This paper proposes a parallel implementation of the multiple sequence alignment algorithm, known as ClustalW, on distributed memory parallel machines. The proposed algorithm divides a progressive alignment into subtasks and schedules them dynamically. A task tree is built according to the dependency of the generated phylogenetic tree. The computation and communication costs of the tasks are estimated at run-time and updated periodically. With dynamic scheduling, tasks are allocated to the processors considering the tasks' estimated computation and communication costs and the processors' workload in order to minimize the completion time. The experiment results show that the proposed parallel implementation achieves a considerable speedup over the sequential ClustalW.

E-commerce involves business activities that deal with the exchange of values for goods and services on the Internet where all transactions are carried out electronically. These activities consist of different operations that depend on data. Web data emanate from data sources that are inherently distributed and potentially heterogeneous. However, Web users, and indeed, participants of e-commerce transactions desire access to data without necessarily understanding the intricacies of the underlying data sources. Unfortunately, data infrastructure has not been a major focus of e-commerce research. In this paper, we characterize e-commerce data sets to reveal the storage requirements and other data management needs of such data. We specify a common-term vocabulary to make explicit the content of data, and hence, facilitate the integration of e-commerce data sets. Central to the semantic description of data is a filter mechanism that recognizes a context schema.

Bezier curves are robust tool for a wide array of applications ranging from computer-aided design to calligraphic character, outlining and object shape description. In terms of the control point generation process, existing shape descriptor techniques that employ Bezier curves do not distinguish between regions where an object's shape changes rapidly and those where the change is more gradual or flat. This can lead to an erroneous shape description, particularly where there are significantly sharp changes in shape, such as at sharp corners. This paper presents a novel shape description algorithm called a generic shape descriptor using Bezier curves (SDBC), which defines a new strategy for Bezier control point generation by integrating domain specific information about the shape of an object in a particular region. The strategy also includes an improved dynamic fixed length coding scheme for control points. The SDBC framework has been rigorously tested upon a number of arbitrary shapes, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses have confirmed its superior performance in comparison with existing algorithms.

UML models describe the structure and behavior of existing or future software systems. In addition to the UML model, developers consult metrics and other attribute data for evaluation and analysis purposes. In hitherto techniques, attribute data and structural data in the diagrams of the UML model is split in different representations. For the process of evaluation of a system the attribute data must be combined with the structural data. Geographical information systems (GIS) deploy visualization techniques to combine these different types of data. We propose a set of visualization techniques adopted from GIS to enrich UML models with attribute data. Advantages and examples of the visualizations are discussed, as well as limitations to the applicability. Especially the technique where colors represent attribute values of elements seems promising.

System requirements, which define automatic behavior within a domain model, appear variously as business policies, engineering rules, domain laws, constraints, and state transitions. At first glance, such requirements seem easy to implement in the conventional object oriented (OO) space, but when looked closely, the most natural way of expressing such behavior is the rule based approach. Given a seamless bridge between the two paradigms, the combination not only provides ease of programming but also conceptual clarity at a higher level. In this paper, we consider the features of logic languages and their advantages in representation of various aforesaid system requirements. We look at the conventional three tier object oriented architecture and its advantage and disadvantages using different examples. We propose an optimum architecture that combines the best of both. We also apply the proposed architecture in the context of building highly configurable systems.

This paper focuses on the development of a maintainable information filtering system. The simple and efficient solution to this problem is to block the Web sites by URL, including IP address. However, it is not efficient for unknown Web sites and it is difficult to obtain complete block list. Content based filtering is suggested to overcome this problem as an additional strategy of URL filtering. The manual rule based method is widely applied in current content filtering systems, but they overlook the knowledge acquisition bottleneck problems. To solve this problem, we employed the multiple classification ripple-down rules (MCRDR) knowledge acquisition method, which allows the domain expert to maintain the knowledge base without the help of knowledge engineers. Throughout this study, we prove the MCRDR based information filtering system can easily prevent unknown Web information from being delivered and easily maintain the knowledge base for the filtering system.

The popularity of distributed file systems continues to grow. Reasons they are preferred over traditional centralized file systems include fault tolerance, availability, scalability and performance. In addition, peer-to-peer (P2P) system concepts and scalable functions are being incorporated into the domain of file systems. This survey paper explores the design paradigms and important issues that relate to such systems and discusses the various research activities in the field of distributed peerto-peer file systems.

This paper proposes a new method of bandwidth sharing policy which dynamically adjusts the bandwidth among the different services within the cell with changing network traffics. The proposed method, called min-max fairness scheme, exhibits good performances in cellular network applications where bandwidth is at a premium such as in multimedia communications. The improved efficiency of the scheme is achieved by considering the online and the offline services in different ways as well as using a strategy of temporary borrowing the reserved bandwidth for offline services. The scheme distributes the bandwidth among the services as evenly as possible and guarantees the minimum bandwidth to all the services besides maintaining the quality of service at various traffic loads. Simulation results are presented to confirm the superior performance compared with other recent existing schemes.

In this paper, an efficient architecture for multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup m/) using addition chains is presented. The approach followed was based on the Itoh-Tsujii algorithm targeting a fast implementation on reconfigurable hardware devices. We give the design details of the proposed architecture whose main building blocks are a field multi-squarer block, a field polynomial multiplier and a BRAM two-port memory. Our design is able to compute multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup 193/) in about 1.33/spl mu/S using only 27 clock cycles.

Design patterns document good design solutions to a recurring problem in a particular context. They are typically modeled using UML. In practice, however, pattern-related information is lost when a design pattern is applied or composed because UML does not keep track of this information. Consequently, the designer cannot identify design patterns used in software system design diagrams. The benefits of design patterns are compromised because the designers cannot communicate with each other in terms of the design patterns they use and their design decisions and tradeoffs. In this paper, we present a Web service (VisDP) for explicitly visualizing design patterns in UML diagrams. This Web service is developed based on a UML profile containing new stereotypes, tagged values and constraints for visualizing design patterns in UML diagrams. With this service, the user is able to identify design patterns by moving the mouse and viewing color changes in UML diagrams. Additional pattern-related information can be dynamically displayed based on the mouse location.
