This paper investigates a wireless ipv6-based network architecture to provide access to various multimediaapplications with support of voice services, in terms of end-to-end quality of service (QoS) and mobility support in order to ensure global mobility in a converged wired/wireless, voice/data network. The objective is how to jointly use already proposed by the international Engineering Task Force (IETF) protocols for the provision of an end-to-end service with some QoS guarantees. Our work studies transmissions for real-time traffic based on formats for voice over ip (Voip) and differs from others in that it has been based on the development of a detail simulator instead of a real testbed. QoS is addressed at a packet-level in terms of packet delivery delay and error performance (packet loss). To enforce QoS in the backbone network, data packets entering the backbone network are classified to differentiated service (DiffServ) aggregates. resource reservations protocol (RSVP) is used as the end-to-end signaling protocol. To provide for hierarchical mobility support it has been enhanced by several extensions.

New communication technologies are being developed and new user requirements are growing due to advances in fiber optics providing high link capacity at low cost. Traditional solutions are based on processing resources of host and network nodes in order to optimize link utilization. A simpler and lightweight solution could be reached by a new approach for designing network protocols; our proposal is initially limited to the LAN/structured cabling system environment, not excluding a further extension to MAN/WAN support. The leading idea is a broadband network architecture, based on native flow control, dynamic resource allocation and reallocation, and synchronous, connection-oriented fast circuit switching. It will provide a service based on multi-rate channels with short setup time and fixed switching requirements, as well as applications with bursty asynchronous traffic. A project framework is presented addressing the most important issues; physical, data link and network layer functions, data transfer schemes and traditional TCP/ip compatibility.

The paper reviews the network architecture and the structure of the network components in the PeterPan project, and presents the main results of the project field trials. The PeterPan (Provision of an Enhanced Transport by Exploiting Reservation in ip and Atm Networks) project was included in the ACTS research program of the European Union, and had the main objectives of defining, developing and experimenting a functional architecture suitable Fur an efficient support of Quality of Service (QoS) fur real time multimediaapplications.

One of the most challenging issues in the deployment of multimedia services with real-time requirements over ip-based networks is the possibility to guarantee a given Quality of Service to the constituent flows involved in the calls. This requires a strict control by network administrators on the network resources actually available and on the identity and profile of the user requiring the service;moreover, the provision of services with guaranteed QoS involves the deployment of accounting and billing systems synchronized with these network control mechanisms especially in the case of real-time billing applications. The object of this paper is the definition of a framework for the cooperation of all the mechanisms (QoS, session control, policy, billing) that contribute to the deployment of the multimedia services over IF-based managed networks.

Providing Quality of Service (QoS) support to TCP/ipapplications is needed urgently for multimedia Internet. This paper proposes a new scheme which could offer QoS support to TCP/ipapplications without rewriting legendary applications. It proposes the QoS Proxy Server Scheme by providing a network architecture which could offer QoS support, giving the description of the method used in this scheme to identify flow and accommodate the identified flow by an appropriate ATM connection. It also gives the description of the structure of the QoS Proxy Server and the algorithm for bandwidth allocation. As this scheme is accomplished by a specially designed ATM edge device called QoS Proxy Server, and this server could work independently according to its own knowledge library without the need for signaling from hosts it serves, the legendary applications and hosts could keep intact.

Congestion and large differences in available link bandwidth create challenges for the design of applications that want to deliver high quality video over the Internet. We investigate the placement of computation agents within the network to provide filtering to adapt MPEG system streams to the available bandwidth without transcoding. This paper presents an evaluation of our implementation in three different operating environments: a networking testbed in a laboratory environment, a home-user scenario (DSL line with 640 Kbit/sec), and a wide area network covering the Atlantic (server in Europe, client in the US). Our architecture leverages previous work and introduces efficient MPEG system filtering to achieve high-quality video over best-effort networks.
