The concept of virtual private networks offers a simple and cheap alternative to dedicated secure networks in corporate networks and Internet environments. The choice, however, of authentication and encryption techniques and protocols affect issues such as data throughput and performance throughout the network. This paper looks into two virtual private network models within a corporate network. Two operating system platforms are implemented in this investigation; Novell Netware and Windows 2000. Performance of the two arrangements is, subsequently, analyzed and evaluated.

We present a phonetic algorithm for name searches that fuses existing techniques [the Soundex system of Russell and the techniques of J. Celko (1995) and U. Pfeifer et al.] and that introduces new features. This combination offers improved precision and recall. The described experiments assign multiple phonetic codes to each name. Counting common phonetic codes and digrams, the experiments implement the Dice coefficient to assign a similarity score between names. We use the Pfeifer corpus and relevance assessments to compare and contrast our experimental results with traditional techniques.

XML is emerging as the "universal" language for semi-structured data description/exchange, and new issues regarding the management of XML data, both in terms of performance and usability, are becoming critical. The application of knowledge-based synthesis and compression methods (i.e. derivation of synthetic views and lossless/lossy approximation of contents) can be extremely beneficial in this scenario. In this paper, we present SqueezeX, a system for the synthesis/compression of XML data based on a multidimensional/classification-based interpretation of their schema and on the application of semantic and type-oriented compression techniques.

A unified method for optimization of video coding algorithms on general-purpose processors is presented. The method consists of algorithmic, code, compiler, and SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) media Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) optimizations. H.263, H.263+ and emerging H.26L are used as example cases. For the realization of the unified method, the coding elements in all the codecs are analyzed and optimization techniques suitable for one or several of all the coding elements are presented. Results show that a nine-fold improvement can be obtained in H.26L decoding speed in terms of frames per second with video quality equivalent to a non-optimized implementation.

This paper challenges the basis of highly optimistic predictions for the growth of business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce, and a number of barriers to it are discussed. In a corporate age, when 'the customer is king', it is questioned whether Internet shopping really is what consumers 'want' or 'need'. The discussion provides a socio-technical exposition underlying this optimism and counters it by a prudent and realistic model for progress in the area of e-commerce. As a result, we suggest that, in the near future, e-commerce may mature as a steadily growing niche market - an alternative way to shop rather than the way. We suggest that the Internet will probably evolve as an all-embracing communication and information tool, rather than the 'shopping mall of the future'. A discussion on the future of B2C e-commerce is presented.

This paper presents two pieces of work which together form part of a chain of information transformation leading from engineering design models to useable hypermedia technical documentation. The building of such a chain needs to take account of two major constraints, those of efficiency of the transformation process and that of usability of the end result. The first piece of work presented here addresses the first problem by providing a means of automatically simplifying a model to a stage where it is usable as an interactive VRML document. The second piece of work addresses the second issue by investigating and prototyping novel means of presentation which provide greater 'readability' for the resultant models.

Introduces the notions of mask and multiple format for setting up a progressive access to information in an information system. Masks consist of more or less complete representations of the structure of information while multiple formats correspond to different representations available for multimedia data. We describe how these two notions are integrated into AROM, an object-based knowledge representation system which supports a UML-like formalism, by instantiating a model called PAM (Progressive Access Model). More generally, a progressive and adapted access to information can be given to users of any information system by simply adapting the PAM to the underlying data schema and coupling it with the target data or knowledge base.

Parallel execution of relational algebra operators can be performed on single computer, multiprogramming or multitasking operating systems. In doing so, time response can be improved, compared to sequential execution, using concepts of: free operators, set of free operators, and degree of freedom of operators. Parallel execution of relational algebra operators introduced, using the concepts above, can be adapted to the distributed database system environment, where each free operator executed in one specific location/computer (relatively to the other free operator of the transaction). Consequently, improvement of performance depends on: the number of free operators of the transaction; the number of sets of free operators; degree of freedom of operators; and data location relatively to the location where the operator executed.

We present a partitioning method able to manage Web log sessions. Sessions are assimilable to transactions, i.e., tuples of variable size of categorical data. We adapt the standard definition of mathematical distance used in the K-Means algorithm to represent transactions dissimilarity, and redefine the notion of cluster centroid. The cluster centroid is used as the representative of the common properties of cluster elements. We show that using our concept of cluster centroid together with Jaccard distance we obtain results that are comparable with standard approaches, but substantially improve their efficiency.

This paper presents an original information-retrieval engine, called MIRE, for integrating structured data and text. Among other things, MIRE is designed to work in a natural and efficient way with the inherent hierarchies of structured data. While multidimensional access methods have originally been developed for spatial applications, they can be successfully used to index hierarchical structured data and add to an existing information retrieval engine the capability of navigating hierarchical dimensions. To support this capability, MIRE enhances the processing algorithms of an existing multidimensional access method to avoid overflow and support for hierarchical dimensions. Compared to a search engine with multiple indexes for a different type of search, the multidimensional approach shows a significant reduction in the number of page accesses over a large document collection.
