In an effort to design and develop a suitable platform for the next generation information systems, a new Graph Object Oriented database Model (GOOM) is proposed. In fact, the proposed model in its present definition is an improvement of our earlier work (S. Choudhury et al., 1998; 2000). The evolution is found to be absolutely essential in the interest of implementing the model and towards building a reliable Graph Query Language (GQL). We have introduced the concept of encapsulating homogeneous entities into semantic group while permitting the declaration of relationships amongst different semantic groups from various user-defined views. The proposed model aims at extracting the positive features of both object and relational data models besides providing a structured graphic representation. The paper emphasizes the mathematical foundation of the proposed graph language. In fact, the proposed GQL maintains a very similar interface to that of widely accepted SQL.

We combine theoretical and algorithmic advances in the area of information-hiding with the current mature knowledge-base in the human audio perception system to propose a novel audio data hiding technique that significantly pushes the state-of-the-art in the field. Our work is based on a combination of advances in two disjoint fields: information hiding and human auditory masking. The field of information hiding has seen a resurgence due to advances in the understanding of fundamental bounds from information theory. By integrating this with the human perceptual system knowledge that has been successfully exploited for several years in the audio compression community, we derive a new and improved audio data hiding technique that finds application in a number of exciting scenarios like music enhancement and digital communications over analog data channels. Our preliminary results show that we can embed data at an order of magnitude higher rate than existing audio data hiding systems, while being robust to channel noise.

Documents, both internal and related publicly available, are now considered a corporate asset. The potential to efficiently and accurately search such documents is of great significance. We demonstrate the application of sparse matrix-vector multiplication algorithms for text storage and retrieval as a means of supporting efficient and accurate text processing. As many parallel sparse matrix-vector multiplication algorithms exist, such an information retrieval approach lends itself to parallelism. This enables us to attack the problem of parallel information retrieval, which has resisted good scalability. We use sparse matrix compression algorithms and compare the storage of a subcollection of the commonly used NIST TREC corpus with a traditional inverted index. We demonstrate query processing using a sparse matrix-vector multiplication algorithm. Our results indicate that our approach saves approximately 35% of the total storage requirements for the inverted index. Additionally to improve accuracy, we develop a novel matrix based relevance feedback technique as well as a proximity search algorithm. The results of our experiment to incorporate proximity search capability into the system also indicate 35% less storage for the sparse matrix over the inverted index.

JPEG2000 is a new image compression standard. One of the goals of JPEG2000 is to support large images. Since even the compressed image file can be very big for large images, downloading the entire image can take a long time depending upon the user's connection speed. Thus, we propose to use streaming of JPEG2000 images. We use the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) for streaming. The use of HTTP to stream JPEG2000 images will ease its deployment. Thus, JPEG2000 images can be hosted by a Web server and can be streamed to the client helper application. The solution is scalable, so client devices with different capabilities, a variety of screen resolutions, and heterogeneous bandwidths can all achieve a scalable viewing of the same content stored in a single file. It is also possible to stream only selected regions of the image at a particular resolution and decode this partial stream and display it at the client. Thus, the proposed approach can handle resolution, quality and region of interest scalability feature of JPEG2000 images.

Real-time video/visual communication applications require trade-offs in terms of processing speed, visual image quality and power consumption. Motion estimation is one of the tasks in video coding that requires significant amount of computation. Block matching motion estimation algorithms such as the three-step search and the diamond search algorithms are being used in video coding schemes as alternatives to full search algorithms. Fast motion estimation algorithms reduce the computational complexity, at the expense of reduced performance. Special purpose fast processors can be employed as an alternative to meet the computational demand. However, the processing speed comes at the expense of higher power consumption. This paper investigates motion estimation algorithms and presents the computational, and performance trade-offs involved in choosing a motion estimation algorithm for video coding applications. Fast motion estimation algorithms often assume monotonic error surface in order to speed up the algorithm. The argument against this assumption is that the search might be trapped in local minima and may result in a noisy motion field. Prediction methods have been suggested in the literature as a solution to avoid these local minima and noisy motion field. The paper also investigates the effects of the monotonic error surface assumption as well as the appropriate choice of initial motion vectors that results in better performance of the motion estimation algorithms.

The new high-dimensional torus knot code with respect to its geometrical structure has been studied. The special features of the code are presented. (1) The code block is wound up into a small, compact code ball, so the code passes hardly damaged through the channel of a dense shower of error-making disturbances. (2) The torus knot winding works as block-size interleaving, which distributes the received burst errors randomly in the parity check cycles, so the code exhibits excellent burst error correction capability. (3) Majority logic decoding of each code digit based on the erroneous parity lines can be made up of a high-speed logic circuit thanks to the cyclical properties of the code parity check function. The four-dimensional, size-five 4Dm5-code was burned onto a 50-kilogate, 0.6-micron-order VLSI chip. The code block length and the transmission rate are 625 bits and 0.41, respectively. It was operated at a clock speed of 50 MHz, with a throughput of 6.25 Gbps. Through 100000 block trials, it was proven that the chip can perfectly correct a mean BER of 0.021 for burst and random mixed error situations.

The recent proliferation of computing devices and the contexts in which they are used demand diversity in collaborative applications as well. The objective of our research is to enable conferees to share applications that are adapted to their (heterogeneous) computing environments. This is achieved by using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for the communication medium. The conferees share the same data or a subset of that data represented in XML, but they may see it displayed in different ways as needed or desired. The framework adapts to the computing and network environment and transforms information so that it matches the client's local capabilities and resources. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper proposes OctMesh, an interactive mesh browsing scheme over the Internet. In OctMesh, a large-scale mesh is encoded into one bit-stream, which is organized with respect to spatial locality and resolution. When the mesh is viewed over the Internet, by examining the user's viewpoint, the compressed mesh with desired locality and resolution is streamed to the client. OctMesh enables a large-scale mesh to be viewed quickly, over the Internet. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper proposes an extension to general-purpose architectures to improve the performance of multimedia operations. More specifically, we consider the multimedia JPEG/MPEG standards and investigate the possibility to accelerate the Huffman encoding operation which is a known performance limiting function found in these standards. Our investigation suggests that it is possible to decrease the total number of execution cycles by 9% to 12% when the proposed unit is implemented as an extension to existing general-purpose hardware. This new extension is intended to be an integral part of a multimedia functional unit (MFU) that performs specific multimedia operations in a time efficient manner. © 2000 IEEE.
