Shape is one of the fundamental visual features in the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) paradigm. Numerous shape descriptors have been proposed in the literature. These can be broadly categorized as region-based and contour-based descriptors. Contour-based shape descriptors make use of only the boundary information, ignoring the shape interior content. Therefore, these descriptors cannot represent shapes for which the complete boundary information is not available. On the other hand, region-based descriptors exploit both boundary and internal pixels, and therefore are applicable to generic shapes. Among the region-based descriptors, moments have been very popular since they were first introduced in the 60's. In this paper, we study and compare three moment-based descriptors: Invariant moments, Zernike moments, and radial Chebyshev moments. Experiments on the MPEG-7 shape databases show that radial Chebyshev moments achieve the highest retrieval performance.

Current mobile agent systems are based on agent architectures that are partially or fully implementation programming language-specific. Mobile agent implementation in a specific programming language has usage limitations as the inter agent communication and agent migration to other agent hosts needs support for the same language. Widely used Java-based agents have an advantage of easy agent migration through bytecode transfer but this also imposes the requirement of a Java virtual machine (JVM) on each agent host where agents can migrate. To achieve a truly system independent and agent system architecture independent solution, we propose a XML-based mobile agent architecture. This paper presents a mobile agent system design based on the use of XML-based agent code, the UDDI registry for agent registration and lookup/discovery and XML Web service calls for mobile agent intercommunication and migration. This also facilitates industry to have easier and less risky adaptation from existing agent system implementation.

Many have expected that the increased availability of price and product information over a wide range of vendors and low search costs on the Web would increase price competition, reduce price dispersion, and eventually lower the level of product price. However, recent empirical studies have shown somewhat conflicting results. Price dispersion still exists in many online industries even for commodities like books and CDs. This research explores the reason behind consumer search behavior on the Web. The results of this study show that consumers in e-market do not search for either price or product information, even with low search costs, as much as we have anticipated. The results also indicate that the traditional consumer segmentation in the physical market may not always apply in the e-market. In terms of price and product information searches, brand loyalists showed higher search activity than other e-consumer groups unlike in physical market.

The authors described the progress extending the undergraduate computer science (CS) curriculum to include a deep understanding of techniques for information and knowledge management systems (IKMS). In a novel five-course sequence, students build and work with techniques for data mining, information retrieval, and text analysis, and develop a large-scale IKMS project. The authors taught in a hands-on lab setting where students use tools they have built, performing experiments that could extend the field. Hence undergraduates have firsthand knowledge of performing CS research using scientific methods. Second, a rigorous set of evaluation criteria developed in the Psychology Institute was utilized to evaluate how well students learn using our approaches. Ultimately, it is believed that this specialization warrants inclusion as an option in the standard undergraduate CS curriculum.

Secure group communication enables only the users in that group securely communicate with each other. Because the users can join or leave the group dynamically, scalability is a major concern. In this paper, we propose a communication-efficient model using multiplicative one-way functions. It also has well known tree-based structure but uses exclusive keys that are held by the users not in some subtree. When totally n users are in the group, proposed model reduces the size of multicast message required in join or leave operation from O(logn) to O(1) keeping other costs comparable. The security of proposed model is based on the difficulty of finding square root modulo composite number and it also satisfies both forward and backward secrecy. Therefore, proposed model is very applicable to a wide area network environment or a low-bandwidth channel such as ad hoc network.

Interactive Data Language (IDL) is an array-oriented data analysis and visualization application, which is widely used in research, commerce, and education. It is meaningful to make user IDL applications collaborative between computers over networks, using a common message broker as the underlying communication system. In order to achieve the global collaboration, we have brought together in the research a Grid-based collaboration paradigm, a shared event model, different implementing structures, methodologies and technologies. We have succeeded in our prototype codes, and we are currently working on a real life IDL application package to make it collaborative. At the same time, we are trying to find better structures and methods for the collaboration in general user IDL applications.

The distributed coordination function (DCF) is specified for both ad-hoc and infrastructure network configurations in the IEEE 802.11 standard. In this paper, we present an analytic model for evaluating the performance at nodes in a DCF based ad-hoc network without the assumption of saturation condition made in previous works. We model each node as a discrete time M/G/1 queue and describe the distribution of the DCF virtual service time by means of probability generating function (PGF), and further, obtain the average packet queueing delay and response time. Three adjustable input parameters are the number of stations n, packet arrival rate /spl lambda/, and average payload length E[P]. The analytical results are validated through extensive simulations, and it is shown that the model has significant high accuracy.

Some of the algorithms developed within the artificial neural-networks tradition can be easily adopted to wireless sensor network platforms and will meet the requirements for sensor networks like: simple parallel distributed computation, distributed storage and data robustness. As a result of the dimensionality reduction obtained simply from the outputs of the neural-networks clustering algorithms, lower communication costs and energy savings can also be obtained. In this paper we will present two possible implementations of the ART and FuzzyART neural-networks algorithms, which are unsupervised learning methods for categorization of the sensory inputs. They are tested on a data obtained from a set of several motes, equipped with several sensors each. Results from simulations of purposefully faulty sensors show the data robustness of these architectures. The proposed neural-networks classifiers have distributed short and long-term memory of the sensory inputs and can function as security alert when unusual sensor inputs are detected.

We describe our experience applying tabular mathematical approaches to software specifications. Our purpose is to show alternative approaches to writing tabular specifications and to help practitioners who want to apply such methods by allowing them to pick the best one for their problem. The object for the case study is software used by Dell Products for testing the functionality of the keyboards on notebook computers. Starting from informal documents, we developed a variety of tabular representations of finite state machine specifications and tabular trace specifications. We found that the discipline required by these methods raised issues that had never been considered and resulted in documents that were both more complete and much clearer. The various tabular representations are compared from a user's point of view, i.e., clarity, consistency, unambiguity, completeness, suitability, etc.

Grid computing emerges from the need to integrate a collection of distributed computing resources to offer performance unattainable by any single machine. Grid technology facilitates data sharing across many organizations in different geographical locations. Data replication is an excellent technique to move and cache data close to users. Replication reduces access latency and bandwidth consumption. It also facilitates load balancing and improves reliability by creating multiple data copies. However, grid environments introduce significant new challenges such as dynamic resource availability and network performance changes. As users requests vary constantly, the system needs a dynamic replication strategy that adapts to users' dynamic behavior. To address such issues, this paper presents and evaluates the performance of six dynamic replication strategies for two different kinds of access patterns. Our replication strategies are mainly based on utility and risk. Before placing a replica at a site, we calculate an expected utility and risk index for each site by considering current network load and user requests. A replication site is then chosen by optimizing expected utility or risk indexes.
