Even though passwords are the most convenient means of authentication, they bring along themselves the threat of dictionary attacks. Dictionary attacks may be of two kinds: online and offline. While offline dictionary attacks are possible only if the adversary is able to collect data for a successful protocol execution by eavesdropping on the communication channel and can be successfully countered using public key cryptography, online dictionary attacks can be performed by anyone and there is no satisfactory solution to counter them. This paper presents a new authentication protocol which is called CompChall (computational challenge). The proposed protocol uses only one way hash functions as the building blocks and attempts to eliminate online dictionary attacks by implementing a challenge-response system. This challenge-response system is designed in a fashion that it does not pose any difficulty to a genuine user but is time consuming and computationally intensive for an adversary trying to launch a large number of login requests per unit time as in the case of an online dictionary attack. The protocol is stateless and thus less vulnerable to DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.

Software coding practices, in the interest of efficiency, often ignore to enforce strict bound checking on buffers, arrays and pointers. This results in software code that is more vulnerable to security intrusions exploiting buffer overflow vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, such attacks form the most common type of security threats to the computer and information systems, making it imperative to find efficient solutions for the buffer overflow vulnerabilities. Typically, an attacker is able to affect a successful intrusion by causing buffer overflow in the stack frame of a function call, thereby causing the valid return address to get overwritten by a malicious value. This allows the attacker to redirect the return from a function call to a malicious piece of code introduced by the attacker. Depending on the nature of the malicious code, the attacker is able to compromise availability, integrity, or confidentiality of a system. Researchers have suggested transforming the return address or even using an entirely separate stack for managing the return addresses. This paper describes a simple technique that ensures the integrity of the return address by pushing on the stack two copies of the return address, a transformed (or encrypted) return address value along with the original one. Before popping the return address, two return address values are compared to detect any malicious activity, thus preventing the exploitation of the stack based buffer overflow vulnerabilities. The proposed modification may be implemented at the CPU architecture level or by simple modification to the compiler's prologue and epilogue code.

Mobile ad hoc networks will often be deployed in environments where the nodes of the networks are unattended and have little or no physical protection against tampering. The nodes of mobile ad hoc networks are thus susceptible to compromise. The networks are particularly vulnerable to denial of service (DOS) attacks launched through compromised nodes or intruders. In this paper, we present a new DOS attack and its defense in ad hoc networks. The new DOS attack, called ad hoc flooding attack, can result in denial of service when used against on-demand routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks, such as AODV, DSR. The intruder broadcasts mass Route Request packets or sends a lot of attacking DATA packets to exhaust the communication bandwidth and node resource so that the valid communication can not be kept. After analyzed ad hoc flooding attack, we develop flooding attack prevention (FAP), a generic defense against the ad hoc flooding attack in mobile ad hoc networks. The FAP is composed of neighbor suppression and path cutoff. When the intruder broadcasts exceeding packets of route request, the immediate neighbors of the intruder observe a high rate of route request and then they lower the corresponding priority according to the rate of incoming queries. Moreover, not serviced low priority queries are eventually discarded. When the intruder sends many attacking DATA packets to the victim node, the node may cut off the path and does not set up a path with the intruder any more. Mobile ad hoc networks can prevent the ad hoc flooding attack by FAP with little overhead.

Several problems are required to be fixed in order to apply geographical routing protocol greedy perimeter stateless routing (GPSR) in wireless sensor networks. First, GPSR is designed under the assumption of symmetric links (i.e., bidirectional reachability), which is not realistic for many practical sensor networks, since wireless links in sensor networks often are asymmetric. Second, in sensor networks, packet destinations are often marked with locations instead of identifiers like IP address. Therefore, packets are routed to the home node, which is the node geographically closest to the destined location. Under GPSR, when the target location is outside the exterior perimeter of the sensor network, each packet has to visit all nodes on the boundary of the sensor network topology before it identifies the home node, which results in energy inefficiency. Third, due to the dynamic nature of sensor networks, maintaining data consistency, that is, data retrieved from the home node for a location should be consistent with the data sent to the same location, becomes a challenge when home nodes change. We propose on-demand GPSR (OD-GPSR), a data driven geographical routing protocol customized for sensor networks with solutions to the above three problems. Simulation results show that OD-GPSR performs well in terms of energy efficiency and packet delivery rate at the cost of a little bit more packet delivery delay.

This paper proposes an innovative solution to design the search interfaces of search engines with soft real-time guarantee. Our solution presents a new scheduling model to enable flexible relative deadline and a time prediction algorithm to overcome the uncertainty of varied execution time. The time prediction algorithm is also proved to be optimal if the elements of sampling vectors are independent. The results of the experiment show that this new model can fully utilize the processor with a very low ratio of task abortion.

Development of information systems and IT are continuously ongoing in almost every company and organisation. The aim of this paper is to describe and analyse the different types of the professional work in these organisations. Some implications in designing IT in different types of professional work are addressed.
