel approach to video telephony where we are able to exploit the benefits of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol: self-configuration, discovery and control of available devices connected to the network. At the time being, UPnP does not deal with Video Voice over ip (VVoip) applications. Integrating a signaling protocol like the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) with UPnP allows interaction between the videophone and other UPnP compliant devices, like a TV set or a media server. This interaction, for example, makes it feasible to display the caller's image on the television screen, thus allowing the user to relax on the sofa and naturally converse. Another interesting scenario is the one where the user sends to the conversation partner a set of still pictures or short video clips acquired from a UPnP media server already available in the home premises. An advantage of this distributed approach is its cost effectiveness, since it allows to reuse existing UPnP devices also in the context of video telephony. The integration between Sip and UPnP has been achieved introducing a new UPnP device, the VVoip device, which is a Sip User Agent able to interoperate with standard UPnP MediaServers and Medi-aRenderers.

The increasing heterogeneity of end-user terminals as well as network access technologies leads to a demand to deliver media content adapted for possibly multiple and different end-user devices. Media adaptation performed on the server side has shown its limitations and on demand network side media adaptation, performed transparently for users and content providers emerges as a promising approach. Based on this concept, the proposed Smart multimedia Routing and Transport (SMART) architecture, a novel overlay network solution designed within the Ambient Network project, will enable the transparent integration of advanced media processing modules into end-to-end media delivery paths. The required media processing modules need to be selected based on end-users requirements as well as Quality of Service (QoS) constraints defined by service providers. In this paper we propose a distributed hash table (DHT) based approach to support the selection and instantiation of Media Processing Modules to realise a Service Specific Overlay Network (SSON) for a network side media processing and adaptation.

multimediaapplications such as video and image processing are computation intensive applications. For these applications the bit-width of data and operations is different all over the application. Generating optimized architectures is not an obvious task since it requires a deep bit-width analysis in order to properly size hardware resources. Furthermore implementing several application profiles onto the same chip makes it possible to avoid over-sized architectures or chip reconfiguration. In this paper we propose a design methodology based on high-level synthesis which takes into account multiple bit-width standards in order to generate area and power optimized architectures for embedded devices. First results demonstrate the interest of the approach.

One of the benefits of the evolution of the third generation mobile systems such as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) toward the all-ip network architecture is to provide functionalities to support real-time multimedia services. Simple and efficient multimedia session handling characteristics of the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip), candidates it by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) for the signalling protocol of ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) of UMTS. An important issue in IMS is the fact that service control procedures of the subscribers are performed in the home network. In this paper we review the Sip-based service registration and session establishment procedures in IMS and we study the challenges for providing a Sip-based cooperative mechanism between network operators of different subscribers in IMS in order to prevent extending of service control procedures of roamers to home network and to optimize the session establishment procedure by performing service control procedures of roamers in the visited network.
In this paper we propose a novel architecture for converged multimedia Sip (Session Initiation Protocol) services in wireline and 3G networks. The work on the future evolution of 3G systems is taking momentum with ong...

Satellite access networks (SAN) are expected to play a decisive role in bridging the digital divide through providing broadband access to multimedia services in geographical area where terrestrial access networks like cable or ADSL cannot be deployed. SANs currently lack a clear QoS architecture in order to fit seamlessly into the end-to-end NGN framework. Several architectures mixing ip QoS layer mechanisms with specific satellite MAC dynamic allocation schemes are already designed. However, very few multimediaapplications can actually benefit from these architectures since most of them are not QoS aware. This work presents a Sip based multimedia signaling architecture where existing Sipapplications can beneficiate from a QoS enabled ip network without undergoing any adjustments or modifications. In addition to that, the realization of the proposed solution is also described along with its performance evaluation tests and their results on an emulated satellite platform, providing DiffServ services, which was implemented during the European IST SATip6 project.

3GPP ipmultimediasubsystem (IMS) provides ip-based session control capabilities based on the Sip protocol. Although full support to 3GPP TS 33.203 security features is preferred from a security perspective, it is acknowledged that early IMS implementations exists which do not support these features. 3GPP TR 33.978 define some security mechanisms to protect early IMS, but there are still some security issues, e.g. the signaling security, roaming security, NAT and interworking, which need to be resolved in the deployment of early IMS. This paper presents a new deployment of early IMS which focus on the security from the access network to the core network.

This paper proposes a generic architecture and protocol for adaptive distribution of multimedia content within collaborative conferencing sessions, supplying applications like presentation sharing, co-browsing, or application sharing with extensive content. applications building upon it are able to use efficient decoupled content delivery with adaptation in a tightly-coupled environment while integrated interaction features like annotations, telepointer, and chat are still available. Building blocks from content networking research are combined with concepts of ip conferencing. A system for presentation sharing and photo sharing was implemented as a proof of concept.
