In this paper, an efficient block size mode selection algorithm for the variable-sizes block-matching (VSBM) in the MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding is presented. Depending on leveraging the available motion information carried by the MPEG-2 bit-streams, the proposed algorithm is used to determine which one of the 16×6, 16×8, 8×16, and 8×8 block size modes should be used for each macroblock (MB). The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is close to that of a cascaded pixel-domain transcoder (CPDT) when all the seven block size modes are enabled and the exhaustively full search method is used to determine the best block size modes. The whole transcoding time can be efficiently reduced by 22% on the average while the bit rate is slightly increased (2.9%).

The classification of human gene sequences into exons and introns is an important but difficult problem. We study the discriminative power of various statistical features (22 in total) in term of their mutual information (MI). By performing correlation analysis, we are able to identify a set of features that has high MI value while at the same time is complementary in their information content. Using the set of features, which consists of the three SZ features, the AMI feature, and the first stop codon feature, we are able to achieve classification accuracy as high as 92%.

Space-Time coding and MIMO wireless systems are two recent technological breakthroughs in modern communications. The promises of information theoretic MIMO analysis has ignited the study of related areas such as MIMO channel modeling, Space-Time coding, Space-Time signal processing, etc. One of the most popular models because of its simplicity is the Kronecker mode1. In this paper we analyze the Alamouti coding scheme and study the impact of antenna correlation for this scheme using BPSK modulation and a 2 x 2 MIMO channeI. The MIMO Kronecker model was used in the simulation for various spatial correlation factors and the associated Doppler shifts in each branch. The results in this paper are new in this context and have not been found elsewhere.

Intra-prediction is a widely used technique in intra coding. In H.264, nine directional prediction modes are used, and in AVS (audio-video coding standard of China), six modes are used. The paper proposes a multiple mode, intra-prediction scheme to achieve a better balance between prediction precision and side information cost. Three kinds of additional modes are introduced to increase prediction precision from different aspects. A significant performance gain can be achieved using this multiple mode intra-prediction, with little complexity increase.

Based on local edge information obtained by calculating edge feature parameters, the method can reduce the computational complexity considerably while maintaining similar PSNR and bit rate. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method

Compressed domain image processing techniques are becoming increasingly important. Compressed domain retrieval allows the calculation of image features and hence content-based image retrieval (CBIR) to be performed directly on the compressed data without the need for decoding it beforehand. The colour visual pattern image coding (CVPIC) technique represents a compression algorithm where the compressed form is directly meaningful. Based on CVPIC, we introduce a compressed domain retrieval algorithm that makes immediate use of the fact that colour and pattern information is readily available in the CVPIC domain. Colour features are exploited by building a block co-occurance matrix of colour indices while shape information is represented through pattern histograms. Combining these two types of descriptors results in an efficient and effective image retrieval method that even outperforms popular pixel-based algorithms such as colour histograms, colour coherence vectors and colour correlograms.

A mobile walkthrough environment based on 3D superview warping and view compensation streaming is presented. In the environment, 3D views are rendered on the remote clients using 3D oversized reference views and compensated on a view-on-demand basis by the graphically rendered views from the server. The view compensations (hole residuals and the depth map) are coded using a layered joint source-channel coding with unequal error corrections to protect the significant packets on noisy and erasure mobile channels. The new compensated view will then serve as a reference view for the subsequent rendering on the clients

We propose a secure video authentication algorithm that is tolerant to visual degradation due to MPEG lossy compression to a designed level. The authentication process generates a tag that is sent with video data and the level of protection can be adjusted so that longer tags are used for higher security, and that the protection is distributed such that higher security is provided for regions of interest in the image. The computation required for authentication and verification can be largely performed as part of MPEG compression and so generation and verification of the tag can be integrated into the compression system. Calculation of the tag can be parallelized and so made fast

When considering mobile communication systems we see that for services which can tolerate delay do not need to maintain a minimum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). In fact, to achieve maximum throughput transmission power should be increased when the interference level is low, and information transmission rate adjusted accordingly through adaptive modulation and coding. This approach is called opportunistic communications. In this paper, we introduce an opportunistic power control algorithm, which exploits the channel fluctuation of wireless channels. The algorithm is distributed and is proven to converge to a unique fixed point. Simulation results show that a significant increase in system capacity can be achieved, when compared with the traditional target tracking approach.
