Handheld devices or personal digital assistants (PDAs) are increasingly being used for purposes other than storing personal information. A wide variety of applications are being developed to take advantage of computing power available on PDAs. Also a need is being felt in non-English speaking countries like India to develop applications in local languages. Such applications are expected to be useful in field like education, health and census etc., for data collection and dissemination. It is the purpose of this paper to show how support for local language can be built on low cost PDAs.

Key management infrastructure in an ad hoc network needs to be formed in an ad hoc manner. This paper introduces a novel multipurpose ad hoc key management infrastructure (KMI) that can be used to provide symmetric key infrastructure (SKI) or public key infrastructure (PKI). A further application to group keying with distributed group membership management is also discussed.

This paper proposes a method to select the software architecture for a family of systems that meets user requirements. The method is based on a set of universally accepted design principles and tactics that aims to establish a systematic correlation between the quality requirements of a system and an architectural style that best implements it. The proposed method can also be a valuable assistant to a novice software engineer in selecting an optimal architectural style because the selection of an appropriate architectural style plays an important role in success or failure of a system.

We have implemented a root-extraction stemmer for Arabic which is similar to the Khoja stemmer but without a root dictionary. Our stemmer was found to perform equivalently to the Khoja stemmer as well as so-called "light" stemmers in monolingual document retrieval tasks performed on the Arabic Trec-2001 collection. A root dictionary, therefore, does not improve Arabic monolingual document retrieval.

This paper proposes an efficient method to extract the most important and non-redundant sentence segments based on sum of similarity. The new characteristics of our method are listed as follows: 1) we use preprocessing to delete the additional information (comma parenthesis) that won't turn up in the summarization; 2) redesign the vector similarity between a pair of sentences by using sum of similarity; 3) in order to maximize topic diversity, we use a strikingly different redundancy reducing ways other than MMR.. Experimental results show that our approach compares favorably with some other summary systems.

In many applications a software implementation of ECC (elliptic curve cryptography) might be inappropriate due to performance requirements, therefore hardware implementations are needed. We present some results about a novel hardware implementation for ECC, that introduces also a form of parallelism to maximize the use of function units and hence to improve the throughput. Then we propose a comprehensive comparison of this new architecture with both some RSA architectures and other ECC implementations in ASIC VLSI technology.

In recent years, amphibian populations in many parts of the world have experienced an apparent widespread, yet poorly understood decline. One of the obstacles comes from the difficulties in rapidly collecting and analyzing amphibian population data from the field sites. In this paper, we investigate how to apply wireless network and mobile computing technologies to build a mobile amphibian population information system (MAPIS). This system not only enhances communication between field biologists in different locations, but also speed onsite data entry and analysis. Thus, the field biologists can optimize collection efforts and better exploit narrow windows of ecologically relevant population behaviors.

Hypergraphs are a very powerful tool and can represent many problems. In this paper we define a new image representation based on hypergraphs. This representation conducts to a new lossless compression algorithm for images called HLC. We present the algorithm and give some experimental results proving its efficiency. Finally we show that this algorithm can be generalized to three-dimensional images and to parametric lossy compression.

Notification is especially important in the service oriented architecture (SOA) model engendered by Web services, where Web services interact with each other through the exchange of messages. In this paper we compare and contrast two competing specifications in the area of notifications. The first one, WS-notification, is part of the Web service resource framework (WSRF). The second one is the WS-eventing specification. These specifications are expected to have far reaching implications on the development of asynchronous, complex, dynamic systems.

In this paper we propose a robust optical flow estimation algorithm for objects whose motion patterns are classified as temporal textures. While suitability of contemporary motion estimation algorithms depends on physical properties of textures, the proposed technique is robust enough to compute accurate flow patterns for a wide range of temporal textures independent of their type. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed technique producing accurate flow estimates for a wide range of temporal textures.
