Graphical user interface (GUI) application component is a compound component, which consists of fine-grained components (such as GUI widgets) and specific logic. GUI application components fabricated by conventional techniques expose low extensibility because of the incomplete separation between the application logic part and GUI part inside the components. In this paper, we propose a new component architecture, "BeaM", which realizes complete separation between both parts inside the GUI application components. We have implemented a development environment corresponding to the proposed architecture in Java language. As a result of experimental evaluations, it is found that BeaM is useful to develop GUI application components as JavaBeans components with high extensibility.

Although individual node cooperation is necessary for the correct execution of network protocols in mobile ad-hoc networks, it is not always guaranteed. Therefore, misbehavior detection and reputation mechanisms need to be implemented in order to reinforce node cooperation. In this paper, we address the issue of detecting non-cooperative behavior during packet forwarding in clustered mobile ad-hoc networks, which operate under the coordination and supervision of a central entity. The proposed solution uses end-to-end authenticated acknowledgments for every transmitted packet. Low computational overhead is achieved by employing an adapted version of the TESLA symmetric key broadcast authentication protocol.

Multitasking Web search on ***

A user's single session with a Web search engine may consist of seeking information on either single or multiple topics. Most Web search sessions consist of two queries of two words. We present findings from a study of sessions on the Vivisimo Web search engine to examine the degree of multitasking search by typical Web searchers. Findings show that 11.1% of search sessions were multitasking searches, and there are a broad variety of search topics in multitasking search sessions. The paper proposes that on various levels, Web search can be conceptualized at different levels as a multitasking activity. The implications of our findings for Web design and further research are discussed.

In this paper, we report our work on multiple-pattern matching in LZW compressed files using Aho-Corasick algorithm. The algorithm takes O(mt+n+r) time with O(mt) extra space, where n is the size of the compressed file, m is the total size of all patterns, t is the size of the LZW trie and r is the number of occurrences of the patterns. Extensive experiments have been conducted to test the performance of our algorithms. The results show that our multiple-pattern matching algorithm is practically the fastest among all approaches when the number of patterns is not very large. Therefore, our algorithm is preferable for general string matching applications. The proposed algorithm is efficient for large files and it is particularly efficient when being applied on archival search if the archives are compressed with a common LZW trie.

Many museums around the world rent audio players to their visitors to provide automated tours delivering pre-recorded information about their exhibits. Though generally pleased with their patrons' responses to automated audio tours museum administrators find that hosting them can be expensive, time consuming, and frustrating. Ongoing advances in mobile wireless technology provide an alternative to the current cumbersome method of renting sound players to museum visitors. Many patrons bring their own "digital sound player" with them in the guise of their personal cell phone. As cell phones proliferate and the price of calling plans falls cell phones may present a viable alternative to current audio tour systems. History calls was a recent experiment using VXML technology to deliver an automated audio museum tour directly to patrons' cell phones.

Distribution has become a fundamental requirement for information systems and not an auxiliary. We believe it is important to consider distribution from early stages of the life cycle of software development and deal with distribution at a high abstraction level. This paper, presents a conceptual model for specifying software architectures of distributed information systems. The conceptual model is defined by combining the aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) and the component-based software development (CBSD). The distribution conceptual model is explained by presenting its AOSD perspective and the CBSD perspective. The AOSD perspective of the conceptual model describes the mobile and replication behaviour of an architectural element by introducing a distribution aspect and a replication aspect. The architectural perspective (CBSD perspective) of the distribution model allows specification of the distributed communication of the architectural elements of a software architecture.

Advancements in the wireless technology have given rise to various payment methods and protocols. The recent, and probably latest KSL (S. Kungpisdan et al., 2003) protocol has been implemented for mobile credit card payments. This paper proposes a smart card based wireless Internet payment system which is derived from KSL (S. Kungpisdan et al., 2003) protocol. A client using a wireless smart card can perform transactions over a wireless LAN which is connected to the Internet via a wired network.

Multiple query formulations (MQF) have been extensively explored and when used, provide considerable improvements in quality of information retrieval on the Web. However, the question of how to formulate a variety of distinctive queries and how many queries are needed in each unique case remains essentially unanswered. In this research we present a process for selecting search terms and formulating multiple short queries from the original long query. We introduce a scaled cumulative query weight (t) function which is based exclusively on the submitted long query. We demonstrate that this function can serve as a predictive variable for the effectiveness of various multiple query formulation methods and can be used algorithmically to determine the operational parameters for a multiple query formulation process.

It is important to predict and analyze user acceptance of information technology in order to address success and failures of technological products. The theory of reasoned action (TRA) has been used for two decades in empirical studies to predict user acceptance of information technology. Agent-based modeling (ABM) is well suited for studying user acceptance of information technology, which is an instance of contingent behavior. In this paper the research was extended on ABM of the TRA by comparing technology adoption rates across varied sections of a population. The authors discussed intention variations among laggards, innovators and the undecided sections of employees in an organization. The implementation is cost effective and easy to use in contrast to the empirical method. The results we produced corroborate the results obtained from the last few decades of empirical research in this field.

The grid and Web service are converging as the WSRF is proposed. The grid not only provides the computing and resources sharing pools, but also supports the electronic business and enterprise applications integration with the composition of grid service. The paper presents a novel semantic composition method and adaptive scheduling algorithm based on grid workflow, which can benefit from the workflow architecture in the composition, visualization, verification, scheduling, execution and monitoring. The method can address semantic issues and automate the composition of grid service, and the algorithm can improve scheduling efficiency when the composite grid service is executed in the grid environment. According to the simulation experiment on the prototype implemented on the GT3, the composition and scheduling have the advantage of efficiency and effectiveness.
