Policy-Based Networking (PBN) is a novel technology that facilitates the management and operation of networks. The paper reports on the application of Policy-Based mechanisms for QoS control in the ip multimedia subsystem (IMS) of the 3/sup rd/ generation UMTS networks. The IMS was introduced in UMTS to provide high quality ip-based multimedia Services in Mobile Networks. After an introduction into PBN technology and a generic network architecture to support end-to-end QoS control, the Policy Decision Function as specified in UMTS is shown. The limitations of the current state of the standardization are explained and extensions to provide Policy-Based end-to-end QoS control in single and multi-operator environments are proposed.

This paper describes an SOC design of a complex, low power and high performance open multimedia application platform (OMAP/sup TM/) for 3G wireless. The design integrates a high performance DSP subsystem based on a low power TMS320C55x DSP and an MPU subsystem based on the ARM9 microprocessor for the optimal combination of high performance with low power consumption. This paper explains the system design and the SoC implementations of the platform.

Wireless communication that provides voice only is not sufficient to support the necessity of user. It is an important feature of future wireless communication to offer this capability through mobile Internet. Mobile ip allows mobile hosts to change their location and reduce the losing probability of data packets in wireless communication networks. However, Mobile ip still have some defects in handoff and route aspects. Therefore, Cellular ip protocol is proposed for routing of ip diagrams to mobile stations and fast handoff control in a limited geographical area. In this paper, a handoff method is proposed to improve Quality of Service and resource switching management to reduce data packet loss for mobile multimedia communication in hierarchical network. In the future, all-ip network and mobile multimedia communication are two important characteristics, so that ip macromobility and micromobility network architecture are combined for data packets transfer. A Soft-handoff method is also presented to improve Quality of Service (QoS) and resource switching management to reduce data packet loss.

We describe the design and implementation of a new transport layer protocol, MMSP (mobile multimedia streaming protocol), that supports bicasting in combination with FEC. MMSP duplicates the packets to be sent through the creation of redundant packets that are Reed-Solomon coded and sends them through two different paths to avoid data loss during handover. We call this mechanism end-to-end robust ip soft handover; it enables mobile terminals to move without any data loss and also improves error resiliency against wireless errors. Thus it is well suited to many common real-time multimedia applications for which retransmission is inappropriate. Our architecture requires no changes to the existing ip networks so it allows for easy deployment. Our performance experiments show that while FEC processing causes some slight delay, such delay is allowable. Bicasting with FEC can provide high quality MPEG-4 transport even under high bit error rates.

A novel method is developed to merge and disband groups in ip multicast while retaining the original setup of their groups. It extends the semantic of joining or leaving a membership from discrete members to group members in ip networks. It has minimal impact on existing multicast trees and does not affect the operations of multicast routing protocols and the Internet group management (IGMP). It incurs lower processing overheads by maintaining the merge status of groups at the network level instead of storing the status at application level. A prototype router and testbed have been implemented successfully to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution and for performance evaluation. The proposed group connection management fills the necessary gap in the existing ip multicast architecture, where the lack of graceful merging and disbanding methods present an obstacle for more creative and complex usage of group applications.

The article describes information network and CATV applications, backbone network structure. Cable is a natural network for carrying high-capacity, bandwidth - intense information. In the age of analogue program signals, cable's capacity was a natural transmission media for broadcast calor TV and high-fidelity stcreo sound programs. In the new digital program signal age, cable's high capacity is a natural network for carrying interactive computer-based. data - intensive multimedia programs. When designing and configuring an ATRI / based broadband CATV (B-CAW), it remains difficult to guarantce the quality ofscrvicc (QoS) for differenl service classes, while still allowing enough ststistical sharing of bandwidth so that the network is efticicntly utilized. This article describes the main challcngcs ofimplementing an end-to-end architecture for delivery of high-quality, ip-based residential TV sewices to residential customers. Faster computational power and higher network bandwidth facilitates Internet applications to improve the way we live, work and play. For video streaming applications, it is a challenge to provide the scalability while maintaining the central manageability and the robustness. In this paper, we propose the centralized peer-to-peer streaming protocol (P2PSP), which features the centralized management, guaranteed perceived quality of service (PQoS), while decentralized the traffic loads. To evaluate the protocol, a layered video coding technique based on 3D discrete cosine transform (DCT) is designed. This codec applies self-organizing tree map (SOTM) to generate cascaded vector quantization codebooks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the centralized P2PSP by comparing the video streaming simulations under the proposed architecture and the client/server architecture.

In this paper we describe a new flexible and universally applicable testbed for Internet-based multimedia applications. Our approach combines the technology of programmable networks with emulated network environments and delivers a virtual programmable testbed (VPT). In this work we show that a VPT is well suited for rapid creation and evaluation of distributed multimedia applications. There are three advantages of our approach compared to previously proposed testbed solutions: first, the software for processing ip datagrams, so called atomic modules, only depends on the programmable platform deployed, making it reusable. Second, loading several atomic modules concurrently allows the easy setup of customized test environments, e.g., channel models. Third, the application being developed can be tested under various network conditions (failures, congestion, etc.) at an early stage. Based on our VPT, distributed multimedia services can be created and evaluated both fast and economically in emulated environments without expensive and complex hardware setup.

In this paper we propose an adaptive handoff algorithm based on the "threshold-with-hysteresis". In general, such handoff algorithms are proposed to improve the handoff decision for a specific user Our algorithm aims to provide effective network utilization for all users. To realize the handoff decision based on the mobile nodes, the agent advertisements include information of the congestion status at the base station in the algorithm. For implementing the algorithm to Mobile ip, we also propose the system architecture with a QoS mechanism. The simulation experiment shows that our proposed algorithm improves the average handoff blocking rate than the previous method in spite of low overhead of our expansion.
