In this paper, joint conditional probability is localized to better capture the local properties of a neighborhood for image segmentation. A new local spatial likelihood is defined for a neighborhood, which gives rise to local spatial posterior associated with the defined local prior. The proposed method associates a novel nonparametric approach for estimating the underlying distributions and is compared with a parametric approach. Both approaches segment images by maximizing the local spatial posterior function. The results indicate that the spatially localized posterior function overcomes the inherent errors of general posterior function and gives remarkable robustness against heavy noises.

This study analyzes the effects of attitudes and experience on the search process. Ninety-seven participants sought answers to six information requests by conducting searches in a controlled Web environment. Our findings show that computer anxiety had a negative effect on the participants' search performance, their confidence in the correctness of their answers, and their satisfaction with the search process, and a positive effect on the amount of time spent on the search tasks. The participants' perceptions of their ability to perform search tasks and their prior search experience were both highly correlated with confidence, but ultimately were irrelevant to their actual performance. These findings, coupled with results from earlier studies, highlight the need for search interfaces that reduce anxiety by supporting users throughout the search process.

We present a study of existing peer-to-peer systems and suggest a preliminary solution for implementing a file-sharing application for use by small trusted groups of users, for example 50-200 nodes. We review existing literature on peer-to-peer systems, and application examples of peer-to-peer architectures. We describe two models. One estimates the expected number of query results in a hybrid data-sharing peer-to-peer system, the other determines file replication needs for ensuring file availability for small numbers of users. We use information obtained from these models to design a file sharing system for small numbers of users.

Today many data grid applications need to manage and process a very large amount of data distributed across multiple grid nodes and stored in relational databases. The Grid Relational Catalog Project (GRelC) developed at the CACT/ISUFI of the University of Lecce, represents an attempt to design and deploy a grid-DBMS for the Globus Community. In this paper, after defining the grid-DBMS concept, we describe the GRelC library which is layered on top of the Globus Toolkit. The user can build client applications on top of it that can easily get access to and interact with data resources.

Commitment schemes are building blocks for guaranteeing fairness in higher-level cryptographic protocols such as mental poker protocols and others. A party Alice commits to a value v (a bit or a bitstring) without revealing it. Alice should not be able to cheat by opening the commitment as v' /spl ne/ v nor to deny having committed at all. Most commitment schemes in the literature rely on hash functions, which should be strongly collision-free for the scheme to be secure. Yet collision-freeness can only be empirically checked and cannot be met with total certainty. We present a commitment scheme which avoids hash functions by using a public-key cryptosystem instead.

In this paper we illustrate problems encountered together with proposed solutions when machine translation has to deal with languages with different family origins. The languages chosen are Classical Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and French. The machine translation architectures used are an adapted transfer methodology, and a "global" methodology in seven steps, which is new. What is common between the problems encountered is semantics. If one wishes to have machine translation of high quality there are two issues that must be resolved. The first of these is the semantic aspect of the linguistic units and the second is that the translation calculus has to be adapted to the languages to be processed.

We investigate the deployment possibilities of speech enabled services in a Web based e-learning environment. The integration of speech technology is realized with a client/server architecture. Therefore, the services speech synthesis, speech recognition, and speaker verification are installed at a central SpeechServer. The client uses a Java applet (SpeechApplet), which is integrated in an HTML page. It takes the user's input (e.g. speech or text input) and activates the according service at the SpeechServer. The SpeechApplet is easy to integrate into existing Web pages and aims at a simple JavaScript interface for communication between the Web page and the applet. In this paper we introduce this system, explain different modules, and discuss first evaluation results of these technologies.

Adaptive multirate (AMR) codec was standardised for GSM in 1999. AMR offers substantial improvement over previous GSM speech codecs in error robustness by adapting speech and channel coding depending on channel conditions. However, current standard do not exploit the multirate capability of AMR codec in source signal based adaptation that would optimise the average bit-rate vs. quality trade-off. This paper presents a source signal based rate adaptation algorithm for AMR codec in GSM system. Together with fast power control, it can be used to increase the system capacity and further increase the robustness of GSM AMR codec.

Electronic examinations are those examinations performed through a computer where questions and answers are computer files rather than sheets of paper. The temptation of using electronic examinations as a distance learning evaluation tool is obvious. However, security concerns must be considered. In this paper, we present a secure electronic examination protocol. Using wireless technology, we propose a trade-off solution between examination security (in terms of examination result correctness) and examination flexibility.

In this paper, we propose a secure account-based payment protocol which is suitable for wireless networks. The proposed protocol employs symmetric-key operations which require lower computation at all engaging parties than existing payment protocols. The proposed protocol also satisfies transaction security properties provided by public-key based payment protocols such as SET and iKP. The formal analysis illustrates that our protocol achieves the goals of payment protocols. Moreover, the credit-card information is not required to be sent during transactions which results in a security enhancement of the system.
