Multidimensional databases are used for online analytic processing (OLAP) applications with great success. We introduce a method of using OLAP techniques on a text collection: combining text searching and ranking techniques from information retrieval and the slicing, dicing, and drill-down from OLAP. Our approach integrates structured and unstructured data and takes advantage of the data hierarchies found in the structured data. We describe a prototype where standard multidimensional database tools are used to implement typical information retrieval functionality such as Boolean retrieval and relevance ranking.

This paper proposes an extension to general-purpose architectures to improve the performance of multimedia operations. More specifically, we consider the multimedia JPEG/MPEG standards and investigate the possibility to accelerate the Huffman encoding operation which is a known performance limiting function found in these standards. Our investigation suggests that it is possible to decrease the total number of execution cycles by 9% to 12% when the proposed unit is implemented as an extension to existing general-purpose hardware. This new extension is intended to be an integral part of a multimedia functional unit (MFU) that performs specific multimedia operations in a time efficient manner.

The contractual relation between customers and telecommunications service providers are becoming increasingly complex, due largely to changes in the marketplace and growth in the number and complexity of services on offer. In order to guarantee a certain quality of offered service and in response to customer needs, some mechanisms of service level management must be applied. The service level management in telecommunication networks is made by a agreement, established during the service subscription, which is used by customers and service providers to control the service level. This paper introduces a service level management system for ATM networks, which can be applied to different telecommunication systems.

In this paper we proposed a method to evaluate the similarity of images compressed by a given digital wavelet transform, which allows for comparing lossless or lossy-compressed images. Two features that describe the image structural content, edge point locations and edge density, are computed directly from multiscale data. Depending on the image type and the feature selections for processing, the distance between two images is computed in one- or two-dimensional space. This method facilitates content-based image querying and automatic database retrieval. In addition, images can be sorted and appropriately indexed with respect to such global characteristics as smoothness, texture direction and repetition period.

To guarantee quality of service (QoS), the requirements of video transmission, such as delay and cell loss rate (CLR), are very stringent. These constraints are difficult to meet if high network utilization is desired. In this paper, dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms, in which scene change identification is incorporated, are proposed to improve the bandwidth utilization. The bandwidth allocated for each scene is based on the maximum and mean bandwidth of the scene. When a scene change is identified, a new negotiation process is triggered, and the bandwidth is reallocated.

In this paper different architectures for real time image constant coefficients convolutions are considered. Accordingly, look-up-table (LUT) based multiplication/convolution, LUT based distributed arithmetic (DA) convolution and multiplierless convolution (MC) implementations into FPGA structures has been investigated. In one result, the choice between these architectures depends on given coefficients values, however in most cases the MC preferable. Furthermore the change of coefficient values in real-time systems is also considered. This work is a contribution to worldwide intense research on developing reconfigurable and user dedicated custom computing machines (CCM).

Detection of document skew is an important step in document image analysis. The paper presents a new method for calculation of document skew. The method forms large connected components by a smoothing algorithm and calculates the document skew by finding the orientation of the minimum-area bounding rectangle of one of several connected components. Connection of text to non-text in the smoothing step does not degrade the performance of the method. The smoothing parameters are determined automatically and no manual adjustment is necessary. The method is not limited in the range of detectable skew angles and the achievable accuracy. Experimental results show the high performance of the algorithm in detecting document skew for a variety of documents with different levels of complexity.

The paper discusses the requirements for authoring methodologies for large multimedia systems to be used for technical documentation in the domain of 'safety critical' industries. In such industries the documentation used to support maintenance and repair may itself be safety critical, in that incorrect documentation can lead to incorrect maintenance procedures. Design issues for such systems include those of the verifiable, both in terms of their content and other issues such as sequence of presentation. It is argued that the addressing of these issues is essential to the development of technical documentation systems that are of sufficient quality to be used for safety critical applications such as within the transport industry. The requirements that viable design methodologies for these applications must address are discussed, and a methodology is proposed, based on traditional authoring methods and process algebra based formal specification and verification.

The key to the efficient operation of turbo codes is the interleaver design. With proper design, the pairing of low-weight sequences to the input of the encoders can be avoided. Circular shift interleavers can be used to ensure that the minimum distance due to weight-2 input sequences grows roughly as /spl radic/2N, where N is the block length. We generalized the mapping function of the circular shift interleaver to be suitable for both equal and unequal error protections. Also, we present the results of a unique examination of the behavior of the general circular shift interleaver for equal and unequal error protections using turbo code with short frames.

Digital watermarking is an emerging research area for copyright protection of electronic documents and media, which is one of the most important problems to be solved in the cyberspace society. A statistic approach for embedding and extracting a digital watermark on an image is proposed. This approach is based on the realization that a stego-image after watermark attacks should preserve the characteristics of the stego-image if the stego-image after attacks retains its commercial values. In other words, the appearance of the image after attacks is still clearly visible and similar to the original image. This kind of preservation can be reflected as the variances of color levels of pixels both in stego-without-attacks- and stego-with-attacks-images are most likely the same. The embedded digital watermark by this approach seems robust after several attacks are performed on the stego-image.
