We study the problem of how a user at an untrusted terminal can generate digital signatures with the help of a smart card. This problem may arise in many practical applications; an example would be a user generating an electronic check at a merchant's terminal in a shop. The danger is that the terminal can obtain a signature from the card on an arbitrarily chosen document, that is different from the one displayed on the screen and confirmed by the user. We propose a solution to this problem which is based on a new concept called conditional signature. This leads to a new paradigm where digital signatures are not considered as non-repudiable proofs, at least until a short deadline.

The next wave of information systems to be deployed over wide-area networks features data sources residing on handheld devices, laptops, and other types of small-sized devices. Therefore, it is necessary to have middleware systems for data and resource integration that efficiently integrate clients and data sources residing on PDAs, laptops, embedded systems, and enterprise machines that are spread over a WAN. In this paper, we give an overview of the architecture of the NetTraveler system that we are building for just these purposes. We present the algorithms and schemes that we have developed to: 1) help applications self-configure with the parameters needed for their normal operations, 2) automatically register value-added services, and 3) discover connectivity metadata about available services over a cooperative system that spawns a WAN.

We propose an interdisciplinary IT security lab project which combines topics of computer architecture, cryptography and software engineering. In this lab undergraduate students of EE/CS are supposed to efficiently implement the cryptographic block cipher Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) on a smart card with an embedded Atmel ATMega163 Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microcontroller in assembly. Moreover, the students learn about side channel attacks. Side channel attacks are based on the fact that data processed by a microprocessor is generally correlated with its power consumption and electromagnetic radiation. Finally, the students learn how to secure their implementations against these attacks using software countermeasures, such as random operand blinding and dummy cycles.

In mobile computing environments, there is an implicit assumption that the server is able to broadcast consistent data to mobile clients. This assumption may not be valid. In this paper, we formulate broadcasting data at the server as a broadcast transaction which reads the entire database in a consistent way before broadcasting data in a broadcast cycle. This issue is not trivial as the broadcast transaction will create high interference to normal update transactions at the server. Some algorithms proposed by previous studies on reading the entire databases could be candidates to solving the problem. However, we found that those algorithms are inadequate in handling update transactions correctly. Hence we devise a new algorithm, called the read-white set test to resolve such problems and minimize the interference to normal update transactions during reading process of the entire database for data broadcasting.

Transmission of video data through the Internet is a time critical application. The RTP protocol is commonly used for sending and receiving multimedia (Kikuchi et al., 2000). Associated with RTP we have the RTCP protocol (Friedman et al., 2003) and the RTP retransmission protocol (Rey et al., 2003) for ensuring a certain quality of service. RTP retransmission is an end to end protocol and hence the latency associated with retransmission is high. We propose an In-network solution which uses network processors routers which can request for retransmission and also service retransmission requests. The amount of parallelism provided by network processors would serve to reduce the packet processing time. We have derived the expected number of paths traversed by a packet before it reaches the client in our method and we also discussed the design of the router on the Intel IXP network processor.

information in XML format has obvious redundancy that wastes disk space, bandwidth and disk I/O when querying XML data. For the efficiency of storage and query XML, it is necessary to compress XML data. In this paper, XCpaqs, a compression technology of XML, is presented. XCpaqs separates XML document into structure and context information. At the same time, it keeps homomorphism relation between compressed and original XML document. XCpaqs encodes tag and path respectively. It makes parts of XPath query could be processed in main memory. XCpaqs can recognize data types and uses different encode strategy to compress data with different type. This feature makes the technology support XML documents without schema information. Therefore, XCpaqs is adaptive for XML warehouse, which stores XML documents gathered from internet with various schemas. The technology of query execution on XML data compressed by XCpaqs is also presented.

The evolution of the World Wide Web has brought us enormous amounts of information for business and research use. Design and implementation of an automated system for Web data mining has become important for companies wishing to utilize useful information from the Web. We attempt to describe confidence on approximate queries on large datasets, which is done in the context of an automated system for Web data mining. The system has been designed to identify, extract, filter, and analyze data from Web resources. An approach to evaluating the quality of extracted Web data is also discussed. This is an exploratory study of Web data retrieval and Web data analysis.

Content based labels, associated with image sequences in contemporary video indexing methods, can be textual, numerical as well as abstract, including colour-histograms and motion co-occurrence matrices. Abstract features or indices are not explicitly numeric entities but rather are composed of numeric entities. When multiple abstract features are involved, distance metrics between image sequences need to be weighted. Most feature weighting methods in the literature assume that the space is numeric (either discrete or continuous) and so not applicable to abstract feature weighting. This paper elaborates some feature weighting methods applicable to abstract features and both binary (feature selection) and real-valued weighting methods are discussed. The performance of different feature selection and weighting methods are provided and a comparative study based on motion classification-experiments is presented.

In spatial resolution reduction transcoding, the original resolution of the incoming frames is reduced to a lower resolution in the outgoing frames. In the reduced resolution the motion vector of every macroblock needs to be calculated from the corresponding four macroblock of the original frame. Instead of reestimating these motion vectors, a number of techniques recompose these vectors using the incoming information to reduce computational complexity. Many techniques utilize the quantized DCT coefficients of residual blocks for composing the invalid vectors. This paper proposes a new motion vector composition technique by normalizing the low frequency DCT coefficients with the visual quantization matrix (VQM) derived from the study of human visual system (HVS). Simulation results show that the performance of this modified technique is better compared to other similar techniques.

This study explores using keywords to automatically generate hyperlinks for large sets of reference materials. A content analysis was performed and the results indicate that keywords seem to be closely associated with manually generated hyperlinks. Two prototypes were developed, differing in whether the keywords were manually generated by the author, or mechanically extracted by an automatic process. In both prototypes, different types of intra-document and inter-document links were generated. A preliminary evaluation on the first prototype (which was based on manually identified keywords) shows that this prototype system holds promise for further exploration. In the second prototype, keywords were automatically extracted with Oracle Text gist/theme generation tools. Although the automatically extracted keywords were different from those identified by authors, there was a significant overlap between the set of links generated by each prototype. The next step will be testing the usefulness of this automatic approach with a thorough user evaluation.
