We address the problem of transmitting JPEG compressed image over a lossy network. We introduce a combination of block level triangular interleaving scheme (TRII), and variable and selective forward error correction scheme (VS-FEC) to make the transmitted data more resilient while using the network bandwidth more efficiently in the presence of bursty losses. Our results show that TRII barely affects the final compression ratio of the transmitted image (on the average just 4% below JPEG), while considerably increases its resilience to errors. Also, in the presence of losses, a new scheme is introduced to dynamically add a variable FEC to avoid retransmission of the lost data. A small amount of FEC overhead was needed (4%, versus 10%-15% in constant FEC) to be at least 90% sure on the average that the protected information will not be damaged during transmission.

Watermarking has become a major topic to solve authentication problems and copyright protection as major security demands in digital marketplaces. A wide variety of watermarking techniques have been proposed in the literature. Most techniques have been developed for still images; currently the research community is also enforcing approaches for other multimedia data like video, audio and 3D models. In our paper we summarize the main watermarking parameters and introduce a media independent classification scheme. Our classification scheme is based on the application areas. We show the important parameters and possible attacks. Based on our proposed classification the quality of the watermarking techniques can be evaluated. Furthermore we address the need for combining digital video and audio watermarking for media authentication.

Advances in communication and computation technologies and the recent marriage between the two allows users to have access to information sources via portable, mobile computing devices, and wireless connection. Broadcasting has been suggested as a possible solution for several limitations within this new environment. In order to limit the amount of energy consumed at the mobile unit, indexing can be considered as an energy-efficient solution within the broadcasting environment. In this work, we suggest possible allocation strategies of indexes along with their data objects (for an object-oriented database environment) on the broadcast channel. We conduct the timing analysis and simulation necessary to observe the effects of the allocation strategies on both the response time and energy consumption at the mobile clients.

In distributed systems uneven arrival of the tasks may overload few hosts keeping the rest of the hosts lightly loaded or even idle. This results in overall poor system performance in spite of the system capabilities. To utilize the capabilities of distributed systems load balancing can be used. Load balancing always comes with a lot of overheads. We propose an algorithm based on differential load measurement (DLM) for the load balancing. This algorithm helps us in selecting proper hosts for load balancing which can lead us to performance improvement of the system.

The issues of video coding based on exceptionally suitable for SHD format Shapiro (1993) EZW (embedded zero wavelet) algorithm is discussed. The main aspect is a possibility of building a real time system which is able to process the algorithm. Thus a dedicated architecture for the purpose is considered. The method presented is based on the EZW method modified such a way to simplify the hardware architecture dedicated for its execution. Such a simplification allows one to use FPGA technology as a target platform for the system. The MISD (multiple instruction-stream single data-stream) architecture is proposed as a solution of the problem. The architecture is characterised by high speed execution of the EZW algorithm. Simplicity and performance classify the algorithm for implementation in high capacity programmable FPGA structures. The paper is the authors contribution in the world's development of custom computing machines (CCM).

We explore the problem of proving ownership or origin of multimedia content like image/video or audio signals through watermarking. The need for watermarking arises out of the unsuitability of present copyright laws for claiming ownership of digital content. Watermarking schemes however, are threatened by counterfeit attacks, which primarily use the freedom available in the choice of signature or choice of the watermarking method. A restrictive protocol for watermarking could go a long way in rendering counterfeit attacks extremely difficult. We suggest a comprehensive protocol that makes it possible for the true owner to claim ownership unambiguously, while making it extremely difficult for a pirate to do so.

Online analytical processing is an emerging technique for the implementation of decision support applications that access remote datacubes over information highways. We propose a novel approach for sending datacubes over congested networks, so that, in order to preserve fast response time, some datacube tuples can be eventually lost but yet preserving a good approximation of the overall datacube. The main idea is to prioritize the datacube information and to send it using a priority-based transmission protocol. The proposed method relies on two well-known techniques: the wavelet decomposition, for the encoding of the datacube into a sequence of prioritized coefficients, and the priority encoding transmission protocol, to deliver them. To reconstruct the datacube with a user-defined error level, priorities are assigned using a thresholding technique. Preliminary experimental results are very encouraging.

Turbo codes have been shown to approach the Shannon limit for error correcting capability at low signal-to-noise ratios given large sized frames. Extensive research efforts have been examining ways to enhance the performance of turbo codes for short frames (e.g., voice transmission). One way of enhancing the performance is to optimize the energy allocated to each bit stream to achieve the best performance possible. In standard turbo codes, all bits are transmitted with equal energy. Changing the energy allocation strategy can enhance the performance of turbo codes with short frame lengths. Using computer simulation and analytic bounds, different strategies are discussed and applicability to short frame applications investigated.

This research is concerned with the watermarking technique which embeds image data invisibly into a colored image based on the wavelet transform (FT) and discrete cosine transform (DCT) so that the watermark data be not impaired in compression, filtering, cropping, rescaling, re-sampling, and other digital manipulations. The suggested method comprises the steps of transforming the target image using the WT, transforming an image watermark using DCT, integrating the wavelet transformed digital image with the DCT-transformed watermark image to embed the fingerprint into the intellectual property, and generating the watermarked image using the inverse wavelet transform. In the experiments, it was found that the suggested method is highly effective against impairment of the watermark that would otherwise be caused by the image processing operations, such as compression, filtering, re-sampling, rotation, and cropping.

Major advances in high performance computing software and hardware have made it possible for designers and analysts to obtain detailed information about the behavior of complex systems. However, this has lead to a proliferation of vast amounts of data which is beyond the ability of humans to easily comprehend using traditional visualization methods. The method presented combines emerging visualization tools with data filtering and data mining techniques. This method uses virtual reality (VR) coupled with multimedia techniques to display information within an environment that allows non-expert users to understand and interpret the data. A prototype visualization tool was developed under a NASA SBIR Phase II effort. This paper builds on the results of this work and suggests a visualization framework that can be used to examine, comprehend and interpret results in any complex data set, particularly those used in support of decision making activities.
