"Mobile Internet" arguably means more than just a new technique for communication; many analysts believe that it revolutionized the business world and innovate the way individuals live. This study concentrates on switching existing e-commerce applications from the wired Internet to the mobile Internet. Web services technologies are currently the most appropriate technologies to realize e-commerce applications. This study develops a mobile commerce application framework based on Web services technologies and mobile Internet functions. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed framework, an m-store implementation is deployed in a laboratory and simulated using HTTP transactions with secure sockets layer connections in a multi-user access environment. The minimum response time is stable (0.170 seconds for 5 users, 0.196 seconds for 50 users); the maximum throughput is invariable (0.365 Mbps for 5 users, 0.317 Mbps for 50 users), and the maximum transaction rate has little variation (5.882 per seconds for 5 users, 5.102 per seconds for 50 users). Results of this study demonstrate that the proposed framework is flexible, stable and scalable.

Buffer overflow attacks cause serious security problems. Array & pointer bound checking is one of the most effective approaches for defending against buffer overflow attacks when source code is available. However; original array & pointer bound checking causes too much overhead since it is designed to catch memory errors and it puts too many checks. In this paper, we propose an efficient array & pointer bound checking strategy to defend against buffer overflow attacks. In our strategy, only the bounds of write operations are checked. We discuss the optimization strategy via hardware/software and conduct experiments. The experimental results show that our strategy can greatly reduce the overhead of array & pointer bound checking. Our conclusion is that based on our strategy, array & pointer bound checking can be a practical solution for defending systems against buffer overflow attacks with tolerable overhead.

In this paper, an effective steganalysis based on statistical moments of wavelet characteristic function is proposed. It decomposes the test image using two-level Haar wavelet transform into nine subbands (here the image itself is considered as the LL/sub 0/ subband). For each subband, the characteristic function is calculated. The first and second statistical moments of the characteristic functions from all the subbands are selected to form an 18-dimensional feature vector for steganalysis. The Bayes classifier is utilized in classification. All of the 1096 images from the CorelDraw image database are used in our extensive experimental work. With randomly selected 100 images for training and the remaining 996 images for testing, the proposed steganalysis system can steadily achieve a correct classification rate of 79% for the non-blind Spread Spectrum watermarking algorithm proposed by Cox et ai, 88% for the blind Spread Spectrum watermarking algorithm proposed by Piva et ai, and 91% for a generic LSB embedding method, thus indicating significant advancement in steganalysis.

It is a challenging problem to apply an efficient teaching-learning method to the situation where learners have diverse computing backgrounds and the learning content to be covered is also in the broad coverage. In this case, it's required that more sophisticated teaching-learning method should be devised. The authors have drawn a method which can be applied to that case efficiently by using Web technology. In the authors' approach, it is focused on finding out classification methods for both learners and learning content based on the Web. To make classification and manipulation of learning content ease, learning content was recognized in order to have discrete form by introducing the concept of the knowledge unit which is extracted from each topic. Also, to make classification and diagnostic of learners ease, questions were develop to measure them and analyze each question using item response theory (IRT) on the Web. From the experiment of students sampled using the method, it is shown that learners with various backgrounds and the learning content with distribution on the broad range can be categorized effectively into several groups. Also, the authors describe how to apply the method to the introductory courses at post secondary level.

A new one time password system is described which is secure against eavesdropping and server database compromise at the same time. Traditionally, these properties have proven to be difficult to satisfy at the same time and only one previous scheme i.e. Lamport hashes also called S/KEY one time password system has claimed to achieve that. Lamport hashes however have a limitation that they are computationally intensive for the client and the number of times a client may login before the system should be re-initialized is small. We address these limitations to come up with a new scheme called the N/R one time password system. The basic idea is have the server aid the client computation by inserting 'breakpoints' in the hash chains. Client computational requirements are dramatically reduced without any increase in the server computational requirements and the number of times a client may login before the system has to be reinitialized is also increased significantly. The system is particularly suited for mobile and constrained devices having limited computational power.

