Security is a major concern in mobile commerce where information is sent over the air. Authentication is possibly the most important property since achieving privacy and integrity may have no sense without the guaranty of the receiver identity. We propose a mobile architecture for strong personal authentication using mobile devices (cellular phones or PDAs) and wireless personal area networks (WPAN) like Bluetooth. The mobile device stores private information and performs cryptographic operations while WPAN connects mobile devices with access points. The risk of insecure wireless networks inclusion is studied and solved using suitable authentication protocols.

As mobile devices become more powerful and common there will a greater capacity and need for more complex interactions between mobile device-resident software and other server-based software. This can be termed mobile application integration. Mobile computing introduces new opportunities and challenges for application integration. Some of the challenges include small device size, limited bandwidth, limited processing power and lack of integration protocol support. Ad-hoc networks are those that can be formed temporarily while particular devices are in the vicinity of each other and ad-hoc mobile application integration refers to the temporary integration of software modules across devices while such a network exists. This case poses even greater challenges for integration such as dynamically changing combinations of platforms to be integrated across and a requirement for integration to occur dynamically. This paper proposes a novel Web Services-based system that allows such dynamic and temporary integration to occur in ad-hoc mobile networks.

The document representation is an important aspect of both information retrieval and information extraction. In this paper the bag of words representation of documents is enriched with Lexical, Conceptual and Contextual relationships. In order to effectively represent and inference with this representation, a mathematical model is required. In this work, the enhanced interrelated set of bag of words that is semantically lattice of words is represented using description logic. The conceptual taxonomy extracted using WordNet can be represented naturally using DL. The DL also provides consistency, satisfiability, instance checking, subsumption services to semantically extend the initial enhanced lattice of words. The contextual knowledge can be extracted by syntactic patterns, dependency relations and heuristics. Tourist and Sports domains are taken for the implementation of this work. This knowledge extracted and represented can be used in applications like information retrieval and information extraction.

Advancements in communications technology and communications services have triggered a global appetite for bandwidth. This appetite contributes to an increasing bandwidth demand that can only be met with a new optical technology known as dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). This technology has appealed to graduate students manifested by an enrollment increase in telecommunications. What makes DWDM possible is photonic technology that is based on principles of solid state physics, optics, and photonics. Although such courses are taught in a physics curriculum, currently they are not considered core courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering. For the first time, physics, photonic technology and communications networks need to be aligned and sequenced to a comprehensive optical communications curriculum. In this paper, we describe the teaching philosophy of Optical Networking for the TCOM graduate program of the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa.

The rate at which information is produced in today's world is mind-boggling. The information is changing by every minute and today's corporate mantra is not "knowledge is power" but "Timely knowledge is power". Millions of Dollars are won or lost, due to information or lack of it. Business executives and corporate managers push their technology managers to provide information at the right time in the right form. They want information on the go and want to be connected all the time to the Internet or their corporate network. The rapid advancement of technology in the field of miniaturization and that of communications has introduced a lot of roaming devices for people to connect through to the network like laptop, PDA, mobile phones and many embedded devices. Programming for these devices were cumbersome and limited since each device supported their own standard I/O ports, screen resolution and had specific configurations. The introduction of Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) has solved this problem to some extent. J2ME is divided into configuration and profiles, which provide specific information to a group of related devices. Mobile phones can be programmed using J2ME. If the mobility offered by the cellular phones combined with Electrical Engineering many new uses can be found out for existing electrical machines. It will also enable remote monitoring of electrical machines and the various parameters involved in Electrical Engineering.

Block matching algorithms (BMA) have been widely used as standard motion estimation (ME) techniques in video. coding practice. In this paper, we present an iterative but analytical motion estimation algorithm with attractive computational efficiency. Our work can be viewed as generalization of the celebrated work of Lucas and Kanade [1] on iterative image registration into the wavelet space. We will demonstrate that block-based motion estimation can be performed efficiently in a coarse-to-fine fashion by propagating the estimate across the scale in the wavelet space. Our solution often takes a fraction of the computations required by the conventional BMA methods and reaches comparable MSE performance of prediction residues (fractional-pel motion accuracy is achieved due to the analytical nature of the proposed scheme). In spite of the iteration in the proposed scheme, it converges fast especially with a good initial estimate passed on from the low resolution. Our new ME scheme is particularly useful to the speed-up of implementing a new class of wavelet-based scalable video coders.

A novel public audio watermarking scheme based on the statistical feature manipulation in wavelet domain combined with error correction coding technique is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is shown to be rather robust against a variety of common signal processing manipulations and synchronization attacks including the very challenging random cropping and time scale modifications. The watermarked audio has very high perceptual quality and is indistinguishable from the original signal. A blind watermark detection technique without resorting to the original signal is developed to identify the embedded watermark under various types of attacks. Security is guaranteed by applying chaotic sequence during embedding and detection. Several meaningful suggestions on how to use error correction coding technique to improve the robustness are given at the end.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) project # DUE-9950029 is aimed to help increase the pool of qualified information technology (IT) teachers and workers in the U.S. It addresses the severe national and statewide shortage of teachers and instructors in IT area. While the growth in employment of all occupations in the U.S. IT industry between 19962006 is projected at 88.25%, the growth of college/university IT and Computer Science (CS) faculty is only projected at 18.3% [1, 2]. These findings motivated faculty of several U.S. educational institutions such as Bradley University and Midstate College (both, in Peoria, IL), Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program (GREP) at Georgia Institute of technology (Savannah, GA), College of Applied Science at University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (both, in Cincinnati, OH) to propose the NSF ATE project back in 1998 and complete it by 2003. This paper reviews project goals, project faculty development's methods, evaluation of innovative courses and teaching technology and corresponding project team's findings.

TACWeb (TAC images on the Web), is a web-based Grid Portal, developed at the CACT/ISUFI laboratory of the University of Lecce for the management of biomedical images in a distributed environment. TACWeb, building on top of the Globus Toolkit, is an interactive environment that deals with complex user's requests, regarding the acquisition of biomedical data, the "processing" and "delivering" of biomedical images, using the power and security of computational grids. Recently, Grid technologies are being integrated with Web Services technologies to provide a framework for interoperable application-to-application interaction. In this paper we present an evolution of the TACWeb architecture that is compliant with the Web Services approach and its main functionalities. In such a system, the basic capabilities are encapsulated and exposed as Web Services allowing the development of new health applications as a composition of such services.

The InterLabs state-of-the-art Web-lecturing tool for online education has been designed, developed, and tested at the InterLabs Research Institute at Bradley University, Peoria, IL, as a part of the National Science Foundation's CCLI-EMD grant # 0196015 [1]. It is based on active utilization of innovative software engineering, streaming multimedia, communication, teaching, and learning and information technologies. Student formative and summative evaluations and academic performance clearly demonstrated the advantages of the innovative online courseware based on web-lecturing technology. This technology along with reusable learning objects (including SCORM, IEEE LTSC, IMS and Dublin Core standards for learning objects), multiagent technology, intelligent tutoring systems, new developments in instructional design, XML, PHP and other programming languages lead towards a new generation of virtual learning environments - open, learner-centered, knowledge-driven, intelligent, agent-based, collaborative, interactive Open Learning Environments (OLE).
