Internet streaming applications should be congestion controlled and quality adaptive. Although the need for adaptive Internet streaming applications has been recognized, no comprehensive architecture that properly incorporates a congestion control mechanism has been presented. Large scale deployment of non-congestion controlled streaming applications could endanger stability of the Internet. The article presents an end-to-end architecture that is suited for non-interactive Internet streaming applications. The architecture integrates congestion control, quality adaptation and error control in a coherent fashion. It is argued that layered quality adaptation along with retransmission based error control are natural design choices for this class of Internet streaming applications. The author discusses the limitations of the end-to-end architecture and extends the architecture by adding multimedia proxy caches to overcome these limitations for playback streaming applications. Finally, a simple design methodology for Internet streaming applications is derived that allows customization without ignoring the main design requirements.

This paper presents a simulation tool used to demonstrate the effects of 3/sup rd/ generation wireless network access on ip-based multimedia applications. In 3/sup rd/ generation wireless networks like, e,g., the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), complex control and transport mechanisms influence the link quality for a given application, while the application itself influences the control mechanisms by generating load on the wireless link. To study the effects of such a dynamic system on the user-perceived quality of service (QoS) of a real-time multimedia application it is necessary to simulate the wireless link in real-time. Our tool allows to interface standard ip-based multimedia applications with an UMTS-specific link simulator. The system comprises essential layer 2 and 3 protocol functionality of the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) for terminal equipment (TE) and base station (BS). We motivate and describe the concept, system architecture and implementation in terms of timing, QoS mapping, packet- and circuit-switched (CS) services integration, and physical link parameters.

In this paper, we present an object-oriented approach to modeling systems targeted for the fast growing multimedia applications market. We focus on techniques to reach the first executable model in C++ and propose a design flow to refine the system to its implementation while minimizing re-coding efforts. We propose to take advantage of C++ expressiveness and SystemC modeling constructs to simplify mapping of the blocks, and provide possibilities for ip reuse. We enforce a strict separation of the internal behavior from the interface behavior of the design components and propose to explore those possibilities through a set-top box case study.

Congestion and large differences in available link bandwidth create challenges for the design of applications that want to deliver high quality video over the Internet. We investigate the placement of computation agents within the network to provide filtering to adapt MPEG system streams to the available bandwidth without transcoding. The paper presents an evaluation of our implementation in three different operating environments: a networking testbed in a laboratory environment, a home-user scenario (DSL line with 640 Kbit/sec), and a wide area network covering the Atlantic (server in Europe, client in the US). Our architecture leverages previous work and introduces efficient MPEG system filtering to achieve high quality video over best-effort networks.

Providing quality of service (QoS) support to TCP/ip applications is needed urgently for multimedia Internet. This paper proposes a new scheme which could offer QoS support to TCP/ip applications without rewriting legendary applications. It proposes the QoS proxy server scheme by providing a network architecture which could offer QoS support, giving the description of the method used in this scheme to identify flow and accommodate the identified flow by an appropriate ATM connection. It also gives the description of the structure of the QoS proxy server and the algorithm for bandwidth allocation. As this scheme is accomplished by a specially designed ATM edge device called QoS proxy server, and this server could work independently according to its own knowledge library without the need for signaling from hosts it serves, the legendary applications and hosts could keep intact.

This paper describes the field trial experience on the control and coordination of an interactive videoconferencing system. The system employs ATM and Internet networks to realize the continuous presence and the conference control and management, respectively. Four control and management functions are designed to closely emulate interactive videoconferences. Unlike middleware approaches, we developed a service-specific, programmable control and management platform for multimedia applications. Based on the platform, a centralized architecture is employed to realize the conference control and management in a prototype system. Running the prototype system in Taiwan ATM/Internet networks, we observed diverse aspects of the system behavior. The control and coordination behavior naturally depends on the specified service and designated architecture and noticeably reveals the characteristics of the underlying Internet/ATM networks.

Mobile processors form a large and very fast growing segment of semiconductor market. Although they are used in a great variety of embedded systems such as personal digital organizers (PDAs), smart cards, internet appliances, laptops, smart badges, cellular phones, wearable computers, and sensor networks, they share the common need for low power, code density, security, cost sensitivity and multimedia and communication processing. The goal of this paper is to review the field of processors for mobile applications. We survey a spectrum of processors, their system software, and the accompanying hardware components. The emphasis is on classification and identification of major technology and architecture trends. Companion to this paper is a WWW page [Mob00] which provides comprehensive additional material about mobile processors.

The recent emergence of the World Wide Web (WWW) and Internet is changing the studying habits of people. More and more institutions require an effective and flexible application to launch their distance learning programs on the WWW. Learn@Net is a possible solution. Learn@Net is a server-based distance learning system designed to provide centralized, flexible control and easy administration of online distance learning applications. It relies on an open architecture based on TCP/ip, HTML, Java and SQL. It involves functions such as virtual classroom, assignment handler, course material browser, discussion forum and online chat room to facilitate both online teaching and online learning through the WWW. © 1999 IEEE.