Workflow has been considered as a crucial component in several Grid projects. Among many workflow standards, BPEL, Business Process Execution Language, is emerging as a de-facto workflow standard in Grid and Web services communities. In this paper, we present the adoption of standard BPEL to orchestrate Grid services based on OGSI specification. Our approach is based on proxy services, which enable user to interact with OGSI Grid services supporting GSI security mechanisms, OGSI factory mechanism, and notification mechanism. Our proposed architecture is platform-neutral as it does not depend on any specific security architecture. With our implementation, the proxy services witl be generated automatically for each target Grid service. Thus, they are not limited to pre-defined Grid services. In addition, our proxy services also remove design-time binding limitations of BPEL and allow user to define the binding information of proxy services in run-time. As our approach utilizes original BPEL specification without special modification, we believe that developing Grid applications on our architecture will benefit from standard BPEL-compliant tools and generic Web services tools. We illustrate the example of using our proposed framework by orchestrating drug discovery processes using BPEL and Grid services.

AVS Workgroup (Audio Video coding Standard Working Group of China) was established by the Science and technology Department of Ministry of information Industry on June 2002. The goal of the working group is to establish the standard for compression, decompression, manipulation and display in digital audio and video multimedia equipment and systems. This standard is applied in the field of significant information industry such as high-resolution digital broadcast, high-density laser-digital, storage media, wireless broad-band multimedia communication, and internet broad-band stream media. Up to now, two parts of AVS Video, one part for high-definition video named AVS1-P2, and another one for wireless streaming video named AVS1-P7, had been finished. In this talk, we will focus on the discussion of AVS1-P7 features and its application.

In this paper, we develop face and hand tracking for sign language recognition system. The system is divided into two stages: the initial and tracking stages. In initial stage, we use the skin feature to localize face and hands of signer. The ellipse model on CbCr space is constructed and used to detect skin color. After the skin regions have been segmented, face and hand blobs are defined by using size and facial feature with the assumption that the movement of face is less than that of hands in this signing scenario. In tracking stage, the motion estimation is applied only hand blobs, in which first and second derivative are used to compute the position of prediction of hands. We observed that there are errors in the value of tracking position between two consecutive frames in which velocity has changed abruptly. To improve the tracking performance, our proposed algorithm compensates the error of tracking position by using adaptive search area to re-compute the hand blobs. Simulation results indicate our proposed algorithm can track face and hand with greater precision with negligible computational complexity increase.

In the real world there are thousands of time series data that coexists with other data. Every day tons of data is collected in the form of time series. Time series is a collection of observations that is recorded or measured over time on a regular or irregular basis generally sequentially. Time series arise in financial, economic, and scientific applications. Typical examples are the recording of different values of stock prices, bank transactions, consumer price index, electricity and telecommunication data, etc. In theory, such data is processed, analyzed, disseminated, and presented. However, many institutions are facing some difficult issues in organizing such a vast amount of data. Therefore, the need for data management tools has become more and more important. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a framework for Time Series Data Management (TSDM). The central abstraction for the proposed domain specific framework is the notion of Business Sections, Group of Time Series, and Time Series itself. The framework integrates minimum specification regarding structural and functional aspects for time series data management.

Density-based clustering algorithms have recently gained popularity in the data mining field due to their ability to discover arbitrary shaped clusters while preserving spatial proximity of data points. In this work we adapt a density-based clustering algorithm, DBSCAN, to a new problem domain: identification of homogenous color regions in biomedical images. Examples of specific problems of this nature include landscape segmentation of satellite imagery, object detection and, in our case, identification of significant color regions in images of skin lesions (tumors). Automated outer and inner boundary segmentation is a key step in segmentation of structures such as skin lesions, tumors of breast, bone, and brain. This step is important because the accuracy of the subsequent steps (extraction of various features, post-processing) crucially depends on the accuracy of this very first step. In this paper, we present an unsupervised approach to segmentation of pigmented skin lesion images based on DBSCAN clustering algorithm. The color regions identified by the algorithm are compared to those identified by the human subjects and the Kappa coefficient, a statistical indicator of computer-human agreement, is found to be significant.
