In order to provide QoS-guaranteed realtime multimedia services on ip-based transport network, tightly coupled interactions of session & connection management and CAC (connection admission control) is essential. Also, for efficient QoS-guaranteed DiffServ provisioning across multiple AS domain networks, a scalable transit networking scheme must be provided so as to configure per-class-type QoS-guaranteed packet processing and to provide scalable connection admission control (CAC). In this paper, we propose a functional architecture of session & connection management with Sip, RSVP-TE, CAC and QoS-guaranteed virtual networking. We also propose a per-class-type virtual networking scheme for scalable QoS-guaranteed Diff-Serv provisioning across multiple autonomous system (AS) domain networks. The implementations of the proposed distributed session &: connection management functions are based on Web Service architecture and XML/SOAP-based network management. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Emerging Internet Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms are expected to enable wide spread use of real time services such as Voip and videoconferencing. The "best effort" Internet delivery cannot be used for the new multimedia applications. New technologies and new standards are necessary to offer Quality of Service (QoS) for these multimedia applications. Therefore new communication architectures integrate mechanisms allowing guaranteed QoS services as well as high data rate communications. The service level agreement with a mobile Internet user is hard to satisfy, since there may not be enough resources available in some parts of the network the mobile user is moving into. The emerging Internet QoS architectures, differentiated services and integrated services, do not consider user mobility. QoS mechanisms enforce a differentiated sharing of bandwidth among services and users. Thus, there must be mechanisms available to identify traffic flows with different QoS parameters, and to make it possible to charge the users based on requested quality. The integration of fixed and mobile wireless access into ip networks presents a cost effective and efficient way to provide seamless end-to-end connectivity and ubiquitous access in a market where the demand for mobile Internet services has grown rapidly and predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue. This tutorial covers to the issues of QoS provisioning in heterogeneous networks and Internet access over future wireless networks as well as MPLS, DiffServ, IntServ frameworks. It discusses the characteristics of the Internet, mobility and QoS provisioning in wireless and mobile ip networks. This tutorial also covers routing, security, baseline architecture of the internetworking protocols and end to end traffic management issues.

This paper proposes a hierarchical and distributed architecture for a video on demand distribution service. The service has been conceived to distribute video over a digital video network composed of servers interconnected by an ip network. Also, the service was designed to distribute video in a way that is independent of the video format and to interact with different types of clients. The experimental prototype has been tested over the Brazilian National Research Network's (RNP) backbone, as part of the work of the RNP's Digital Video Workgroup, showing the viability of distributing high quality video in environments with restricted bandwidth. © 2005 IEEE.

applications that require real-time interaction among users are gaining importance and widespread use as computer networks become increasingly powerful and ubiquitous. Many such applications impose very stringent requirements on the network;among the applications today widely deployed, videoconferencing is the most demanding. In order for the participants in a videoconference call to interact naturally, the end-to-end delay should be below human perception;even though an objective and unique figure cannot be set, 100 ms is widely recognized as the desired one way delay requirement for interaction. Since the global propagation delay alone can be about 100 ms, the actual end-to-end delay budget available to the system designer (excluding propagation delay) is very limited (e.g., no more than 10 ms). We identify the components of the end-to-end delay in various configurations with the objective of understanding how it can be kept below the desired 10 ms bound. After an overview of the distinctive features of interactive multimedia applications, their requirements on the network are discussed and limited delay and delay variation (jitter) identified as the most demanding requirements. The most common tools for controlling service quality are presented and the two major frameworks for their deployment within ip networks, i.e., Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ), outlined. The tutorial also studies the implications of the architecture of packet switches on delay bounds. Then the tutorial delves into more detail by analyzing the end-to-end delay components of a videoconferencing system step-by-step, through six system configurations obtained by combining three generic network architectures with two video encoding schemes: the transmission of raw video and variable bit rate (VBR) MPEG video encoding over: (i) circuit switching, (ii) synchronous packet switching, and (iii) asynchronous packet switching. The ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) defined by the 3/sup rd/ Generation Partnership Projects (3GPP and 3GPP2) represents today the global Service Delivery Platform (SDP) standard for providing multimedia applications in Next Generation Networks (NGN). It defines an overlay service architecture that merges the paradigms and technologies of the Internet with the cellular and fixed telecommunication worlds. The architecture enables the efficient provision of an open set of potentially highly integrated multimedia services, combining Web browsing, email, instant messaging, presence, Voip, video conferencing, application sharing, telephony, unified messaging, multimedia content delivery, etc., on top of possibly different network technologies. Also interworking with the Internet and legacy networks is supported. As such the IMS enables various business models for providing seamless business and consumer multimedia applications. Knowing that the full potential of the IMS can only be revealed by the early nondiscriminant provision of IMS know how and related technologies to the different market players the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has launched the "Open IMS Playground" in July 2004 as part of the German 3G beyond national testbed. This paper introduces the IMS standard and provides an overview of the "Open IMS playground @ FOKUS".

