Emerging high bandwidth wireless infrastructure such as WiFi and Bluetooth networks make possible mobile applications that involve automated "conversations" between mobile devices and other land-based systems. By automated is meant that communication does not necessarily require human initiation or intervention. Such applications have been previously economically unviable on GSM/GPRS networks due to the costs per call and/or per data volume and technically challenging as providing for run-time flexibility in such communication poses semantic encoding difficulties. Nevertheless such applications are particularly well suited to mobile device interfaces, which have input and display limitations, as they minimize the required level of human user input. In this paper we propose a two-tier architecture for simple database-centric mobile applications, capable of such automated communication, that uses polymorphism to achieve run-time flexibility.

This paper proposes a model for interleaving the execution of multiple queries simultaneously. The queries are rewritten, in the context of each other, in order to induce common subexpressions (CSEs). A CSE will then need to be evaluated once only and its result is used in the evaluation of the queries that contain it, thereby leading to cost saving over the conventional query-at-a-time scenario. Two important aspects characterize the proposed model. First, it rewrites the queries in such a way that the isolated CSEs are, themselves, heuristically efficient to evaluate during query execution. Second, it reduces the optimization overhead (due to query rewriting) by using a divide-and-conquer approach to deduce relationships among inter-query selection conditions on base relations while using only pattern matching to find relationships among higher-order subexpressions (those involving an arbitrary number of joins).

The intrusion detection system architecture commonly used in commercial and research systems have a number of problems that limit their configurability, scalability or efficiency. In this paper, two machine-learning paradigms, artificial neural networks and fuzzy inference system, are used to design an intrusion detection system. SNORT is used to perform real time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP network during the training phase of the system. Then a signature pattern database is constructed using protocol analysis and neuro-fuzzy learning method. Using 1998 DARPA Intrusion Detection Evaluation Data and TCP dump raw data, the experiments are deployed and discussed.

In recent years, frameworks are very popular as they provide reusable solutions to very difficult problems. However, the number of frameworks for a given domain makes it difficult to select the most appropriate framework. Selecting the wrong framework or selecting a framework that has not yet matured can be disastrous for a project. The choice of an application framework can make or break a project. Unfortunately, the lack of formal criteria and metrics to objectively compare/contrast frameworks, assess the framework's capabilities, and determine the framework's suitability to a particular project, make framework selection extremely difficult. Very little research has been conducted on determining the suitability of a framework. This paper defines criteria that can be used at a high-level to understand a framework's overall usefulness and at a low-level to understand the framework's suitability to a particular domain. The defined criteria of our approach are then used to determine the suitability of using an example framework.

New and emerging applications can change the mix of operations commonly used within computer architectures. It is sometimes surprising when instruction-set architecture (ISA) innovations intended for one purpose are used for other (initially unintended) purposes. We consider recent proposals for the processor support of families of bit-level permutations. From a processor architecture point of view, the ability to support very fast bit-level permutations may be viewed as a further validation of the basic word-orientation of processors, and their ability to support next-generation secure multimedia processing. However, bitwise permutations are also fundamental operations in many cryptographic primitives and we discuss the suitability of these new operations for cryptographic purposes.

Many information sources provide their database contents through query interfaces. Hidden Web sites are typical examples. In most cases, their database contents change dynamically, with new documents on emerging topics being appended. In applications like topic detection and trend analysis, we want to discover newly emerging contents in the databases. It is very difficult, however, for ordinary users to detect them through only query interfaces, without support by database contents administrators. In this paper, we propose a novel method to automatically discover such contents. The proposed method generates biased query probes to be issued to a hidden Web site with a keyword-based query interface. The probes focus on extracting documents on newly emerging topics. We evaluate effectiveness with experiments.

Personalization recommendation is a valid method for lightening the user's burden on information retrieval. In order to implement personalization recommendation for text information retrieval (TR), user-focus is defined and algorithms for the construction of user-focus are given in this paper. The construction of user-focus for a user depends on his entire query requests at a period of time. Each query request of the user is treated as a transaction between TR system and him. Items in a transaction are non-noise words in the query request corresponding with the transaction. Each item is weighted with a value to measure the importance of the item for the user. Weighted frequent itemset is used for the user-focus's construction. In order to mine weighted frequented itemset fast, an algorithm named as WeightedFP is presented. The experimental result shows that the implementation of personalization recommendation based on user-focus can lighten the user's burden caused by the work of filtering valid information from vast information in some degree while time requirement of TR is satisfied well.

Regarding the overall speed and power consumption, cryptographic applications in embedded environments like PDAs or mobile communication devices can benefit from specially designed cryptosystems with fixed parameters. In this contribution, we propose a highly efficient algorithm/or a hyperelliptic curve cryptosystem (HECC) of genus two, well suited for these applications on constrained devices. This work presents a major improvement of HECC arithmetic for certain nonsupersingular curves defined over fields of characteristic two. We optimized the group doubling operation and managed to speed up the whole cryptosystem by approximately 27% compared to the previously known most efficient case. Furthermore, an actual implementation of the new formulae on an embedded processor shows its practical relevance. A scalar multiplication can be performed in approximately 50ms on an 80MHz embedded device.

Emerging wireless infrastructure such as WiFi and Bluetooth networks make possible mobile applications that allow employees to carry out business computing tasks while not at a fixed computer and while at varying locations. One particular mobile enterprise use-case involves a worker such as a consultant who is visiting multiple branches of the same enterprise or visiting multiple enterprises and who needs to access electronic business records at each of these locations. Business records can be large and have a complex structure making their access from a mobile device somewhat intractable given device and bandwidth limitations. In this paper we propose an object-oriented database-based architecture for mobile enterprise applications that uses the object-oriented schema of the data itself to auto-generate an interface for accessing business records incrementally on mobile devices. This architecture hence provides a way to access large business records from mobile devices by natively supporting incremental retrieval and accessing of the records.

This paper presents a novel method for pixel-wise correspondence between 3D face images. The method is based on uniform gridded-resampling of different 3D faces and advances a particular even-partition procedure including uniform face segmentation and iso-curves initialization for correspondence. Pixel-wise correspondence between 3D face images is the basis of a 3D face model, which is capable of analyzing novel face images. Pixel-wise correspondence (which can also be called point-to-point correspondence) between 3D prototypes is currently based mainly on several algorithms derived from optical flow. Using a series of examples, our approach has shown its advantages and been proved to be promising for pixel-wise correspondence between 3D face images.
