The fusion of various retrieval strategies has long been suggested as a means of improving retrieval effectiveness. To date, testing of fusion has been done by combining result sets from widely disparate approaches that include an uncontrolled mixture of retrieval strategies and utilities. To isolate the effect of fusion on individual retrieval models, we have implemented probabilistic, vector-space and weighted Boolean models and tested the effect of fusion on these strategies in a systematic fashion. We also tested the effect of fusion on various query representations and have shown up to a 12% improvement in the average precision.

In this paper, we have considered the problem of maintaining connected components in quadtree representation of binary images when a small portion of the image undergoes change. The batch approach to re-compute the connected components information is very expensive. Our algorithms update the quadtree as well as the connected components' labeling when a homogeneous region in the quadtree is changing. The updating algorithms visit less nodes compared to the batch approach.

Applications like multimedia databases or enterprise-wide information management systems have to meet the challenge of efficiently retrieving the best-matching objects from vast collections of data. We present a new algorithm, called Stream-Combine, for processing multi-feature queries on heterogeneous data sources. Stream-Combine is self-adapting to different data distributions and to the specific kind of the combining function. Furthermore, we present a new retrieval strategy that essentially speeds up the output of relevant objects.

Multimedia presentations are difficult to handle in the existence of user interactions and complex synchronization requirements. We present a synchronization model which can handle both time-based and event-based actions. The model can cope with the VCR-type user interactions. We also give a simple rule-based synchronization specification language which does not complicate as user interactions are allowed.

We describe a mediator designed specifically for an intranet rather than an Internet. Our intranet mediator allows data reconciliation and integration to be completed long before the query is executed. This is because information about the data sources is known and a combined schema can be defined prior to the query. On the Internet, source schemas are not available so integration cannot occur before the query. In our approach, a data warehouse is used for reconciliation of structured data. We propose a new architecture and describe an initial prototype built to test the architecture.

Digital watermarking is an important emerging technique for intellectual property rights protection. We classify spread-spectrum watermarking techniques for MPEG video into two generic classes, namely spatial watermarking and DCT (discrete cosine transform) watermarking schemes, and evaluate their robustness and visual quality quantitatively and comparatively. Blind watermark detection and some watermark attacks are considered. For the two test video files considered in this study, it is observed that spatial watermarking may be preferred to DCT watermarking, as the latter tends to be less robust when both schemes are compared at the same visual quality level for the watermarked video.

Our objective is to find a theoretical watermarking capacity bound of digital images based on domain-specific masking effects. We first show the capacity of private watermarking in which the power constraints are not uniform. Then, we apply several domain-specific Human Vision System approximation models to estimate the power constraints and then show the theoretical watermarking capacity of an image in a general noisy environment. Note that we consider all pixels, watermarks and noises to be discrete values, which occur in realistic cases.

Deals with a new technique of fractal image compression based on the theory of iterated function systems (IFS) with probabilities. The theory of IFS with probabilities, in the context of image compression, is a relatively unexplored area. The rationale behind using this approach stems from the fact that it is possible to define a Markov operator associated with the probability measure whose support is the support of the given image. A new technique of fractal image compression is proposed using IFS with probabilities. The technique is found to be extremely fast in computing both the coefficients of maps and the probabilities. Thus, the proposed technique provides a very fast fractal-based image compression encoding.

The convergence of multimedia applications, which include such diverse sources as video, audio and computer data, places harsh demands on the communications process. Source coding is an important step in the communications process. A good source-coding scheme is characterized by its high efficiency in removing redundancy inherent in the information source. It should also ensure data integrity and be suitable for different data types. Codeword synchronization is an important aspect of any data communications system, whether it is a wireline or wireless system. Traditionally, block codes are used for source coding to reduce uncertainties in synchronization. The authors propose the application of minimal sync-delay T-codes for information source coding. The aim is to facilitate widespread deployment of efficient codes that also have intrinsically strong synchronizing performance.

An efficient algorithm is presented to label the connected components in an array representation of 2D images. A new data structure is suggested to maintain the equivalence table that makes use of a modified version of union-find algorithms. The operations supported by the equivalence table enable aggressive reuse of labels and (lower) bound the size of the table to [N/2]+1 for an N/spl times/N image. It is also shown that the maintenance of the table has an overall linear amortized cost.
