Many Web applications serve pages that change infrequently, such as catalog pages within a shopping application or a calendar of events on a university Web site. Such pages change only when a staff member logs in, and updates data on which the pages are based. Without caching, requests for such pages result in redundant read operations on the database and generation of HTML from a collection of HTML generating components. In this paper, we explain how we decrease this processing overhead in Java Web applications by caching infrequently changing Web pages.

The characteristics of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) determine that the authentication approaches to protect routing and data packet transmission in MANETs should be lightweight and scalable. In this paper, we propose a lightweight authentication protocol, which utilizes one-way hash chain to provide effective and efficient authentication for communications between neighboring nodes in MANETs. The security properties and performance are also analyzed in the paper. The analysis shows that the protocol incurs low overhead penalty and achieves a tradeoff between security and performance.

The goal of this paper is to promote application of logic synthesis methods and tools in different tasks of modern digital designing. The paper discusses functional decomposition methods, which are currently being investigated, with special attention to balanced decomposition. Since technological and computer experiments with application of these methods produce promising results, this kind of logic synthesis probably dominate the development of digital circuits for FPGA structures. Many examples confirming effectiveness of decomposition method in technology mapping in digital circuits design for cryptography and DSP applications are presented.

The ubiquitous computing environment and users' demand for multimedia personalization precipitate a need for ubiquitous personalized multimedia services (UPMSs). Delivering UPMSs is very complex because of diverse device capabilities, dynamic network characteristics, etc. This paper proposes a lifecycle management model based on FSM (finite state machines) for ubiquitous personalized multimedia services (UPMSs). By using this model, the management of UPMSs is very clear and easy, and the services are delivered more efficiently, effectively, and robustly.

New developments in the field of theoretical chemistry require the computation of numerous Molecular Potential Energy Surfaces (PESs) to generate adequate quantum force field parameters. Because workstations alone cannot fulfill the requirements of these modern chemical advances, we present in this paper how we have tackled this problem using several up-to-date computer science technology such as grid-computing middleware, molecular databases, script interfacing, etc. An example on the optimization of semiempirical parameters for water shows the potential power of our approach and the benefit theoretical chemistry can gain with it.

The paper presents a Web Services-based platform for the definition and execution of Grid applications described through a workflow language, fulfilling QoS requirements, and implemented by basic and Internet-accessible services delivered by service providers. A first implementation of the platform employs a computation service developed on HiMM, a QoS-based, hierarchical middleware for Grid computing, extended to support the integration of domain specific Web Services invocations in the code of Grid applications. The platform was tested for the prediction of the effects of possible contingencies that compromise the operation of large electrical networks.

This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to access control in mobile agent systems, where a multipoint security check mechanism visualizes the services of a host as individual components and access of each will require authentication. Since the security check crosscuts various functional components of mobile agents and their platforms, it is naturally handled in the aspect-oriented paradigm. This approach is suitable not only for developing mobile agent systems from scratch, but also for enhancing legacy mobile agent systems. We demonstrate our approach through a case study.

Distinct features of handheld devices, such as their mobility, personalization and location-awareness, engender a new class of consumer-oriented software applications. While simple shopping assistant programs were one of the first to emerge for this class of devices, many modern m-commerce applications become more complex and utilize a wide range of features of pervasive computing. In this paper, we discuss a number of design issues pertinent to the development of these applications including context-awareness, personalization, ubiquitous access, and intelligent interfaces. We applied these and other principles in the design and development of SMMART, an intelligent context-aware framework for delivery of personalized and targeted promotions to the users of mobile devices, which is used as a case study throughout this paper.

This paper considers a teaching approach applied to an introductory computer science course. The individual work with each of the students attending such a course consists of assigning examples, exercises and problems corresponding to the respective level of the student's preparation. These exercises and problems are generated by a system that uses templates which are developed in advance. Each template is a parameterized program or program fragment written in a programming language such as C, C++, Java, etc. The parameters are XML-like elements and represent statements interpreted by a specific system. As a consequence of this, items similar to the initial program text are generated. Simultaneously, the system also generates the results from their execution. The generated examples are in HTML format and are stored on the class Website.

In this paper, we present techniques for exploiting intermittently available resources in grid infrastructures to support QoS-based multimedia applications on mobile devices. Specifically, we integrate power aware admission control, grid resource discovery, dynamic load-balancing and energy adaptation techniques to enable power deficient devices such as PDAs to run distributed multimedia applications. Our integrated solution adapts to dynamic changes in device energy consumption and unpredictable grid resource availabilities without compromising application quality of service (QoS). Our simulation results indicate that our power-aware grid-based approaches, not only improve QoS of mobile multimedia services, but also efficiently load-balance the grid resources.
