The recent proliferation of computing devices and the contexts in which they are used demand diversity in collaborative applications as well. The objective of our research is to enable conferees to share applications that are adapted to their (heterogeneous) computing environments. This is achieved by using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for the communication medium. The conferees share the same data or a subset of that data represented in XML, but they may see it displayed in different ways as needed or desired. The framework adapts to the computing and network environment and transforms information so that it matches the client's local capabilities and resources.

This paper proposes a new rate control scheme for an MPEG-2 HDTV parallel encoding system consisting of multiple encoding units. In this rate control scheme, the target number of bits is allocated to each encoding unit every frame period using the complexity of the divided parts of an image. We evaluate this rate control scheme and verify that its image quality is as good or better than that of single encoding.

The growing popularity of delay-sensitive multi-player games over the Internet is creating a need for proper characterisation of such traffic. We are currently developing source models for game traffic, on a per-player basis, with the intended use being to scale the models to simulate scenarios involving large numbers of players, which will enable us to observe the effects of game traffic on the network. We outline the procedure used, and we show that for certain cases, relatively simple source models are able to provide sufficiently accurate results (in terms of mean delay and mean buffer occupancy).

We derive capacity bounds for watermarking and data hiding in the presence of just noticeable difference (JND) perceptual coding for a class of techniques that do not suffer from host signal interference. By modeling the lossy compression distortions on the hidden data using non-Gaussian statistics, we demonstrate that binary antipodal channel codes achieve capacity. It is shown that the data hiding capacity is at most equal to the loss in storage efficiency bit rate if watermarking and quantization for lossy compression occur in the same domain.

It has been observed (Saha and Vemuri, 1999) that when we compress a variety of images of different types using a fixed wavelet filter, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values vary widely from image to image. This large variation in PSNR by as much as 30 dB, can only be attributed to the nature and inherent characteristics of the image, since everything else is fixed. In this paper, we analyze the set of test images to determine the features in the images that may cause the coding performance variations. It is shown that most of the gray-level image features do not have any direct effect on the coding performance, and image activity measure is the only feature that has a correlation with the PSNR value.

Intelligent multimedia provides a basis for designing active databases with agents, multimedia and intelligent objects. Intelligent multimedia techniques and paradigms are defined. Multimedia paradigms can be applied to customise with many facets for many application areas. The computing techniques, a language, the Morph Gentezen (1943) deductive system and its models are applied towards an active multimedia database customization interface design. The application area is based on AI planning and reasoning defining specific dynamics based on descriptions and compatibility relations. Intelligent visual computing paradigms are applied to define the multiagent multimedia computing and active databases and prespecified views.

Global sharing and distribution of information on the Internet result in a great demand for efficient multi-lingual text compression for Web servers and proxy implementations. Current text compressors such as Huffman coding, Lempel-Ziv (LZ) variants, and LZ-Huffman cascading fail to perform efficiently because of the mis-matched character sampling size and the large character set of multilingual languages. Our previous research has shown that a better compression ratio can be obtained by re-adjusting the character sampling rate. We investigate the cascading of LZ variants to Huffman coding for multilingual documents. Two basic approaches, static and dynamic dictionaries, are proposed. Techniques for reducing the dictionary overhead are also suggested. Based on our multi-lingual corpus, our adaptive cascading scheme can perform better than the well-known cascading compressor, gzip, by an average of about 20%.

The transition from analog to digital video enables consumer access to an enormous amount of high quality video material. The authors describe an architecture of a video content filtering system through video analysis and abstraction. They explain the algorithms for video characterization, their performance and practical considerations for including them in the architecture for video filtering. The algorithms and the architecture for abstracted video representation can be used in a variety of consumer domain applications, such as a personalized news retrieval system, home video library or commercial skipping.

The time-decreasing learning rate and neighborhood function of the basic SOM (self-organizing map) algorithm reduce its capability to adapt weights for a varied environment. In dealing with non-stationary input distributions and changing environments, we propose a modified SOM algorithm called "time adaptive SOM", or TASOM, that automatically adjusts the learning rate and neighborhood size of each neuron independently. The proposed TASOM is tested with stationary environments and its performance is compared with that of the basic SOM. It is also tested with non-stationary environments for representing the letter 'L', which may be translated, rotated, or scaled. Moreover, the TASOM is used for adaptive segmentation of images which may have undergone gray-level transformation.

In this paper, the problem of edge preserving smoothing in image processing is tackled by combining a noise corruption model and a region and edge image model. The derivation of the probability model for the first order difference in the gray levels of the region pixels and edge pixels leads to a non-linear filter with coefficients as functions of the estimated noise variance and edge intensity. Such a model-based approach allows the design of improved filters for noise filtering and image compression. Experimental results demonstrate the improved performance of the filter for both synthetic and natural images.
