This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to access control in mobile agent systems, where a multipoint security check mechanism visualizes the services of a host as individual components and access of each will require authentication. Since the security check crosscuts various functional components of mobile agents and their platforms, it is naturally handled in the aspect-oriented paradigm. This approach is suitable not only for developing mobile agent systems from scratch, but also for enhancing legacy mobile agent systems. We demonstrate our approach through a case study.

Distinct features of handheld devices, such as their mobility, personalization and location-awareness, engender a new class of consumer-oriented software applications. While simple shopping assistant programs were one of the first to emerge for this class of devices, many modern m-commerce applications become more complex and utilize a wide range of features of pervasive computing. In this paper, we discuss a number of design issues pertinent to the development of these applications including context-awareness, personalization, ubiquitous access, and intelligent interfaces. We applied these and other principles in the design and development of SMMART, an intelligent context-aware framework for delivery of personalized and targeted promotions to the users of mobile devices, which is used as a case study throughout this paper.

This paper considers a teaching approach applied to an introductory computer science course. The individual work with each of the students attending such a course consists of assigning examples, exercises and problems corresponding to the respective level of the student's preparation. These exercises and problems are generated by a system that uses templates which are developed in advance. Each template is a parameterized program or program fragment written in a programming language such as C, C++, Java, etc. The parameters are XML-like elements and represent statements interpreted by a specific system. As a consequence of this, items similar to the initial program text are generated. Simultaneously, the system also generates the results from their execution. The generated examples are in HTML format and are stored on the class Website.

In this paper, we present techniques for exploiting intermittently available resources in grid infrastructures to support QoS-based multimedia applications on mobile devices. Specifically, we integrate power aware admission control, grid resource discovery, dynamic load-balancing and energy adaptation techniques to enable power deficient devices such as PDAs to run distributed multimedia applications. Our integrated solution adapts to dynamic changes in device energy consumption and unpredictable grid resource availabilities without compromising application quality of service (QoS). Our simulation results indicate that our power-aware grid-based approaches, not only improve QoS of mobile multimedia services, but also efficiently load-balance the grid resources.

Location is one of the most important contexts used in pervasive computing environments. GPS systems are intensely used to detect the location information; they mainly work in outdoor environment. Applications call for precise, easy-to-build, and easy-to-use indoor location systems. This paper presents our work to implement an indoor location determination system for Microsoft-Windows-based platforms using a preexisting IEEE 802.11 wireless network. The location is determined from radio signal strength information collected from multiple base stations at different physical locations. Our experiments show a high accuracy rate of this approach.

One of the major problems of managing information systems for e-Commerce or m-Commerce is to estimate the memory utilization for its set of servers, among others. In particular, along with system security and fault tolerance, memory management is perhaps the most frequently observed challenge that the IS/IT manager faces on a daily basis. A framework for building an automated intelligent agent for memory management under the client-server architecture is suggested in this paper. Further, possible applications of the framework in terms of data mining are suggested.

The complexities of the basic unit of OO systems, the class, have resulted in a plethora of implementation-based testing techniques (IBTTs) to test the characteristics of a class. Surprisingly, there has been little or no research in the area of automatically identifying those IBTTs suitable for testing a class. In this paper we present a tool that automates the process of mapping IBTTs to a class under test (CUT). The mapping process identifies those IBTTs that can suitably test characteristics of the CUT and, more importantly, provides feedback to the tester that facilitates identification of the characteristics of the CUT that are not suitably tested by any of the IBTTs in the list.

A general algorithm for eliminating interferential curve in text image was proposed, which converted images into basic graph and super graph firstly, and then treated interferential curve as principal curve to detect principal curve in image. In the detection, improved shortest path algorithm and orientation offset algorithm were used, and finally, the detected curve was removed from original image. Experiments conducted with a variety of text images showed that this algorithm is effective for removing interferential curve in text image.

This paper proposes a new multiple description coding technique that uses different data transforms to generate multiple descriptions of a given signal. A linear fusion is employed to reconstruct the signal as the output of a central decoder. This new method exhibits the advantages of multiple description vector quantization while having the complexity of multiple description scalar quantization. Another technique called "forced errors in channels" is then introduced to reduce the distortion in the central decoder output allowing some increase in the side distortions. When applied to images, the new techniques yield results, which are competitive compared with the results from current state-of-the-art coders.

Program slicing decomposes a large program into smaller sections that contain statements relevant to a computation under study. This paper presents a novel method for visual slicing of message passing programs. Each slice is computed based on predicates and focuses on inter-process messages that influence the predicate. A predicate slice is visualized based on the space-time diagram and captures some global requirements or suspected error properties of the distributed program. We have implemented the methods in Visper, an MPI-like message-passing environment that supports high level services such as check-pointing and fault tolerance.