Microprocessors are increasingly supplemented with reconfigurable logic, such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), in embedded system. Because the reconfigurable architecture provide extremely advantages such as reducing the cost, time and complexity of design, and diminishing the difficulties and improving the integrating of ip components. Here, we presented an efficient multi-tile reconfigurable hardware platform with the coarse-grained floating-point function units for fast multimedia signal processing. We have verified the platform by an example of mapping an audio encoder on the ARM Integrator, and experimental results show that the average speedup is 3.316 compared with the software-only approach.

One of the benefits of the evolution of the third generation mobile systemss such as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) toward the all-ip network architecture is to provide functionalities to support real-time multimedia services. Simple and efficient multimedia session handling characteristics of the Session Initiation Protocol (Sip), candidates it by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) for the signalling protocol of ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) of UMTS. An important issue in IMS is the fact that service control procedures of the subscribers are performed in the home network. In this paper we review the Sip-based service registration and session establishment procedures in IMS and we study the challenges for providing a Sip-based cooperative mechanism between network operators of different subscribers in IMS in order to prevent extending of service control procedures of roamers to home network and to optimize the session establishment procedure by performing service control procedures of roamers in the visited network.

In this paper we propose a novel architecture for converged multimedia Sip (session initiation protocol) services in wireline and 3G networks. The work on the future evolution of 3G systems is taking momentum with ongoing research on access to the IMS (ip multimedia subsystem) from any broadband access network. In particular WLAN (wireless local area network) access to the 3G services located in the IMS is being standardized though major points still need to be addressed. Wireline access to 3G services is not yet standardized and no deployable solution exists today. We propose in this paper a new architecture that allows an xDSL (digital subscriber line) access to 3G Sip based services, enabling a new generation of converged fixed/mobile services. This would also allow network operators to mutualise equipments and therefore reduce costs. In this paper, we analyze the high level requirements of this architecture, and we propose to introduce two new functional entities in the xDSL network: a Sip proxy and a border gateway. We study the impact of this new architecture with several transversal requirements: connectivity, QoS and security

The adaptive keyword spotting interaction (AKSI) paradigm presented in this paper is an algorithm for speech command selection in multimodal applications. An architecture implementing AKSI algorithm within ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) services design framework is proposed. This architecture uses a Sip/speech proxy (called multimodal enabler) to extract keywords from client applications downloaded to the mobile station, based on a set of interaction rules. Keywords are emphasized in the presentation, thus providing an indication on the words to use in speech commands. Synchronization of client application and speech interaction manager is achieved by invoking a callback method which triggers presentation's update according to current application context. For unrecognized speech commands, the multimodal enabler uses a TTS module to synthesize speech dialogues/prompts which either ask the user to select a command from a given set, and/or to repeat his command

The specification of the ip multimedia subsystem as a service delivery architecture for next generation networks and the introduction of push to talk (PTT) as an IMS based service moves Voip applications for mobile devices already to the market. PTT has gained a strong following in the US market and is on the verge of spreading globally. The open mobile alliance (OMA) currently specifies PTT as an IMS based service to assure interoperability between different operator domains. Most PTT solution vendors think already about extending PTT with other media types then voice, like video communication, file transfer or service subscription for content push services. Thus, push to multimedia (PTM) does not seem to be that far away from market and is well suited as an enabler to provide IMS applications with advanced multimedia communication functionalities. The department for Next Generation Network Integration (NGNI) at Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has created a PTM application that utilises the IMS architecture. This paper reports about a concept of integrating this PTT/PTM functionality in community based applications to enable already existing groups and communities with new communication features.
