Frequency of attacks on Web services and resulting damage continue to grow as Web services become popular. Unfortunately, existing signature-based intrusion detection techniques are inadequate in providing reasonable degree of Web security. Web attacks are diverse in nature, and typical Web architecture consists of complex and hierarchically organized components. Because attack strategies often vary depending on the Web contents, it is impossible to develop fixed patterns capturing unknown attacks. Protection mechanisms such as anomaly-based intrusion detection and application-level IDS, tailored to Web services, are needed to detect Web attacks. The first step in developing Web application IDS is to analyze and categorize possible Web attacks and vulnerabilities. In this paper, we classify Web attacks by analyzing the root causes and the locations where they occur. This research is useful in developing Web IDS modules, tracking emerging trends on Web attacks, and testing Web applications against potential vulnerabilities.

Traditionally backup has been performed on tapes. With the price of disk becoming cheaper and CPUs becoming faster, the use of disk-based network backup system to replace or augment tape-based backup becomes realistic. More interestingly, random access nature of disks allows redundancy of data to be taken into consideration for more efficient network transmissions and data storage at the backup system. In this paper, we consider the type of redundancy that can be exploited and study different types of compression techniques suitable to achieve improved network efficiency and storage efficiency during the backup. One form of redundancy we exploit is the similarities between different versions. Such efficiencies are never before achievable using tape-based solutions. We also implemented a working disk-based network backup system called "A-Backup system", which applies the technologies discussed in the paper. Such a system is capable of achieving over l0x compression in both network utilization and data storage during backup.

In this paper, we propose a fast infra-prediction mode selection method for JVT video coding standard H.264. Based on local edge information obtained by calculating edge feature parameters, the method can reduce the computational complexity considerably while maintaining similar PSNR and bit rate. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Nowadays relational database schemas are designed by using well-known database design techniques such as the entity relationship model and the normalization process. The result schemas can be guaranteed to have minimum redundancies if the fifth normal form (5NF) is achieved. However, in more recent database schema design such as the design of object database schema, the concern about minimum redundancies does not seem to be an important issue. Functional dependencies may still appear in an object class of the class diagram thus introduce update anomalies. This article first presents the use of NIAM, a well-established conceptual schema model, as a conceptual model for the design of object databases. A transformation from a NIAM to an OODB schema with minimum redundancy is presented. The conceptual schema can also be transformed into Extensible Markup Language (XML) which is originally a language for document management. However, it now gains popularity in database representation. It is particularly useful as a data format when an application must communicate with another application. This article also presents the NIAM conceptual schema model as a conceptual design tool for XML schema. A software tool that allows users to create NIAM schemas and generate object and XML schemas is developed.

Most XML-enabled database management systems can only translate a few relations into an XML document. Moreover, the translation is without data semantics constraints consideration, which may not be sufficient for information highway on the Web. The demand on database is increased in e-commerce. Not only relational database (RDB) is needed for traditional data processing, but also its equivalent XML documents (database) are needed for B2B applications. Therefore, performance for online conversion from relational data to XML document is an issue. This paper aims to create a replicate XML database for a company's RDB to improve database performance, and to automate XML database recovery in case of system failures. For any successful update to the RDB, corresponding update will be applied to its replicate XML database. The result is an incrementally maintained XML database for efficient and effective computing for e-commerce. In summary, Internet computing performance can be improved because a replicate XML database and its counterpart RDB can be parallel processing for both internal data and external data transmission on the Internet. Furthermore, an XML database can be recovered by its counterpart RDB once it is down.

