With the development of bioinformatics, it is a valuable subject to study the biological sequence on the protein aspect with the computer based on the threshold of encoding 20 kinds of amino acids, because many biological phenotype characters, gene regulating control network are determined by amino acids sequence. It is feasible to analyze genetic signals in amino acid sequences because there are already a lot of mature information process systems. This work makes use of similarity rule, complementary rule, molecular recognition theory, and information theory to set up a model of digital coding for amino acids. The model reflects better amino acid chemical physical properties and degeneracy. It transforms the symbolic DNA sequences into digital genetic signals of amino acids and offers the possibility to utilize cellular automata. Correspondingly, it opens the possibility to apply a whole range of powerful signal processing methods for analysis of amino acids.

The major signal in protein coding regions of genomic sequences is f=1/3 periodicity; some methods such as FFT-based methods, autocorrelation, mutual information function, etc., which exploit this phenomenon, rapidly lose effectiveness in the case of small DNA sequences when attempting to detect 3-periodicity. The paper proposes an AR technique as an alternative tool for this purpose, due to its improved coding region resolution for small data records. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the detection resolution for the AR technique is higher than that of Fourier methods for small DNA sequences. The sequence length and structure are the main factors that affect performance of any detection method. However, AR methods are more robust against variations in these factors. Unlike neural net-based methods, no a priori knowledge of the sequences is required. Hence, the AR technique appears to be a useful tool for 3-periodicity (including other periodicities), repeat and regulatory regions of unknown genomic sequences, especially small genomic sequence.

The short utterance speaker recognition is necessary and convenient to ensure proper access to private information, personal transactions, and security of computer and communication networks. The performance of the traditional speaker recognition in mobile telecommunication environments, such as cellular, PDA and telephone environments, degrade seriously because of the coding effect in the telecommunication, which impair the speaker's feature information. So some work needed to be done to improve the recognition performance in the mobile applications. In order to achieve better results in cellular and telephone environments, the paper proposes a two-stage decision for short utterance speaker identification. And the paper evaluated the method in our SRMC (speaker recognition for mobile communication) corpus.

In this paper, we propose a new representation of DNA sequences, which constructs the word frequency vector with multiple resolutions based on the chaos game representation. Compared with the traditional vector, it combines a range of resolutions and reserves higher resolutions, but the dimension is reduced greatly relatively. The algorithm is detailed, which calculates coding format and codes each sequence. To evaluate the significance of our method, we represent Alu sequences by our proposed coding format. After that, the acquired vectors are used to train BP neural networks to recognize the Alu sequences. The experimental results show that this representation of DNA sequences is significant and efficient in biological data processing.

This paper is concerned with transporting video information via multihop mobile ad-hoc channels. The major problem with transmitting real-time video information over these channels is the issue of link reliability. To improve the quality of the video reception we propose a cross layer feedback control mechanism that can allow the application layer to adapt itself to a dynamically changing network topology. We also present packet transmission strategies capable of recovering video signals under long bursts of packet drops, typical of a route change condition. This feedback control scheme has been developed for transmission of RTP/UDP/IP packets using the emerging H.264/AVC video-coding standard.

SAR (synthesis aperture radar) generates huge amounts of data which may easily exhaust the available capacity of downlink or storage device of the spaceborne SAR system. So there are special interests in SAR image compression. Common methods suffer from "ringing" effect at very low bit-rate when using wavelet codec: as a result poor quality is achieved. Our approach uses a Gaussian filter as a low-pass filter, which not only acts as a despeckle tool, but also makes the image signal smooth enough so that it can be compressed at very low bit-rate with little ring bell artifacts. Then the image can be encoded with familiar wavelet codec such as JPEG2000. At the decode side, we apply a Wiener filter to act as a post-process which restore important edge information. The experiment results present on RADARSAT images show good visual qualify at 0.25 bpp.

With the rise of high-speed communication channels a need for new, more efficient video stream compression algorithms has appeared. These algorithms involve both image filtering and segmentation. These tasks can be efficiently solved using the Hough transform. Preliminary sample smoothing is needed for Hough transform stability. Generally, the smoothing level is not given in advance. So, a parameter fitting scheme should be used. However, that leads to multiple calculations of the Hough transform. We show that a smoothing transform in the Hough space exists, which is equivalent to preliminary sample smoothing. Such a scheme is much more efficient.

In this paper, we study the computational complexity of the intra prediction module for video coding software according to H.264/AVC standard. We analyze separately the complexity of each intra mode for the implementation on TMS320C64 platform. The intra prediction unit consists of predicting the block's pixels from their neighbors according to different directional modes (horizontal, vertical, ...) and others non-directional (DC, planar). For each mode, we compute the number of the executional sub-units (add, shift, load, store...). Together with the number of necessary cycles to execute every instruction and the functional units that can perform these instructions, we can deduce the complexity of every intra mode. To estimate the total complexity of the intra prediction process, we assume that the encoder tests all intra modes. The total cycle's account is estimated by multiplying the number of cycles of each mode by the number of blocks in the picture. Our results indicate that our methodology for the complexity analyses of the intra prediction unit of the H.264/AVC provides a good approximation with respect to the experimental results.

We propose an error concealment algorithm for JPEG2000 image transmissions over unreliable channels. Firstly, the local principal edge information in the damaged area is detected in the spatial domain. Then the proposed orthogonal edge directed filters (OEDFs) are applied to remove the ring or ripple artifact errors due to the loss of some wavelet transform (WT) bitplane data. Two kinds of constraints in WT domain are used for rectifying the recovered WT coefficients obtained from OEDFs, namely the WT known-value constraint and the empirical statistical constraint of the WT coefficients. Finally, this filtering-and-rectifying procedure is iterated until convergent. Simulation results have shown that both objective and subjective image quality have been improved by our proposed algorithm.

Key frame selection is the process to select the most representative frames of a long video sequence. The paper describes a new algorithm for determining key frames in a video shot. We use macroblock (MB) type and motion vector information of MPEG compressed video to determine the local maxima of visual content change in a shot, i.e. the frames that are most noticeable to the viewer. This algorithm exploits the important cue of the intensity of motion activity and visual content change within a shot from the corresponding MB type and motion vector characteristics. The advantages of this algorithm are the efficient extraction of the required information in the MPEG compressed domain with low complexity VLC decoding and high accuracy. Results show that the proposed algorithm can successfully select the key frames that are sufficient to represent a shot
