Existing information retrieval methods are mainly based on either term similarity or latent semantics. To reduce irrelevant information searched, this paper presents a new approach for information retrieval by applying methodology of association rules mining to a text database. Association semantics among terms of a document and a query are considered, such that the semantic similarity between the document and query may be reduced if they are somewhat irrelevant.

To remedy this lack of study, IEEE Computer Society has attempted, lately, to define Software Engineering processes. It is the author's opinion that it is the System Architect role that should have been studied and articulated rather than the detailed processes. It is recommended that the SWEBOK process be refocused to further define the role.

As large main memory becomes more and more available at reasonable prices, processing speed of large data sets becomes more important than reducing main memory usage of internal data structures which are small compared to the available main memory capacity. In this paper we describe the use of a finite state machine for fast processing of prefix codes that significantly improves decoding performance in practice, and that is easy to implement. We present an intuitive explanation of this method, an extension to discover symbol boundaries in compressed data, implementation details, and we also provide experimental performance results.

This paper develops and studies interactive techniques for recovery from transmission errors that occur in facsimile images compressed with Group 3, Extended 2 Dimensional MMR coding scheme. When an error occurs in an MMR coded bitstream, the bitstream cannot be decoded after the error point. To prevent losing all information after an error, we develop standalone and interactive error recovery systems that utilize syntactical structure information of the coded bitstream to recover nearly all the data. The standalone recovery works well on text documents or regular graphics, but cannot handle more complex document structures. Interactive recovery, using feedback from a user, can recover from errors in a wide range of document types.

information retrieval is the selection of documents relevant to a query. Inverted index is the conventional way to store the index of the collection. Because of the large amounts of data, compression techniques are commonly used in information retrieval systems to reduce the size of the inverted index. We experimentally evaluate the result of the mapping of such techniques on the Compressed Sparse Row (CSR) information retrieval (IR). Our experimental results, using some of these compression techniques such as Elias Gamma, Golomb, Interpolative, and fixed length Byte-Aligned, demonstrate that such techniques can easily be applied to compress the index in CSR IR.

The Web information space is rapidly growing in the size and the diversity of both its data and its audience. A consequence is that Web information Systems (WIS) in many applications replace existing traditional (not Web based) information systems. Since the nature of WIS differs from the nature of traditional information systems there is a strong demand for design methodologies specifically oriented towards WIS design. The complexity of WIS implies the need for an effective design process and a rigorous and systematic design approach. We argue that besides the quality of the navigation that is typical for Web (hypermedia) data also the adaptation of the presented content is a desired feature of a modern WIS. In this paper we briefly describe the navigation and adaptation design in selected WIS design methodologies, RMM, OOHDM, UWE, and particulary Hera.
