This paper introduces a graph-oriented model for the conceptual level design of large, complex information systems. This has been shown to be highly effective to the system designer from the perspectives of maintainability and upgradability. Basically due to the flat structure and the lack of holding multidimensional data, the relational model does not provide a structural approach to the system designer. The alternative object oriented model offers the structured approach but also is not able to describe various intermodular relationships spread over the same or different levels within a data model. The graph data model allows dynamic regrouping of related entities at the designers' level. We have proposed an appropriate data structure and the corresponding DDL has been developed. Test runs on a simulated environment further establish its computational efficiency. © 2000 IEEE.

Watermark design and detection have been studied as two separate problems so far. However, we show that, if the watermarking algorithm is based on the watermark detection method, then significant gains can be achieved. With a watermark detector based on a sequential hypothesis test rather than a fixed sample size test, the number of watermark pixels can be reduced almost by a factor of two for small detection error probabilities. This is because, the sequential hypothesis test requires less (average) number of pixels to detect the presence/absence of a watermark compared to a fixed sample size detector. The savings in the number of pixels to be watermarked results in an increased immunity to host signal attacks such as cropping. Degradation in the signal quality due to redundant watermarking is also minimized. Further, applications such as DVD require minimal amount of watermarking. The computational efficiency of the proposed watermark detector can also be exploited to efficiently search for watermarks in large image databases. © 2000 IEEE.

Data hiding embeds extra information into digital media for the purpose of authentication, annotation and copyright protection. Transparency and robustness are two contradictory requirements for any data hiding scheme. This paper studies audio data hiding using the spread spectrum (SS) technique in the subband domain. On the transparency part, we propose a novel method of tuning psycho-acoustic models employed in audio compression to control the audibility of the introduced distortion for data hiding. On robustness part, we have studied the feature selection and synchronization problem in order to maximize the survivability of the embedded data. Our study shows that mid-band coefficients are appropriate features for data embedding. We propose to track/recover synchronization of the audio signal before the detection, facilitating the extraction of the embedded data. Experiment results have shown that our data hiding scheme in the subband domain can survive a wide range of attacks while providing transparent audio quality and abundant embedding capacity (>20 bps). © 2000 IEEE.

Parallel computers can do more than simply speed up sequential computations. They are capable of finding solutions that are far better in quality than those obtained by sequential computers. This fact is demonstrated by analyzing sequential and parallel solutions to numerical problems in a real-time paradigm. In this setting, numerical data required to solve a problem are received as input by a computer system, at regular intervals. The computer must process its inputs as soon as they arrive. It must also produce its outputs at regular intervals, as soon as they are available. We show that for some real-time numerical problems a parallel computer can deliver a solution that is significantly more accurate than that computed by a sequential computer. Similar results were derived recently in the areas of real-time optimization and real-time cryptography. © 2000 IEEE.

Recent advances in computer technologies have made it feasible to provide multimedia services. As a result, the research and development of continuous media servers has received more attention in recent years. In general, these servers consist of multiple zone-bit recording (ZBR) disks or multiple storage nodes connected through the high-speed network to construct a distributed server. One key issue in developing continuous media servers is the allocation of data into ZBR disks. We propose a novel data placement scheme, called VARBT (variable block-size and data-transfer-time), to fully utilize the characteristics of ZBR disks. The proposed scheme determines data block size in each zone completely according to the capacity of that zone thus the storage utilization is 100%. During the process of data retrieval, the data transfer rate for each block is equal to the bandwidth of each physical zone thus the bandwidth utilization is also maximal. This scheme can be applied not only to a single-disk platform, but also to a multiple-disk server and even a distributed server with multiple storage nodes. Through simulations and performance evaluation, we found that VARBT scheme has the smaller average block size, required memory space and system response time to support more simultaneous streams, and meanwhile it achieves 100% storage utilization and bandwidth utilization. © 2000 IEEE.

The problem of data transmission in a heterogeneous network environment involves many considerations, among these: the design and selection of coding schemes and transmissions techniques are the most relevant. The interest in mobile multimedia networks has stimulated the research in this field. Significant progress has been made in this technology. The problem becomes more relevant if we desire to transmit signals in wireline and wireless networks. Progressive transmission is very useful for sending video and, in general, multimedia data over band-limited channels;although it presents problems over noisy channels due to its use of variable length coding. It therefore requires high quality methods to avoid channels noises. One approach is to merge the above mentioned progressive transmission with VQ 2-D-CELP of video over fading channels approach that extends the concept of CELP for speech coding. This technique employ an inverse error predictor filter, an iterative clustering method to design the predictors form an initial array and an algorithm to determine the block size. We state the general design problem, decompose it into simpler subproblems and discuss the solutions to these subproblems. © 2000 IEEE.

The growing number of applications for 3D graphics and imaging systems in the mass market requires the customized approach to the design of high-performance 3D graphics and imaging system architectures. That fact coupled with the strong trends to industrial standardization of graphics API, such as OpenGL, leads to enhanced portability for imaging and graphics applications. The progress on the hardware support of API functionality gives a real possibility to use a top-down approach in the design of custom graphics/imaging systems based on the mixed hardware/software implementation of the OpenGL architecture. Software simulation is a relatively cheap and fast way for initial graphics architecture template development and evaluation to acquire the structure and parameters that can be used later for HDL elaboration and simulation. This paper discusses a 3D graphics and imaging system architecture model implementation based on OpenGL API hardware support simulation. The object-oriented approach has been used for this development of analytic and software models simulating hardware units on different stages of the graphics pipeline. The Interactive Imaging System Architecture Composer has been developed in this project for fast run-time simulation management, data acquisition and interpretation. The expandable set of architecture templates uses a reconfigurable shared library of "virtual hardware units" simulating the different hardware structures for graphics and image processing. © 2000 IEEE.

This paper gives the theoretical framework for recursively estimating the depth and motion parameters from the image motion equation derived using the spherical projection. An extended Kalman filter is employed for estimation. Results have been found to be encouraging in some cases when applied on two case studies involving vase and cube respectively.

Spatial watermarks are simple and quick to embed but vulnerable to intentional attacks or benign transformation such as compression. Watermarking of compressed video is often performed in the compressed domain. In this paper we show that by exploiting the inherent processing gain of direct sequence spread spectrum, it is possible to embed a watermark in raw video and still recover it from an MPEG decoder.

We investigate the problem of packetizing multiple embedded bitstreams to improve the error resilience of source codes. We discuss various packetization schemes against packet erasure at both low and high bit rates. We formulate various versions of packetization of multiple embedded bitstreams for minimum distortion as discrete optimization problems, and propose efficient algorithms to compute globally optimal solutions to these problems.
