Hash algorithms are a class of cryptographic primitives used for fulfilling the requirements of integrity and authentication in cryptography. In this paper, we propose and present the ASIC implementation of 'HashChip', a hardware architecture aimed at providing a unified solution for three different commercial MDC (manipulation detection codes) hash primitives, namely MD5, SHA1 and RIPEMD160. The novelty of the work lies in the exploitation of the similarities in the structure of the three algorithms to obtain an optimized architecture. The performance analysis of a 0.18/spl mu/m ASIC implementation of the architecture has also been done.

We present in this paper the effectiveness and the feasibility of measuring search engine efficiency using RankPower, a single value measurement. RankPower rates the search engines by computing the number and the rank of relevant URLs among the returned results. This is different from traditional performance measures of information retrieval systems using the precision and recall rates. The RankPower is much more easier to compute and much more intuitive for ordinary Web search users. The conclusions are supported by a set of empirical results collected from the experiments that the authors designed and carried out.

The EGRID project aims at implementing a national facility for processing economic and financial data using computational grid technology. As such, it acts as the underlying fabric on top of which partner projects, more strictly focused on research in itself, develop end-user applications. In this paper we present the first release of the infrastructure, which is based on European DataGrid (EDG) middleware and is hosted as an independent Virtual Organization (VO) within INFN-GRID (Czajkowski et al., 2001). However, the EDG middleware is partially inadequate for our partners because of security, privacy and user friendliness. A detailed discussion of temporary workarounds and planned future enhancements will be presented.

In several public-key cryptosystems, the main operation consists of the modular exponentiation, which is performed using successive modular multiplications. The size of the operands that are used in these cryptosystems is considerably large (1024 bits), consuming a considerable amount of time. This impacts on the performance of the cryptosystem, especially in real time applications. In order to reduce the execution time in these cryptosystems, the total number of modular multiplications must be reduced. There are several methods that attempt to reduce this number either by partitioning the exponent in windows or by reducing the number of elements to be multiplied. In this paper, we propose a fast and compact reconfigurable hardware for computing modular exponentiation using the addition-chain methods.

The World Wide Web provides new opportunities for distance education over the Internet. The Web, when combined with other network tools can be used to create a virtual classroom to bring together a community of learners for interactive education. In the paper we purpose the moving some of educational instructions of the Institute of Science Dokuz Eylul University at the WWW. This objective is achieved by investigating the use of emerging network technologies for training full time students and part time students. This research uses the electronic educational materials already available on the Web; and it evaluates the effectiveness of various collaborative tools.

Nowadays UML based testing becomes more and more noteworthy, as UML is broadly accepted as de facto standard for object-oriented modeling language. A lot of researches propose test approaches for several types of UML diagrams, focusing on various viewpoints. An approach for testing polymorphic interactions, which are defined in UML sequence diagrams, is presented in this paper. From our observation, there are several forms of polymorphic interactions, which have their polymorphic behavior controlled by distinct factors. A method to test each form is determined from these factors. If an interaction is in one of the polymorphic forms defined in this paper, the factors that affect polymorphic behavior of the interaction can be addresses. Finally test cases for the interaction can be created for testing its polymorphic behavior.

This paper describes the use of programming projects for handheld devices within software engineering project classes. There are several benefits associated with using an unfamiliar platform and development tools in upper-level software engineering courses. The student's lack of familiarity with the development environment forces more time to be spent early on in the requirements and design of the project. In addition, the increasing popularity of mobile computing devices has made handheld programming experience valuable to graduating students in their job searches. This paper addresses the motivation for using handheld device programming projects, the technical issues associated with such projects, and the results of several semesters worth of teaching experience and student feedback.

This paper reports on an overall methodology to develop a strategic architecture plan which can be applied to organizations. The deployment of the plan would allow for advanced implementation of technologies such as mass customization, customer relationship management systems, decision support systems and knowledge management systems. Despite advances in the development of new applications, many organizations are not able to embrace these new technologies mainly due to not having devised an appropriate plan to position themselves technologically and organizationally to incorporate these technologies. In many instances, organizations are even crippled to take advantage of the new competitive systems, because they lack the right standards and or suffering from old, mismatched and antiquated systems that they can not get rid of easily. The road map will provide organizations with specific technical requirements for the immediate needs as well as a migration path to "plug in" the component and the products the business is moving towards.

In card games, two or more players can act as colluders: they exchange information in order to collectively win the game. Electronic games (e-gaming) are supposed to be played under secure e-gaming protocols. Hence some tricks cannot be performed: card exchange, knowledge of opponent cards without their consent, shuffling and dealing the deck for one's own benefit, etc. Therefore, if two or more players collude, all they can do is exchange information. In the real world, other players can usually discover such colluders but, in a virtual world, colluders can use several ways to collude: cellular phones, instant messaging software,... they could even be seating next to each other while playing. In this paper, several methods to detect collusion in virtual card games are described.

In Web service, one of the essential requirements in e-business is to classify and register the complex information. How to describe the registry classification information and construct the registry classification model is a keystone of realizing complex information classification and registry in ebXML/R&R system. Semantic Web is an important initiative in this respect, we introduce ontology into the description of registry classification information and describe registry classification information ontology with OWL, and then we retrieve a registry classification model (RCM) to manage the registry classification information specially, which is abstracted from ebXML/RIM. Finally, an example of constructing the ebXML/R&R classification model based ontology is presented to illustrate the approach. The study of registry classification model based on ontology has theoretic and practical significance for realizing the interoperability between ebXML/R&R and other information source R&R classification registry technology.
