We report on the performance of an optimized parallel channel coder for high-speed optical transmission systems. The coding properties are discussed by an evaluation of the signal statistics of the coded pulse train in the time and frequency domain. The discussion is mainly based on the results for the power spectral density (PSD) and the autocorrelation function (AKF). The theoretical investigations have been verified measurements with a developed 2.488 Gbit/s optical transmission system. Reliability studies have shown a system's bit error rate below 10/sup -13/.

For an end-to-end media streaming system, the Internet can be considered a back box in the middle that connects a client at one end to the server at the other end. We present both ends' views of the streaming problems and review two approaches to these problems. The first approach, which is represented by scalable coding, is reactive in nature because it seeks to best adapt to changing network conditions such as bandwidth fluctuation and packet loss. The reactive approach is helpful in keeping a steam uninterrupted and proving a graceful degradation, but offers no guarantee on quality of the streamed content and does not help solve server-side problems such as scalability. The other approach is proactive and has motivated recent development in content delivery network. We show that a content delivery network helps improve quality and scalability of streaming, and can be complemented with a reactive approach like scalable coding.

Global Search is a World Wide Web agent which integrates and enhances many well-known search techniques in order to improve the quality of information gathered from the usual Web search engines. It features intelligent merging of relevant documents from different search engines, anticipated adaptive exploration and evaluation of links from the current result set, and automated derivation of refined queries based on user relevance feedback.

The Web has enhanced the integration of textual and multimedia information. We examine changes in Web users' multimedia searching on Excite (R), a major Web search service, over two years. Two data sets of 1025910 queries from 1997 and 1999 were analyzed. Key similarities and changes are identified. We identified changes in the multimedia terminology used and the length of multimedia queries. Our results are compared to findings from general Web searching studies. Implications for the design of multimedia systems and interfaces are discussed.

Hypermedia applications generate comprehension and orientation problems due to their rich link structure. Adaptive hypermedia tries to alleviate these problems by ensuring that the links and the content of the information pages are adapted to each individual user according to different background. The paper introduces KDAEHS, an Adaptive Education Hypermedia System based on structural computing. The adaptation techniques allow students to choose their own learning goals, get suggestions for suitable study sequence and appropriate course materials. Structural semantic information are extracted from the course context and stored in the form of a knowledge structure graph. An adaptive engine implemented in a Java servlet applies structural computing algorithms to generate adaptive presentation to different individuals. The paper presents the architecture of KDAEHS as well as the system components in detail.

We determine the watermark domain that maximizes data hiding capacity. We focus on the situation in which the watermarked signal undergoes lossy compression involving quantization in a specified compression domain. A novel linear model for the process of quantization is proposed which leads to analytical results estimating the data hiding capacity for various watermarking domains. Using this framework we predict appropriate transforms for robust spread spectrum data hiding in the face of JPEG compression. Simulation results verify our theoretical observations. We find that a repetition code used in conjunction with spread spectrum watermarking in a different domain than employed for compression improves data hiding capacity.

The paper introduces lightweight video encryption algorithms for transmission over wireless networks. The objective of these encryption algorithms is to reduce the total amount of data encrypted (while providing reasonable privacy and security) and to use multiple FEC codes to reduce the expected number of bit errors left in the data after decoding. The goal of this work is to provide encryption of video data while increasing the decodeability of the stream in the presence of network bit error. The first algorithm uses multi-layer video coding (which also helps to increase PSNR) for security and encrypts only a base layer. The second algorithm extends video encryption algorithms to deduce the amount of data encrypted and uses different BCH codes for each level.

We address the problem of robust transmission of compressed visual information over unreliable networks. Our approach employs the principle of multiple descriptions, through pre- and post-processing of the image data, without modification to the source or channel codecs. We employ oversampling to add redundancy to the original image data followed by a partitioning of the oversampled image into "equal" sub-images which can be coded and transmitted over separate channels. Simulations using two descriptors show that this approach yields exceptional performance when only one descriptor is received and outperforms other popular multiple description approaches.

There is an increasing demand for hypermedia delivery of technical documentation for safety critical systems. In many ways this documentation is as safety critical as the systems it documents, in that errors in the documentation can cause catastrophic maintenance failures. For this reason there need to be standards regulating the production of hypermedia documentation in these areas, but most of the work being done is directed towards data formats for storage and delivery, rather than on quality of content. The paper discusses the types of standard that might be relevant to this activity, along with some examples taken from the author's experience of instances of that type of standard. This discussion is used as a basis for the proposal of a standards framework for hypermedia technical documentation systems and a research agenda, based on some of the author's work, for development of such standards.

We present a novel and simple optical watermarking system aiming at overriding some practical problems when the state-of-the art digital watermarking techniques are applied to authenticate printed documents. We name our technique optical watermarking differing from traditional digital watermarking in the sense that the watermark extraction is done by some optical and visual means like a photocopier, while no digitization is required. The system security is guaranteed by adopting a content-based key share scheme originated from visual cryptography. The non-obtrusiveness effect of the watermarked document is achieved by modulating the watermark into a higher resolution grating level. Experimental results demonstrate the availability and practicality of the proposed approach.
