E-commerce continues to grow but will not mature until it becomes truly mobile - information available anywhere, anytime and to anybody. Applying mobile access to computing creates both tremendous commercial opportunities and complexity. It is becoming increasingly portable, as well as convenient as wireless terminals can be installed in automobile dashboards and embedded in all manner of everyday appliances. Automobile manufacturers are beginning to offer wireless services to drivers but most in-car-communications capabilities are still basic. Two primary areas of telematics are on-board telematics (CD ROM) and call centre telematics. It is a big potential market for car manufacturers as millions of drivers spend many hours in their cars. However, the greatest challenges to the growth of mobile commerce are security and privacy issues and hence the lack of consumer confidence in mobile network security.

We present an adaptive compression environment (ACE) that uses both underlying resource performance (network and CPU) predictions and the compressibility of the data stream to perform on-the-fly compression. ACE couples technologies from computational grid computing and dynamic compilation research to predict the efficacy of using compression and to intercept and compress socket-based communication transparently. Our results show that ACE is able to accurately determine when to compress and not to compress. Over all file formats studied, ACE enables significant improvements over solely performing compression or no compression.

We determine an upper bound for the covering radius of a q-ary MacDonald code C/sub k,u/(q). Values of n/sub q/(4, d), the minimal length of a 4-dimensional q-ary code with minimum distance d is obtained for d = q/sup 2/ - 1 and q/sup 2/ - 2. These are used to determine the covering radius of C/sub 3,1/(q), C/sub 3,2/(q) and C/sub 4,2/(q).

This paper presents the design and implementation of the Bluetooth local positioning application. Positioning is based on received power levels, which are converted to distance estimates according to a simple propagation model. The extended Kalman filter computes a 3D position estimate on the basis of distance estimates. With the used Bluetooth hardware, the mean absolute error of positioning was measured to be 3.76 m. The accuracy can be improved if Bluetooth devices are able to measure received power levels more precisely.

In this paper, we investigate the development of an online expert system on diseases for the benefit of our society using today state of the art technology such as the Internet. We demonstrate an expert system of a medical information database particularly for some neurological diseases. We also plan to present for other diseases with more examples in the near future as well.

The paper develops and studies interactive techniques for recovery from transmission errors that occur in facsimile images compressed with Group 3, Extended 2 Dimensional MMR coding scheme. When an error occurs in an MMR coded bitstream, the bitstream cannot be decoded after the error point. To prevent losing all information after an error, we develop standalone and interactive error recovery systems that utilize syntactical structure information of the coded bitstream to recover nearly all the data. The standalone recovery works well on text documents or regular graphics, but cannot handle more complex document structures. Interactive recovery, using feedback from a user, can recover from errors in a wide range of document types.

Mesh networks are among the most important network topologies in massive multiprocessor parallel systems. This paper proposes a new method for calculating the connectivity probability for mesh networks, which uses thorough mathematical methods to derive the relationship between the network node failure probability and the network connectivity probability in mesh networks. The results show that practical mesh networks can remain connected with very high probability. For example, it is formally proved that when the network node failure probability is bounded by 0.12%, the mesh networks with up to forty thousand nodes remain connected with probability larger than 99%. Our methods are also useful for deriving lower bounds on the connectivity probability for other computer networks.

A novel public audio watermarking scheme based on the statistical feature manipulation in the wavelet domain combined with an error correction coding technique is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is shown to be rather robust against a variety of common signal processing manipulations and synchronization attacks including the very challenging random cropping and time scale modifications. The watermarked audio has very high perceptual quality and is indistinguishable from the original signal. A blind watermark detection technique without resorting to the original signal is developed to identify the embedded watermark under various types of attacks. Security is guaranteed by applying a chaotic sequence during embedding and detection. Several meaningful suggestions on how to use error correction coding technique to improve the robustness are given at the end.

The architecture and the current implementation of the Grid portal GENIUS (Grid Enabled Web Environment for Site Independent User Job Submission), jointly developed by INFN and NICE within the context of the INFN Grid and DataGrid projects, is presented and discussed. Particular care is devoted to the description of job submission and monitoring and to transparent access to user's data and applications.
