The World Wide Web provides new opportunities for distance education over the Internet. The Web, when combined with other network tools can be used to create a virtual classroom to bring together a community of learners for interactive education. In the paper we purpose the moving some of educational instructions of the Institute of Science Dokuz Eylul University at the WWW. This objective is achieved by investigating the use of emerging network technologies for training full time Students and part time students. This research will use the electronic educational materials already available on the Web;and it will evaluate the effectiveness of various collaborative tools.

The overabundance of DTV (Digital Television) programs precipitates a need for new tools to help people find programs and personalize TV viewing experience. In this paper(*), we present a multi-agent system that provides personalized and private service in PDRs (Personal Digital Recorders). This paper details the architecture and components of the system. The multi-agent system observes the users' viewing behaviors in the background, updates the users' profiles continuously, and provides different programs for different users according to their respective profile information. It can protect the users' privacy by means of utilizing XML encryption of the reported information and verifying the user's name and password before reporting his/her profile to service provider. This paper also describes the communication mechanism in the multi-agent system.

The current exponential growth of DTV programs precipitates a need for new filtering techniques to provide program personalization for people. Several filtering methods, notably Boolean filtering and Similarity-based filtering, have been proposed in information filtering. This paper first briefly describes architecture of program personalization, XML based metadata representation, and discusses Boolean and Similarity-based filtering, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Then a new hybrid filter is proposed. The hybrid filter consists of VSM based filtering, which is a Similarity-based filtering, and XML query filtering, which is a Boolean filtering. This hybrid filter is effective and efficient for program personalization in future DTV with local storage.

In order to enhance the functions of IMCPs (the Product of Interactive Multimedia Creator)over Internet through streaming multimedia technology., in the paper some methods are proposed to combine IMCPs with MPEG4 technology by which IMCPs could be translated to streaming multimedia and transferred over Internet, these methods include converting the file format of IMCPs'into MP4 format, Revealing Chinese characters, improving QoS, extending MPEG4s support streamType and so on. These technologies have been realized by presenting a process of both converting the products of Founder Author Tool into a kind of MPEG4 file format and building a corresponding streaming media player which further enhances the content of Founder Author Tool's products by streaming multimedia technology. On the other hand, IMC(Interactive Multimedia Creator) software can painlessly produce MPEG4 contents without learning any new content development tools, and benefit from the international standard and its interoperability.

To extract informative terms through known relevance information for query expansion is an important issue in the design of an effective text retrieval system. Various discriminant functions have been developed as a device for eliciting good terms. In this paper the notion of informativeness of terms is interpreted and discriminant functions are formalised both based on information-theoretic ideas for auromatic query expansion. Preliminary, results show that the approach adopted in this paper is worthy of continued investigation.

Correct alignment of protein sequences is critical for accurate understanding of the evolution of the protein. Therefore, it is important to know how likely an alignment is correct. Any approach that uses randomized sequences to access significance uses only part of the information inherent in an amino acid sequence. Offset alignment evaluation is a method to model and estimate the confidence of a given protein sequence alignment, which takes into account the inherent information from the protein sequence secondary structures. The confidence of a given alignment is estimated by a significance score based on the set of offset alignments. Finally, we introduce OAE, a Java implementation of the Offset alignment evaluation which is freely available to the public.

In this paper, e-words are used for coding k-ary trees with n internal nodes. The properties of e-words are discussed in depth, such as the necessary and sufficient condition of e-words, and based on the properties, a loopless algorithm is obtained to generate e-words for k-ary trees in lexicographic order, which is more efficient in both space and time than the previous algorithm. In addition, e-words can also be easily generated in lexicographic order by a recursive algorithm, and in the order with the Strong Minimal Change Property (SMCP) by a loopless algorithm.

We present in this paper the effectiveness and the feasibility of measuring search engine efficiency using RankPower, a single value measurement. RankPower rates the search engines by computing the number and the rank of relevant URLs among the returned results. This is different from traditional performance measures of information retrieval systems using the precision and recall rates. The RankPower is much more easier to compute and much more intuitive for ordinary, web search users. The conclusions are supported by a set of empirical results collected from the experiments that the authors designed and carried out.

One of the major problems of managing information systems for e-Commerce or m-Commerce is to estimate the memory utilization for its set of servers, among others. In particular, along with system security and fault tolerance, memory management is perhaps the most frequently observed challenge that the IS/IT manager faces on a daily basis. A framework for building an automated intelligent agent for memory management under the client-server architecture is suggested in this paper. Further, possible applications of the framework in terms of data mining are suggested.

Distinct features of handheld devices, such as their mobility, personalization and location-awareness, engender a new class of consumer-oriented software applications. While simple shopping assistant programs were one of the first to emerge for this class of devices, many modern m-commerce applications become more complex and utilize a wide range of features of pervasive, computing. In this paper, we discuss a number of design issues pertinent to the development of these applications including context awareness, personalization, ubiquitous access, and intelligent interfaces., We applied these and other principles in the design and development of SMMART, an intelligent context aware framework for delivery of personalized and targeted promotions to the users of mobile devices, which is used as a case study throughout this paper.
