The knowledge about users acquired and formalised through a model may be used in more than one way in an interactive intelligent system. At the higher level, these models may be used for recognition and interpretation of information about the user's behaviour, to provide him with help facilities and a set of useful information. Literature mainly proposes two different strategies devoted to the acquisition of the user models;that is the implicit acquisition and the explicit acquisition. Both the previously introduced approaches are able to satisfy acquisition needs. In particular, this paper proposes an integrated perspective of the two previously introduced approaches and discusses the balance between implicit and explicit acquisition taking into account the user behaviour. The previously introduced problems are treated considering a large and complex distributed information system (i.e. intranet system) in a specific domain: medical folders and medical knowledge bases. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper investigates empirically design issues in auditory information processing, relevant to interfaces for mobile telephony. This investigation forms the initial part of a larger experimental programme, which aims to investigate design methodologies for auditory-multimedia interfaces. Structured musical and environmental audio was used to communicate simple and complex (i.e., larger amounts) information for mobile telephony. The contribution of this paper is in the empirical investigation of the perceptual principles involved in using auditory stimuli to communicate information rather than the mere application of sound in this problem domain. Some of these experiments also aim to communicate information that would normally be communicated using the visual displays of mobile devices. Results indicate perceptual issues that need to be considered in the design process of auditory interfaces. Memory demands on users may in some cases prevent the correct interpretation of the auditory stimuli. Other issues observed to help the designing process of auditory user interfaces include the creation of perceptual context, semantic coding and auditory user interaction model. © 2000 IEEE.

We explore the problem of proving ownership or origin of multimedia content like image/video or audio signals through watermarking. The need for watermarking arises out of the unsuitability of present copyright laws for claiming ownership of digital content. Watermarking schemes however, are threatened by counterfeit attacks, which primarily use the freedom available in the choice of signature or choice of the watermarking method. A restrictive protocol for watermarking could go a long way in rendering counterfeit attacks extremely difficult. We suggest a comprehensive protocol that makes it possible for the true owner to claim ownership unambiguously, while making it extremely difficult for a pirate to do so. © 2000 IEEE.

The time-decreasing learning rate and neighborhood function of the basic SOM (self-organizing map) algorithm reduce its capability to adapt weights for a varied environment. In dealing with non-stationary input distributions and changing environments, we propose a modified SOM algorithm called "time adaptive SOM", or TASOM, that automatically adjusts the learning rate and neighborhood size of each neuron independently. The proposed TASOM is tested with stationary environments and its performance is compared with that of the basic SOM. It is also tested with non-stationary environments for representing the letter 'L', which may be translated, rotated, or scaled. Moreover, the TASOM is used for adaptive segmentation of images which may have undergone gray-level transformation. © 2000 IEEE.

Digital watermarking is an emerging research area for copyright protection of electronic documents and media, which is one of the most important problems to be solved in the cyberspace society. A statistic approach for embedding and extracting a digital watermark on an image is proposed. This approach is based on the realization that a stego-image after watermark attacks should preserve the characteristics of the stego-image if the stego-image after attacks retains its commercial values. In other words, the appearance of the image after attacks is still clearly visible and similar to the original image. This kind of preservation can be reflected as the variances of color levels of pixels both in stego-without-attacks- and stego-with-attacks-images are most likely the same. The embedded digital watermark by this approach seems robust after several attacks are performed on the stego-image. © 2000 IEEE.

Turbo codes have been shown to approach the Shannon limit for error correcting capability at low signal-to-noise ratios given large sized frames. Extensive research efforts have been examining ways to enhance the performance of turbo codes for short frames (e.g., voice transmission). One way of enhancing the performance is to optimize the energy allocated to each bit stream to achieve the best performance possible. In standard turbo codes, all bits are transmitted with equal energy. Changing the energy allocation strategy can enhance the performance of turbo codes with short frame lengths. Using computer simulation and analytic bounds, different strategies are discussed and applicability to short frame applications investigated. © 2000 IEEE.

The key to the efficient operation of turbo codes is the interleaver design. With proper design, the pairing of low-weight sequences to the input of the encoders can be avoided. Circular shift interleavers can be used to ensure that the minimum distance due to weight-2 input sequences grows roughly as √2N, where N is the block length. We generalized the mapping function of the circular shift interleaver to be suitable for both equal and unequal error protections. Also, we present the results of a unique examination of the behavior of the general circular shift interleaver for equal and unequal error protections using turbo code with short frames. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper describes a methodology and development approach to implement an object relational database management system (ORDBMS) with the frame model (Fong, 1997). The frame model method is a solution to extend relational database management systems (RDBMS) to handle complex data such as objects. Objects can be represented in a frame model schema as classes, constraints and methods. Schema translation is the first step to implement the object-relational database management system (ORDBMS). This paper investigates a stepwise methodology for schema translation from a relational model to a frame model. The second step is the implementation of ORDBMS to incorporate RDBMS as a kernel, application program interface (API) as interactive SQL and a method command interpreter. Methods are pre-compiled and stored in RDBMS as stored procedures. Methods can be invoked directly through API or a constraint class that is defined in the frame model schema when the associated interactive SQL is issued from the API. © 2000 IEEE.

Online analytical processing is an emerging technique for the implementation of decision support applications that access remote datacubes over information highways. We propose a novel approach for sending datacubes over congested networks, so that, in order to preserve fast response time, some datacube tuples can be eventually lost but yet preserving a good approximation of the overall datacube. The main idea is to prioritize the datacube information and to send it using a priority-based transmission protocol. The proposed method relies on two well-known techniques: the wavelet decomposition, for the encoding of the datacube into a sequence of prioritized coefficients, and the priority encoding transmission protocol, to deliver them. To reconstruct the datacube with a user-defined error level, priorities are assigned using a thresholding technique. Preliminary experimental results are very encouraging. © 2000 IEEE.

The development of information systems (IS) is of great importance for researchers and industrial users. Different methods for IS design have been proposed. Some put the emphasis on statical aspects, and others on dynamical aspects. A third category of methods has recently appeared, which try to take into account both aspects, and therefore provide an unified view of data and treatments. There also exist approaches that put the stress on rigour in the specification and validation process. This paper presents a CASE tool which gives conceptual help for IS design. On one hand, it handles the statical and dynamical aspects while providing the user with products that are readable and easy to understood and, on the other hand, it validates the specification obtained in a rigourous way. It is an attempt to satisfy both the designer and the user. © 2000 IEEE.
