Advances in multimedia technologies and development of overlay networks foster the opportunity for creating new value-added services over the current Internet. In this paper, we propose a new service network architecture that supports multiparty multimedia conferencing applications, characteristics of which include multi-channel, high bandwidth and low delay tolerance. The new service network architecture is built upon an array of service nodes called multiparty processing centers (MPCs). The MPCs constitute a service overlay network, serving as the infrastructure for multiparty conferencing, and are responsible for conferencing setup, media delivery and QoS provisioning. In this paper, we focus on the bandwidth allocation problem in the proposed service network. The bandwidth allocation problem determines the bandwidth demand for virtual links among the MPCs. multimedia traffic is modeled as M/G/∞ input processes and divided into several classes, with the constraint that the aggregate effective bandwidth is within the link capacity times a prescribed utilization threshold.

In this paper, we present an approach of integrating Sip (Session Initiation Protocol) in converged multimodal/multimedia communication services. An extensible VoipTeleserver for Voip in Sip environment is described. It is based on the concept of dialogue system and Web convergence that separates the channel dependent media resources from the application dependent service creation and hosting environment. It supports XML based service applications for multiple channels including voice, DTMF, IM and chat over ip. The loosely coupled open architecture in our approach is highly extensible. We describe the concept and structure of VoipTeleServer used in our approach in detail, which interfaces to the Voip world through Sip signaling and works as a broker between the Voip Sip environment and MTip to deliver converged communication services. A prototype of VoipTeleServer was implemented, and services and applications based on Sip and MTip convergence are constructed. Special attention is given to the adverse effect of delay, jitter and packet loss for voice portal services over ip. In particular, case studies of DTMF service in voice portal under adverse channel conditions are performed. The compounding effects of multiple channel impairments to DTMF in voice portal services over ip are characterized. The potential high error rate of the DTMF service indicates that the data redundancy method as proposed in RFC 2198 is needed for DTMF in order to achieve reliable voice portal services over ip.

Urban traffic control systems have based their technological infrastructure both on advanced analogical close-circuit television systems (TVCC) and point-to-point links, providing low-scalable and very expensive systems. The main goal of an urban traffic monitoring system is to capture, send, play and distribute video information from the streets of a certain city. Current digitalization process of video networks, and the research carried out in the field of streaming media, has led vendors to present proprietary hardware and software solutions resulting in a strong dependency among their customers. The existence of open standards for video encoding and protocols for streaming media transmission over ip networks has led us to propose this system. The work presents an open urban traffic control system which bases its design on COTS philosophy for hardware and software, as well as open source and standardized protocols. The proposed system is a suitable solution in terms of scalability, cost, interoperability and performance for traffic control systems. Futhermore, its architecture can be easily adapted to other video applications and tools.

This document provides an overview of the impact of NATs and Firewalls on Internet applications and then describes state-of-the-art solutions and current research initiatives that allow applications to work in the presence of NATs and Firewalls. Firewalls and Network Address Translators are inevitable in modern Internet as they play a very important role in protecting and managing network resources but these middleboxes are obstacles for multimedia traffic that use dynamic ephemeral ports. There is a need for a signaling protocol, which can request a change of policy rules in a firewall or creation of a binding in the NAT. To develop a protocol or to design a network architecture, it is necessary to understand the implication of middleboxes such as NATs and Firewalls with respect to the deployment of services like Voice over ip. Different solutions for middlebox traversal have been developed over the past years with different constraints and limitations. This document compares these approaches against common criteria.
