Networked multimediaapplications require stringent real-time QoS guarantees. Successful deployment of such applications closely depends on the performance of the underlying data network. T he characteristics and the QoS requirements of these applications are different from traditional data applications. Hence, prior to deployment it is necessary to evaluate a network from a multimedia perspective. In this paper, we focus on ip Telephony and describe a framework for providing tools for ip Telephony readiness evaluation. This framework can be easily generalized to other multimediaapplications. Our approach injects synthesized voice traffic and measures perceived end-to-end quality. We present a novel idea of relating voice quality metrics to the performance of data network devices. Following the proposed framework, we developed a prototype tool to evaluate a network and to identify problems, if any, prior to ip Telephony deployment. Our tool automatically discovers the topology of a given network, and collects and integrates network device performance and voice quality metrics. We describe the architecture of our tool and provide sample outputs from a network consisting of 129 devices.

3G promises to be an enabler for many new services: videoconferencing, interactive gaming, streaming, etc. Such applications are typically QoS (quality of service) sensitive. This requires new functionality in the UMTS QoS architecture. In 3GPP work on QoS is ongoing; the basic mechanisms are included in UMTS release 5, the more advanced features will be part of UMTS release 6. This document highlights UMTS QoS aspects. The main focus is on UMTS R5 as this release will introduce ipmultimedia services. We clearly make the distinction between 3GPP stable decisions, topics under discussion within 3GPP, and the Alcatel position on the topics.

This paper describes how JPEG2000 still image compression codec will be enabled in the 3G wireless terminals thanks to the efficiency of TMS320C55xx DSP core embedded in the TI OMAP™. OMAP™ H/W architecture will be described, with an emphasis on how still image compression and decompression applications will benefit from this advanced architecture. The paper will also depict the advantages provided by OMAP™s DSP subsystemarchitecture for the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), which is the most computation hungry JPEG2000 kernel. A final chapter will compare bit stream download time and decoding scenarios for compressed QVGA color images.

The support of QoS in the ip network is important to provide real-time applications like voice and video. But, the method in which the network uses to distinguish a real-time application and managing those service is one of the problem in supporting QoS in the ip network. The DiffServ is an efficient method of providing QoS capability without putting much burden to the network. The DiffServ architecture defines services in form of service level agreement (SLA), which is an agreement from the customer and service provider requesting differentiated service for the traffic to/from certain nodes. This paper presents a simple and practical method to provide flow based QoS service dynamically in the ip networks. The QoS controller manages the ip network to provide information for the real-time applications. Thus, the network can use that information to provide the needed QoS treatment for the pertaining flow.

ip header compression techniques have evolved to meet the challenges of cellular networks. The scope has also broadened. Solutions are being developed for voice traffic transport, Sip and protocols such as TCP, which covers the major traffic volumes. All of these standards are currently under development in accordance with the working group charter and IETT process. With these solutions, 2.5G and 3G networks will be a ubiquitous way of obtaining ip connectivity, even for multimediaapplications. The integration of these techniques into the protocol architecture is being done within other standards activities, for example 3GPP. Many aspects of compression schemes (such as BNF grammars for specific content) have been left as implementation decisions, reflecting a principle of the ROHC group: to enable the deployment of sophisticated compression without standardising every aspect of their use.

Recently, there has been much effort in providing information technology into home appliances. Home network may link appliances, sensors, actuators, switches, controllers, and user interfaces to create novel applications and provide an infrastructure for multimedia distribution. However, there are various technologies of the home networking, which makes it difficult to give only one solution. Many developers and standardization organizations considers a home gateway as a good solution. In this paper, we propose a new architecture of a home gateway supporting various home network technologies such as IEEE1394, Bluetooth, LonWorks, wireless LAN, HPNA or implement Bluetooth technology using ip as a test model for our home gateway.

This paper describes the issues and the techniques of enabling multimediaapplications with thin-client/server computing. A prototype of a video communication system based on H.323 family of ITU-T recommendations has been developed to demonstrate the efficient support to multimediaapplications with a terminal server and thin clients in an ip-based thin-client computing environment. With the proposed architecture, a collaborative multi-user audio/video conference system is presented as an illustrative application. The collaborative multiuser audio/video conference system leverages the benefit of sharing common components among multiple conference terminals as well as increases their extensibility and ease of use. As a result, we can attain a balanced architecture that supports both centralized management of application softwares and distributed multimedia processing for I/O devices.

A new ipmultimedia distributed system is presented. The two main functionalities are error-resilience for image and video transmission and storage and distribution of partial information among several servers in order to use different Internet routes. The system is based on a redundant transform called the Mojette transform that projects the original information into different pieces. Our group has developed this transform for the last five years. The main theoretical results of the Mojette transform are recalled for the 2-D and 3-D cases. The transform is then used to break a data volume into several pieces and to transmit or store them with several levels of redundancy such that a receiver is able to reconstruct the original message by a subset of pieces despite erasures. The second main feature is to provide insufficient pieces onto a single server to avoid a network information theft whereas being able to use the redundancy located on other servers to rebuild the information after the network destruction of a server. The characteristics of this distributed system are exemplified. The relationships with duality of service and multiple description theory are analyzed and exemplified with the telemedecine case. Finally, a multiple description scheme with prioritized flows is defined and implemented. The Mojette operators and the resultant multimedia distributed architecture is valid both for any multimedia signals (image, video, voice) to be encoded and those already encoded and available as bit streams.
