Customers are not created equal. However, segmenting customers in terms of their profitability is still an underutilized approach in marketing nowadays. Many E-commerce sites still apply the same customer care to all customers without calculating whether the expected profit from a customer is greater than the marketing cost to her or not. In this paper, a decision theoretic approach to segmenting customers based on a RFM (recency frequency and monetary) model and network value has been proposed here.

New mobile communication technologies are expected to be broadly available in the near future. Those technologies (multimedia-enabled devices and broadband access to the Internet) will enable new services involving video transmission. Service providers are likely to want the customer to pay for contents, whereas they will also want their intellectual property protected. We present a system that integrates content, fine-grain pay-per-view and copyright protection with a rich variety of multimedia output devices and transmission networks.

Recently, the importance of creating authoring support for adaptive hypermedia system design offering multimodality and personalization is becoming evident. In the process of designing such authoring support, we discovered that given the difficulty of adaptive hypermedia authoring, i.e., in designing different levels of abstraction, alternatives, multiple links, etc., it would be beneficial to also attend to the authoring needs and adapt to the author. Therefore, this paper describes for the first time an attempt of adaptation not only to the student, but also to the designer.

As large main memory becomes more and more available at reasonable prices, processing speed of large data sets becomes more important than reducing main memory usage of internal data structures which are small compared to the available main memory capacity. In this paper we describe the use of a finite state machine for fast processing of prefix codes that significantly improves decoding performance in practice, and that is easy to implement. We present an intuitive explanation of this method, an extension to discover symbol boundaries in compressed data, implementation details, and we also provide experimental performance results.

Distance learning applications provide valuable opportunities to users with disabilities. To enhance the accessibility of the distance-learning portal to vision impaired users, we utilize analytical studies on human vision to develop a visibility based adaptation algorithm. Using this adaptation the quality levels and layout of the portal is adapted to enhance the visibility, to users with various vision impairments.

This study investigates the effects of logic training, interface training, and the type of search interface on the search process. We found that limited training in basic Boolean logic was sufficient to improve performance with a simple search interface. Similar improvements were observed with the assisted search interface, even without interface training. Promoting logic training or the use of the advanced search feature would therefore benefit users of today's search engines.

With the enormous growth in networks and related technologies, a number of colleges and universities worldwide have increasingly published their course materials on their Web servers. Web sites that allow users to learn and access at their own pace are attracting the interest of Web site designers and researchers. This paper describes an online pedagogy to help students and teachers learn to handle their difficulty. It proposes some suggestions to overcome problems faced by both students and teachers/tutors. Finally, an effective Web site that is based on the suggestions is developed.

information retrieval is the selection of documents relevant to a query. The inverted index is the conventional way to store the index of the collection. Because of the large amounts of data, compression techniques are commonly used in information retrieval systems to reduce the size of the inverted index. We experimentally evaluate the result of the mapping of such techniques on the compressed sparse row (CSR) information retrieval (IR). Our experimental results, using some of these compression techniques such as Elias Gamma, Golomb, interpolative, and fixed length byte-aligned, demonstrate that such techniques can easily be applied to compress the index in CSR IR.

The Grid is an integrated infrastructure for coordinated resource sharing and problem solving in distributed environments. A main factor that will drive the development and evolution of the Grid will be the necessity to face the enormous amount of data that any field of human activity is producing at a rate never seen before. This position paper attempts to forecast the ongoing evolution of computational Grids towards what we name next-generation Grids. We describe where we are now and where, most probably, we will go in the next years, and propose a general architecture for the emerging next-generation Grid.

New guidelines for ICT curricula have recently appeared, both in Europe and the USA. New European guidelines are sponsored by the European Commission and are a consequence of the political mandate to implement the European Higher Education Area. In the USA, new guidelines proposed by ACM/IEEE are an update of previous guidelines by those institutions, basically motivated by technological change. This paper analyzes and compares the role of networking in those new guidelines and proposes a synthesis of them.