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are responsible for monitoring and analyzing host or network activity to detect intrusions in order to protect information from unauthorized access or manipulation. There are two main approaches for intrusion detection: signature-based and anomaly-based. Signature-based detection employs pattern matching to match attack signatures with observed data making it ideal for detecting known attacks. However, it cannot detect unknown attacks for which there is no signature available. Anomaly-based detection uses machine-learning techniques to create a profile of normal system behavior and uses this profile to detect deviations from the normal behavior. Although this technique is effective in detecting unknown attacks, it has a drawback of a high false alarm rate. In this paper, we describe our anomaly-based IDS designed for detecting malicious use of cryptographic and application-level protocols. Our system has several unique characteristics and benefits, such as the ability to monitor cryptographic protocols and application-level protocols embedded in encrypted sessions, a very lightweight monitoring process, and the ability to react to protocol misuse by modifying protocol response directly.

The applications like situation assessment, object tracking, trading & stock control, and workflow management require actions to be taken in stringent time frame for full benefit of the system. These applications also require identifying the occurrence of desired event, to take appropriate action when an event of interest is found to have occurred while maintaining timing constraints. Active database with ECA rule provides the mechanism to capture the different database events and provide timely response but do not guarantee timely processing of real time transactions because of their inability to express time constraints explicitly. Most of the time constrained real life application requires both active and real time characteristics. Long duration transactions with explicit time constraints are more vulnerable to failures and they are subject to heavy compensations in case of aborts. The paper intends to investigate the construct required for modelling of transactions with timing constraints, cooperation semantics and run time monitoring of these constraints in active database.

One of the major concerns with supervised learning approaches to text classification is that they require a large number of labeled examples to achieve a high level of effectiveness. Labeling such a large number of examples poses a considerable burden on human experts. Two common approaches to reduce the amount of labeled examples required are: (1) selecting informative uncertain examples for human-labeling and (2) using many inexpensive unlabeled data with a small number of labeled examples. While previous work in text classification focused only on one approach, we investigate a framework to combine both approaches in similarity-based text classification. By applying our new thresholding strategy (RinSCut) to uncertainty sampling, we propose a new framework which automatically selects informative uncertain data that should be presented to human expert for labeling and positive-certain data that are directly used for learning without human-labeling. With our similarity-based learning algorithm (KAN), experiments have been conducted on Reuters-21578 data set. Our proposed scheme has been compared with random sampling and previous conventional uncertainly sampling, based on micro and macroaveraged F/sub 1/. The results showed that if both macro and microaveraged measures are concerned, the optimal choice might be our framework.

Decision tree (DT) induction is regarded as a representative of traditional approaches to classification rule mining which is an important technique for many data mining applications. Using a heuristic-based local search, DT induction appends attribute at a time to rules in the order of goodness. This method may eliminate some typical structures that several attributes collectively determine the class. Recently, there has been growing interest in the problem of discovering functional dependencies (FDs) from existing databases [[Flach et al.], [Y. Huhtala et al., (1999)], [Lopes et al.], [Novelli et al.]]. Some efficient and scalable algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we present a new method to build a DT classifier using approximate FDs [Y. Huhtala et al., (1999)]. The new method is different from the traditional ways of building DTs in that it searches composite attributes for individual node of a DT which leads to substantially smaller and more understandable DTs without adversely affecting the accuracy gains. Experiments showed that the new method not only builds more accurate classifiers, but also does this with more compact structures.

Managing the large amount of learning content involved in the development of an expandable learning management system (LMS) is a critical task for most educational organizations. In designing such a system, consideration must be given not only to the requirement of instructors and students, but also to the adaptive qualities of the system itself, because of the rapidly changing software environment. Unlike most enterprises, educational organization can't afford high system maintenance. Development of a flexible, expandable and reliable learning management system is, therefore, imperative. This paper proposes a Web service oriented framework in building a sharable content object reference model (SCORM) compatible LMS. We integrated the SCORM concept with distributed computing technologies to build the components of the LMS and demonstrate how these services can be configured to create a complete system. This framework increases reusability and reduces the maintenance requirements of the LMS. It provides a way for small educational organizations, with limited resources, to build a complete SCORM compatible LMS. In such an ideal situation, the content provider not only provides the content, but also the service for the consumers of that content.
