Advances in wireless network technology and the increasing use of number of handheld mobile devices make many services and applications necessary to be offered to mobile users. An event notification service (ENS) system is an extremely useful communication service for those applications. Therefore, it becomes necessary to extend ENS system to a mobile environment. A distributed ENS system is an asynchronous system consisting of several subsystems, namely, producer clients, consumer clients and servers without common memory and global clock. The subsystems communicate each other by sending messages with unpredictable transmission delays causing unordered propagation of messages. In this paper we describe a model of ENS system for mobile environment. Then we present a causal ordering algorithm of ENS systems for mobile environment.

The explosive growth of XML has led to an increasing need for scalable XML retrieval systems. Our XML retrieval system, the SQLGenerator, stores XML of any schema in a fixed schema relational database and supports a full-featured semistructured query language, XML-QL, through optimized translation of its semantics to relational SQL queries. This paper examines the scalability of this approach with respect to increasing data size. We index four XML collections ranging in size from 500MB to 2GB that were generated using a standard XML generator XBench. We then compare the execution times of 11 standard XBench queries, covering a wide range of semistructured query features, whose semantics were directly translatable from their original XQuery language to XML-QL. Although it is difficult to estimate the theoretical baseline for scalability of these query features in an RDBMS, many of the queries' runtimes grow linearly with respect to the size of the document collection.

This study explores using keywords to automatically generate hyperlinks for large sets of reference materials. A content analysis was performed and the results indicate that keywords seem to be closely associated with manually generated hyperlinks. Two prototypes were developed, differing in whether the keywords were manually generated by the author, or mechanically extracted by an automatic process. In both prototypes, different types of infra-document and inter-document links were generated. A preliminary evaluation on the first prototype (which was based on manually identified keywords) shows that this prototype system holds promise for further exploration. In the second prototype, keywords were automatically extracted with Oracle Text gist/theme generation tools. Although the automatically extracted keywords were different from those identified by authors, there was a significant overlap between the set of links generated by each prototype. The next step will be testing the usefulness of this automatic approach with a thorough user evaluation.

In this paper, a pen-type input device is proposed to track trajectories in 3-D space by using accelerometers and gyroscopes. Inertial navigation system (INS) theory, as an autonomous positioning technology widely adopted, is employed to track the users ' handwriting motion without external reference sensors or signals. The INS-based positioning system, however, suffers from unbounded error, which grows with time due to the integration process involved. In order to solve this problem, the system error model is built to analyze the influence of error sources. Then efficient error compensation algorithm based on Zero Velocity Compensation (ZVC) is developed to reduce the effect of identified errors. The experiments show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

In order to enhance the functions of IMCPs (the Product of Interactive Multimedia Creator)over Internet through streaming multimedia technology., in the paper some methods are proposed to combine IMCPs with MPEG4 technology by which IMCPs could be translated to streaming multimedia and transferred over Internet, these methods include converting the file format of IMCPs'into MP4 format, Revealing Chinese characters, improving QoS, extending MPEG4s support streamType and so on. These technologies have been realized by presenting a process of both converting the products of Founder Author Tool into a kind of MPEG4 file format and building a corresponding streaming media player which further enhances the content of Founder Author Tool's products by streaming multimedia technology. On the other hand, IMC(Interactive Multimedia Creator) software can painlessly produce MPEG4 contents without learning any new content development tools, and benefit from the international standard and its interoperability.

In mobile computing environments, there is an implicit assumption that the server is able to broadcast consistent data to mobile clients. This assumption may not be valid. In this paper, we formulate broadcasting data at the server as a broadcast transaction which reads the entire database in a consistent way before broadcasting data in a broadcast cycle. This issue is not trivial as the broadcast transaction will create high interference to normal update transactions at the server. Some algorithms proposed by previous studies on reading the entire databases could be candidates to solving the problem. However, we found that those algorithms are inadequate in handling update transactions correctly. Hence we devise a new algorithm, called the Read-White Set Test to resolve such problems and minimizes the interference to normal update transactions during reading process of the entire database for data broadcasting.

With the explosive increase in web based information, the need for an intelligent agent for automatic classification has also been increased resulting in many research discoveries in this area. Machine Learning (ML) based document classification is now the prevalent approach. However, classification by ML may not keep the same performance because the knowledge generated from the training set may not be appropriate for certain types of web information. People are often concerned more about the newly uploaded information such as web based online news than information already available. This explains why it is not widely used in real applications. However, the manual classification method, by the domain users, cannot be a solution either until the knowledge acquisition bottleneck issue is resolved. Multiple Classification Ripple Down Rules, an incremental knowledge acquisition method, is suggested to overcome this problem with fast learning and low cost maintenance.

The goal of steganography is to avoid drawing suspicion to the transmission of a hidden message in multi-medium. This creates a potential problem when this technology is misused for planning criminal activities. In this paper, a new steganalysis technique is proposed on the basis of histogram analysis on the wavelet coefficients for the detection the very existence of wavelet domain information hiding techniques. And our approach lays particular stress on methods in which secret message was embedded via quantizating wavelet coefficients. Different statistical discrepancies are obtained by histogram analysis of sub-band wavelet coefficients from stego-images and innocent images. And FFT of these discrepancies are used to form a quantitative criterion to determine whether an image has been embedded secret message or not. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is comparable to previously existing techniques.

We investigate hypertext repositories with automatically generated hyperlinks among paragraphs. The algorithms that generate the links yield results with significant common characteristics despite large differences among the algorithms. Furthermore, different repositories, generated by the same algorithms show significant common characteristics, although generated from the return lists of different search engines. Finally, repositories generated for different domains also have common characteristics. This suggests that these characteristics are pervasive properties of judiciously retrieved document sets. The common characteristics revolve around a tendency for some documents (the kernel) to be destinations of a disproportionately high fraction of the hyperlinks in the repository. An emergent property of such repositories with practical significance is that browsing activities will have a tendency to trap the user within the kernel, perhaps without their realizing it. To enable users to choose to avoid trapping, we propose a ring structure for hypertext repositories which is exposed to the user by annotations to the hyperlinks.

The word positions for any given word in the whole collection are arranged in clusters. If we can use the method that can take advantage of clustering, excellent results can be achieved in compression of inverted file. However, the mechanisms of decoding in all the well-known compression methods that can exploit clustering are more complex, which reduce the ability of searching performance in information retrieval system (IRS) at some degree. In this paper, we proposed a new method that can facilitate coding and decoding of interpolative code by using the simply applied and high-speed models such as γ code and Golomb code in d-gap technique. This new method can exploit clustering well, and the experimental results confirm that our method can provide fast decoding speed and excellent compression efficiency.
